Long-term outcomes of inferior rectus recession with conjunctival recession in congenital monocular elevation deficiency: a case series.

Introduction: Monocular elevation deficiency (MED) can be congenital and acquired. The underlying etiology usually guides the surgical management of MED. In cases with tight inferior rectus (IR) on forced ductus test, IR recession is preferred, and in cases with Superior rectus palsy, vertical transposition of horizontal recti (Knapp's Procedure) is the treatment of choice. The purpose of this case series is to report the long-term outcomes of inferior rectus recession with conjunctival recession in treating congenital monocular elevation deficiency (MED). Methods: It included 10 patients of c

Small tuck for superior oblique palsy.

PURPOSE: To investigate the surgical outcomes of small superior oblique (SO) tuck-denoting minimal tendon laxity-in patients with unilateral SO palsy. METHODS: The medical records of consecutive patients treated with ≤6 mm SO tuck from 2000 to 2018 at Kellogg Eye Center, University of Michigan, were reviewed retrospectively. Tendon tucks were performed to a fairly uniform tension in an amount that just eliminated slack in the tendon. Pre- and postoperative motility measurements were compared. Patients were excluded if they had a history of prior strabismus surgery or concurrent vertical rectu

Combined recession and resection of the same lateral Rectus in the treatment of exotropia.

BACKGROUND: Besides rest position abnormalities, exotropia could also be due to hypertonia of the Lateral Recti (LR) given divergence frequently decreases under general anesthesia (GA). Combined Recession-Resection of the Same Muscle (RRSM) is a promising alternative to the Faden procedure in the surgical treatment of overacting MR in esotropia. We thus examined here the effectiveness of combined RRSM of the LR for the treatment of exotropia that decrease under GA. METHODS: We performed a retrospective, single-center evaluation over a 16-month period of 100 patients operated on for exotropia

Functional burden of strabismus: decreased binocular summation and binocular inhibition.

IMPORTANCE: Binocular summation (BiS) is defined as the superiority of visual function for binocular over monocular viewing. Binocular summation decreases with age and large interocular differences in visual acuity. To our knowledge, BiS has not heretofore been well studied as a functional measure of binocularity in strabismus. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of strabismus on BiS using a battery of psychophysical tasks that are clinically relevant and easy to use and to determine whether strabismus is associated with binocular inhibition in extreme cases. DESIGN: Case-control study. SETTI

Perceptual fading without retinal adaptation.

A retinally stabilized object readily undergoes perceptual fading and disappears from consciousness. This startling phenomenon is commonly believed to arise from local bottom-up sensory adaptation to edge information that occurs early in the visual pathway, such as in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus or retinal ganglion cells. Here we use random dot stereograms to generate perceivable contours or shapes that are not present on the retina and ask whether perceptual fading occurs for such "cortical" contours. Our results show that perceptual fading occurs for "cortical" contours an

Isolated y-splitting and recession of the lateral rectus muscle in patients with exo-duane syndrome.

PURPOSE: Weakening of both horizontal rectus muscles is performed for patients with Duane syndrome and significant misinnervation of the lateral rectus (LR) muscle resulting in strabismus, limitation to ocular rotations, and globe retraction. In patients with severe up-/downshoots, a Y-splitting of the LR is often recommended. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of isolated unilateral LR recession-Y splitting in exo-Duane patients with limitation to adduction and up-/downshoots. METHODS: etrospective review of the records of consecutive patients with exo-Duane syndrome and
