The impacts of bacterial co-infections and secondary bacterial infections on patients with severe influenza pneumonitis admitted to the intensive care units.

PURPOSES: This study investigated the prevalence and clinical outcomes of pulmonary bacterial co-infections and secondary bacterial infectio … Liver cirrhosis and diabetes mellitus were the independent risk factors for bacterial co-infection. Acinetobacter baumannii (30.7%) and S. aureus (23.1%) were the most often identified bacteria in patients with secondary bacterial pneumonia. Patients with secondary bacterial infections had a longer duration of mechanical ventilation, and longer ICU and hospital stay. CO …

Genome-wide identification of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacterial (CR-GNB) isolates retrieved from hospitalized patients in Bihar, India.

Carbapenemase-producing clinical isolates are becoming more common over the world, posing a severe public health danger, particularly in developing nations like India. Carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacterial (CR-GNB) infection has become a fast-expanding global threat with limited antibiotic choice and significant mortality. This study aimed to highlight the carbapenem-resistance among clinical isolates of hospital admitted patients in Bihar, India. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 101 clinical isolates of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pse…

Microbiology and antimicrobial sensitivity of ventriculo-peritoneal shunt infections in a referral paediatric neurosurgery ward during a period of 7 years.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the aetiology and antibiotic susceptibility pattern in children with ventriculo-peritoneal (VP) shunt infections. METHODS: A retrospective investigation was conducted from March 2011 to March 2018 among 163 children, who were admitted because of VP shunt infections in a referral educational hospital in Isfahan, Iran. RESULTS: Coagulase negative staphylococcus (CoNS) was the most common organism (49.0%), followed by Acinetobacter baumannii (10.4%) and Staphylococcus aureus (8.9%). Susceptibility of Gram-positive organisms to a different class of antibio…

Bacterial community analysis of infant foods obtained from Chinese markets by combining culture-dependent and high-throughput sequence methods.

In this study, twenty-two baby foods including cereal-based products and powdered infant formula (PIF) obtained from local markets were comp … m. Foodborne pathogens including Bacillus cereus, and potentially pathogenic microorganisms such as Acinetobacter baumannii, were identified in infant foods by HTS. The current results could expand the crucial information about bacterial contamination of baby foods.

The Antibacterial Activity of Human Amniotic Membrane against Multidrug-Resistant Bacteria Associated with Urinary Tract Infections: New Insights from Normal and Cancerous Urothelial Models.

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) represent a serious global health issue, especially due to emerging multidrug-resistant UTI-causing bacteria. Recently, we showed that the human amniotic membrane (hAM) could be a candidate for treatments and prevention of UPEC and Staphylococcus aureus infections. However, its role against multidrug-resistant bacteria, namely methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA), extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, vancomycin-resistant Enterococci (VRE), carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii, and Pseudomonas ae…

Detection of New Delhi Metallo-β-lactamase 1 and Cephalosporin Resistance Genes Among Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae in Water Bodies Adjacent to Hospitals in India.

The prevalence of carbapenem resistance among bacterial isolates from selected water bodies receiving hospital effluents and adjoining aquaculture farms in Kerala, India, was studied. Klebsiella pneumoniae followed by Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca, Enterobacter aerogenes and Acinetobacter baumannii were the predominant isolates. Antibiotic sensitivity of these isolates was determined by Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method. Nearly 60% of the Enterobacteriaceae isolates screened were multidrug resistant of which 16.6% were carbapenem resistant. The carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae we…

Quercetin inhibits carbapenemase and efflux pump activities among carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria.

Rapid dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Gram-negative bacteria (CRGNB) is a global threat. Quercetin is known for its antimicrobial activity. In this study, carbapenemase and efflux pump inhibitory activities of quercetin were demonstrated against carbapenem-resistant Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii. Further, molecular docking was performed to elucidate molecular mechanisms of such inhibition. CRGNB, expressing one of the carbapenemases, demonstrated significant inhibition of carbapenemase activity when pre-incubated with 64 µg/ml…

Synthesis and Study of New Quinolineaminoethanols as Anti-Bacterial Drugs.

The lack of antibiotics with a novel mode of action associated with the spread of drug resistant bacteria make the fight against infectious diseases particularly challenging. A quinoline core is found in several anti-infectious drugs, such as mefloquine and bedaquiline. Two main objectives were set in this work. Firstly, we evaluated the anti-mycobacterial properties of the previous quinolines 3, which have been identified as good candidates against ESKAPEE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter spp. an…
