Diagnosis and surgical management of a rare case of duodenal duplication cyst in a neonate: Case report and literature review.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Duodenal duplication cysts are a rare subtype of alimentary tract duplications cysts, consisting of 7 % of all the duplications. The clinical presentation is variable, depending on the size, location and mass effect. Most duodenal duplication cysts abut the second or third portion of the native duodenum. The standard treatment of choice for symptomatic enteric duplication cysts is complete surgical removal. In our case, by examining the abdomen, ectopic pancreatic tissue was found on the wall of the transverse colon, along with Meckel's diverticulum, 50 cm from the

Ingested foreign bodies in children: Do they really pass spontaneously from the gastrointestinal tract? A single-centre experience with 1000 cases.

BACKGROUND: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is frequently encountered in all departments that treat children. FB may bring about significant anxiety for parents and physicians. The present study aims to determine the appropriate approach for FB ingestion in children. METHODS: The records of 1000 children with a history of FB ingestion between the years 2005 and 2017 were reviewed retrospectively in this study. RESULTS: Of 1000 children, 53.8% were male. The most common types of FBs were coins (35%). X-ray was negative in 49% of the patients, and 86% of these patients received no intervention. Of

Serous Cystadenocarcinoma Arising in Presumed Vitelline Duct Remnant: A Case Report and Implications in the Management of Cancer of Unknown Primary.

Background. Malignant neoplasms arising in Meckel's diverticulum, a vitelline duct remnant, are rare yet well-documented. Case Presentation. A 53-year-old previously healthy female presented with an enlarging midline abdominal wall mass. A computed tomography scan revealed a mass involving the linea alba, bilateral rectus abdominis, and subcutaneous fat. Extensive clinical workup failed to demonstrate other lesions, except local and paratracheal/hilar lymphadenopathy. Histopathologic examination of the resected tumor demonstrated a spectrum of serous neoplasia including serous cystadenoma, pap

Ileal iterative spontaneous perforation from foreign body granuloma: problems of histopathologic diagnosis.

Spontaneous ileal perforation is a very rare cause of peritonitis. It occurs, in most of the cases, as a complication of Crohn's disease or intestinal tuberculosis. We present the case of a 23-year-old female patient with multiple surgical interventions during the last year, for iterative ileal spontaneous perforation with generalized peritonitis of which cause was initially assigned to intestinal tuberculosis. Actual episode of generalized peritonitis was determined once again by an ileal perforation of 5 mm at 70 cm from the ileo-cecal valve situated on a suture scar. Distally, a bowel stric

Impact of omphalocele size on associated conditions.

PURPOSE: Omphalocele is often associated with the presence of other congenital anomalies. Case reports have demonstrated nonclassical associations occurring in smaller omphaloceles. The aim of this study was to determine if omphalocele defect size correlates with the type of anomalies found. METHODS: Patient records at a pediatric hospital were retrospectively reviewed for an 8-year period. Data were collected on patient demographics, omphalocele size, and congenital anomalies identified. Size of the abdominal wall defect was determined by either physical examination or operative record of re

Split notochord syndrome: ileal duplication causing intermittent episodes of vomiting.

Split notochord syndrome is a group of developmental abnormalities caused by abnormal splitting or deviation of the notochord, clinically resulting in the duplicated bowel associated with vertebral anomalies. In this syndrome, initial presentations due to duplicated bowel, vomiting, abdominal pain, and failure to thrive, usually occur before 1 year of age. We here report a 12-year-old boy with intermittent vomiting, previously diagnosed with cyclic vomiting syndrome. On abdominal x-ray examination, a defect in the closure of posterior vertebral arches was observed in the 5th lumbar vertebral b

Jejunoileal causes of overt gastrointestinal bleeding: diagnosis, management, and outcome.

Major bleeding from the small intestine is uncommon and difficult to localize. We examined its etiologies and assessed available diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. The records of all adults undergoing operation for small intestinal hemorrhage over a 10-year period (1/89-12/98) were reviewed. There were eight men and four women with a mean age of 54 years. Six patients presented with arteriovenous malformations. Preoperative diagnosis was by endoscopy (three of six), scintigraphy (two of two), and/or angiography (two of six). Intraoperative panendoscopy was used for localization in 5 cases.

Tumor of the atrioventricular nodal region. A clinical and immunohistochemical study.

Autopsy specimens of 17 tumors of the atrioventricular nodal region were studied. Sudden death occurred in 14 children and adults; seven of these patients had a history of atrioventricular block or syncope. Three tumors were incidental findings in infants with other congenital anomalies; diaphragmatic agenesis, pulmonary hypoplasia, and Meckel's diverticulum in one patient; mitral atresia in one; and congenital hydrocephalus, ventricular septal defect, patent ductus arteriosus, coarctation of the aorta, and patent omphalovitelline duct in the third. Immunohistochemical stains demonstrated stro

Pancreatic Heterotopia in the Biliary Cyst Wall of a Pregnant Patient and Literature Review.

Pancreatic heterotopia is the presence of pancreatic tissue in a different anatomical location with no connection to the main pancreas. The most common locations in the gastrointestinal system are duodenum, stomach, and Meckel diverticulum. However, it is quite rare in the hepatobiliary system. Here we present a patient with pancreatic heterotopia who we treated with left hemihepatectomy and extrahepatic bile duct resection for Todani type 4a bile duct cyst. Heterotopic pancreatic tissue was present in dilated cystic bile ducts on pathological examination. A 22-year-old 26-week pregnant patien…
