Therapeutics for Inflammatory-Related Diseases Based on Plasmon-Activated Water: A Review.

It is recognized that the properties of liquid water can be markedly different from those of bulk one when it is in contact with hydrophobic surfaces or is confined in nano-environments. Because our knowledge regarding water structure on the molecular level of dynamic equilibrium within a picosecond time scale is far from completeness all of water's conventionally known properties are based on inert "bulk liquid water" with a tetrahedral hydrogen-bonded structure. Actually, the strength of water's hydrogen bonds (HBs) decides its properties and activities. In this review, an innovative idea on

Differential clinical profile of candesartan compared to other angiotensin receptor blockers.

The advantages of blood pressure (BP) control on the risks of heart failure and stroke are well established. The renin-angiotensin system plays an important role in volume homeostasis and BP regulation and is a target for several groups of antihypertensive drugs. Angiotensin II receptor blockers represent a major class of antihypertensive compounds. Candesartan cilexetil is an angiotensin II type 1 (AT[1]) receptor antagonist (angiotensin receptor blocker [ARB]) that inhibits the actions of angiotensin II on the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system. Oral candesartan 8-32 mg once daily is recom

In vivo skin irritation potential of a Castanea sativa (Chestnut) leaf extract, a putative natural antioxidant for topical application.

Topical application of natural antioxidants has proven to be effective in protecting the skin against ultraviolet-mediated oxidative damage and provides a straightforward way to strengthen the endogenous protection system. However, natural products can provoke skin adverse effects, such as allergic and irritant contact dermatitis. Skin irritation potential of Castanea sativa leaf ethanol:water (7:3) extract was investigated by performing an in vivo patch test in 20 volunteers. Before performing the irritation test, the selection of the solvent and extraction method was guided by the 1,1-diphen

Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and antioxidant activities of Carlina acanthifolia root essential oil.

The root of Carlina acanthifolia All. (Asteraceae) has been traditionally used in the treatment of various disorders including stomach and skin diseases. We studied antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer and antioxidant activities of Carlina acanthifolia root essential oil, in order to validate some of the ethnopharmacological claims. Antimicrobial activity was tested on 15 bacteria and three strains of fungi using the agar diffusion and broth microdilution methods. In assessing anti-inflammatory activity the carrageenan-induced rat paw oedema test was used, while ethanol-induced stress

Long-term blockade of angiotensin AT1 receptors increases survival of obese Zucker rats.

Despite the well-documented effect of irbesartan, an angiotensin AT1 receptor antagonist, on diabetic nephropathy, its effect on mortality related to multiple metabolic risk factors is unknown. To address this question, obese fa/fa Zucker rats were submitted to a 13-month treatment by irbesartan (30 mg/kg/day p.o.). Vehicle-treated obese fa/fa Zucker rats exhibited an important mortality (72%), which was markedly reduced by irbesartan (22%, P<0.05). Mortality in control lean fa/+ rats attained 12%. Irbesartan diminished the elevation in urinary protein excretion, plasma creatinine and urea nit

Do recent data from the Seychelles Islands alter the conclusions of the NRC Report on the toxicological effects of methylmercury?

In 2000, the National Research Council (NRC), an arm of the National Academy of Sciences, released a report entitled, "Toxicological Effects of Methylmercury." The overall conclusion of that report was that, at levels of exposure in some fish- and marine mammal-consuming communities (including those in the Faroe Islands and New Zealand), subtle but significant adverse effects on neuropsychological development were occurring as a result of in utero exposure. Since the release of that report, there has been continuing discussion of the public health relevance of current levels of exposure to Met

Use of irbesartan to maintain sinus rhythm in patients with long-lasting persistent atrial fibrillation: a prospective and randomized study.

BACKGROUND: Data from studies of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors provide evidence that the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system plays a role as a mediator of atrial remodeling in atrial fibrillation. The present study has evaluated the effect of treatment with the angiotensin I type 1 receptor blocker irbesartan on maintaining sinus rhythm after conversion from persistent atrial fibrillation. METHODS AND RESULTS: To be included in the present study, patients must have had an episode of persistent atrial fibrillation for >7 days. The patients were then randomized and scheduled for ele

Ethanol affects hypothalamic neurons projecting to the hippocampus and inhibits dentate granule cell LTP.

In previous studies we demonstrated that ethanol inhibition of hippocampal granule cell long-term potentiation (LTP) is mediated by angiotensin II (AII), and the inhibition can be blocked by losartan, a specific AII receptor antagonist. The purpose of the present study was to demonstrate that this low-dose ethanol inhibition of dentate granule cell LTP induction is mediated by lateral hypothalamic (LH) afferents that project to the granule cells. In urethane anesthetized rats, we compared the effects of ethanol infusion, 6.0 microliter/30 min, by means of an open-ended push-pull type cannula,

Enzalutamide Enhanced Honokiol-induced Apoptotic Insults to Drug-resistant Glioblastoma Cells via an Intrinsic Bak-mitochondrion-caspase Cascade Mechanism.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Most glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) patients experience tumor recurrence due to their resistance to therapy, especially temozolomide (TMZ). Our previous studies showed the potential of honokiol, a small biphenolic molecule, for treatment of GBM. Recently, the roles of androgen receptor (AR) in GBM malignance were further identified. This study was aimed to further evaluate the effects of enzalutamide, an inhibitor of AR, on honokiol-induced killing to drug-resistant glioblastoma cells and the possible mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TMZ-resistant human and mouse glioblastoma

The BCL-2 selective inhibitor ABT-199 sensitizes soft tissue sarcomas to proteasome inhibition by a concerted mechanism requiring BAX and NOXA.

Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies predominantly affecting children and young adults. Despite improvements in multimodal therapies, 5-year survival rates are only 50% and new treatment options in STS are urgently needed. To develop a rational combination therapy for the treatment of STS we focused on ABT-199 (Venetoclax), a BCL-2 specific BH3-mimetic, in combination with the proteasome inhibitor bortezomib (BZB). Simultaneous inhibition of BCL-2 and the proteasome resulted in strongly synergistic apoptosis induction. Mechanistically, ABT-199 mainly affected th
