Orbital aspects following monobloc advancement in syndromic craniosynostosis.

The monobloc advancement with distraction is a treatment modality for syndromic craniosynostosis, to correct exorbitism, upper airway compromise and malocclusion. In this report orbital volume and movements of (peri-)orbital structures and globes of seven patients following monobloc distraction are evaluated. In preoperative and postoperative CT-scans orbital volume was assessed and a 3D coordinate system with eleven landmarks was used to measure the movements of orbital structures and globes and to measure the change of exorbitism. Correlation between orbital volume, movements of the orbital

Blood loss and transfusion rates during repair of craniofacial deformities.

Surgical procedures for correction of craniofacial deformities resulted in unavoidable and extensive blood loss in small children and infants. Almost all of the patients undergoing these procedures will undergo a blood transfusion either during or immediately after the operation. A retrospective review of 30 patients who underwent craniofacial surgery was performed in this study to determine the magnitude of transfusion required for craniofacial surgery, document transfusion morbidity, and identify variables associated with the transfusion. The mean estimated blood loss was 566.8 mL, the mean

Surgical Management of an Intracranial Injury Caused by a Handcrafted Arrow in Sub-Saharan Africa: A Global Neurosurgical Relevance.

This case report and literature review describe an intracranial injury resulting from a handcrafted arrow that required emergent surgical ma … to the frontal sinus by a handcrafted Maasai Mara arrow. Due to the barbed nature of the arrow, the frontal bone was drilled to allow for the removal of the arrow. The dura was repaired, and the wound was irrigated without intraoperative or postoperative bleeding complications. The arrow was inoculated with animal feces. Pediatric Midface Fractures: Outcomes and Complications of 218 Patients.

OBJECTIVE: To analyze management, outcomes, and complications of pediatric midface fractures. METHODS: Retrospective cohort study at an urban, single-institution, multispecialty surgical teams, at two level 1 pediatric trauma centers. Query included subjects aged 0-17 diagnosed with midface fractures between 2012 and 2016. RESULTS: A total of 218 pediatric patients presented with 410 total midface fractures. The most common etiologies included motor vehicle collisions (MVC) (n = 56, 25.7%), sport-related (n = 35, 16.1%), and assault/battery (n = 32, 14.7%). Fracture site distribution include

Frontal Changes in the Lower Face After Clockwise Rotation of the Maxillomandibular Complex Without Perisurgical Orthodontic Treatment in Angle Class I and Skeletal Class III Women.

BACKGROUND: Orthognathic surgery has become more popular to slenderize a wide lower face and to improve facial esthetics in Asian patients with normal occlusion. Clockwise rotation (CR) of the maxillomandibular complex (MMC) steepens the mandibular plane. This study performed a quantitative analysis on the influence of CR on slenderness of the lower face from the frontal view. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 36 female patients with Angle Class I occlusion and skeletal Class III pattern. The subjects underwent CR of the MMC without perioperative orthodontic treatment an

[Semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome: a variety of complaints and treatment difficulties].

The syndrome of the third mobile window of the semicircular canals (or Minor's syndrome) is a degeneration of the bone wall of the upper semicircular canal, first described by L. Minor in 1998. This is a rare lesion of the inner ear, which is characterized by hearing impairment and vestibular manifestations. The presence of bone wall degeneration of the semicircular canal in 50% of patients can be detected during a standard CT scan of the temporal bone (in 1 mm increments) in the frontal (coronary) projection or in the oblique coronary projection in the PC plane. Minor syndrome occurs in only

OBJECTIVES: This prospective study was performed with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images for evaluating canalis sinuosus (CS), determine its location and diameter in relation to gender, age, and distances from important structures, including floor of nasal cavity, incisive foramen, edge of buccal cortical bone, and palatal cortical bone. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The scans of 650 patients in total were included in this prospective analysis. Gender, age, the position of the CS, its presence or absence, diameter, and its location in reference to the adjacent teeth were the factors that wer

Effect of skull flexural properties on brain response during dynamic head loading - biomed 2013.

The skull-brain complex is typically modeled as an integrated structure, similar to a fluid-filled shell. Under dynamic loads, the interacti … skull table bending stiffness increased by a factor of 2.4. Blunt impact loads were applied to the frontal bone centrally, using LS-Dyna. The intracranial pressure predictions and the strain predictions in the skull were compared for models with and without surface shell elements, showing that the pressures in the mid-anterior and mid-posterior of the brain w …

Computed tomography in maxillofacial trauma.

Computed tomography (CT) has become the key diagnostic modality in the evaluation of head trauma. Experience with CT in the operative assessment of maxillofacial injuries is limited, however. Plain films and multidirectional tomography have been used until now to define fractures in the facial region. We examined 27 patients sustaining maxillofacial trauma with CT scans. Ten patients were studied in the coronal plane, 12 in the axial plane, and the remaining 5 in both the axial and coronal planes. Polycycloidal tomography in the coronal and/or sagittal plane was obtained in 18 patients for com

This study included 235 patients with missile injuries of the facial skeleton, who were treated in the Maxillofacial Unit of the Hospital of Specialized Surgery in Medical City, Baghdad, Iraq, during a period of 4 years of war, since Iraq became the international battlefield for terrorism. There were 195 men and 40 women, with ages ranging from 1 to 70 years (mean, 39.5 years); all patients had severe facial injuries and posttraumatic missile deformities, including 27 patients with orbital injuries. This study also evaluates the management of the immediate, intermediate, and secondary phases.D
