Association between pregnancy intention and preconception health behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Female adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer survivors face higher infertility and pregnancy risks than peers with no cancer history. Preconception health behaviors such as physical activity (PA), tobacco smoking, and alcohol intake influence reproductive outcomes. In general populations, pregnancy intention is positively associated with healthy preconception behaviors, but it has not been studied among AYA survivors. The authors hypothesized that higher pregnancy intention would be associated with healthier behaviors, especially among AYA survivors with perceived infertility ris

Can Cochlear Implantation in Older Adults Reverse Cognitive Decline Due to Hearing Loss?

INTRODUCTION: Older adults with late-onset hearing loss are at risk for cognitive decline. Our study addresses the question of whether cochlear implantation (CI) can counteract this potential influence. We investigated whether cognitive performance in older adults with severe and profound hearing loss improves 12 months after CI to a level comparable to controls with normal hearing, matched for age, sex, and education level. DESIGN: This cohort study was performed at two tertiary referral centers. The study included 29 patients, of age between 60 and 80 years, with adult-onset, severe to prof

Overcoming barriers to engagement and adherence to a home-based physical activity intervention for patients with heart failure: a qualitative focus group study.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical guidelines recommend regular physical activity for patients with heart failure to improve functional capacity and symptoms and to reduce hospitalisation. Cardiac rehabilitation programmes have demonstrated success in this regard; however, uptake and adherence are suboptimal. Home-based physical activity programmes have gained popularity to address these issues, although it is acknowledged that their ability to provide personalised support will impact on their effectiveness. This study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to engagement and adherence to a home-based p

Factors influencing antiretroviral treatment suboptimal adherence among perinatally HIV-infected adolescents in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Existing studies have suggested decreased adherence and rebound in mortality in perinatally HIV-infected adolescents receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) as compared to adults and young children. METHODS: We used both quantitative and qualitative approaches to identify factors influencing adherence among perinatally infected adolescents in Thailand. We analyzed data from 568 pairs of perinatally infected adolescents (aged 12-19) and their primary caregivers in the Teens Living With Antiretrovirals (TEEWA) study, a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2010-2012. We also conducted

Patient and caregiver values, beliefs and experiences when considering home dialysis as a treatment option: a semi-structured interview study.

BACKGROUND: Home dialysis can offer improved quality of life and economic benefits compared with facility dialysis. Yet the uptake of home dialysis remains low around the world, which may be partly due to patients' lack of knowledge and barriers to shared and informed decision-making. We aimed to describe patient and caregiver values, beliefs and experiences when considering home dialysis, to inform strategies to align policy and practice with patients' needs. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with adult patients with chronic kidney disease Stage 4-5D (on dialysis <1 year) and their caregiv

Trends, habits and attitudes towards suntanning.

Epidemiological studies suggest a relationship between suntanning habits and high risk of malignant melanoma (MM). The incidence of MM is increased during the last 40 years. Sun exposure is highly prevalent in all age groups, especially among young and it is influenced by certain believes and attitudes towards suntanning and stimulated by peer pressure and aesthetic references. What is the cause of higher incidence of MM? Is it only trend and attitudes towards suntanning? A prototype of a young female of 21st century is attractive, slim, with bronze complexion, dresses in the bathing suit, whe

[Doppler echocardiographic investigation of left ventricular diastolic function in preterm infants with and without a patent ductus arteriosus].

We studied the influence of preload augmentation on Doppler-derived left ventricular diastolic function parameters in infants with a birth weight <1500 g. In 44 neonates with a closed duct and 29 neonates with an open ductus arteriosus a complete echocardiographic study including Doppler investigations of the mitral inflow signals and analysis of diastolic time intervals was performed. Neonates with an open duct had a lower median gestational age (27.1 vs. 29, P<0.01), a higher cardiac index (425 vs. 260 ml/min/kg, P<0.001), and a different M-mode left atrial to aortic diameter ratio (1.36 vs.

Developing a Culturally Tailored COVID-19 Educational Website for Latina and Black/African American Breast Cancer Survivors: Findings from a Community-Engaged Study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately affected Latino and Black/African American communities, exacerbating health disparities and disrupting cancer care. COVID-19 vaccine uptake was limited due to systemic mistrust, safety concerns, and misinformation. Breast cancer survivors undergoing treatment faced additional uncertainty regarding vaccination. This study describes the community-engaged process used to develop a culturally tailored, bilingual COVID-19 educational website for Black/African American and Latina breast cancer survivors. METHODS: Between January and March 2021,

The impact of service user death on staff working within addiction services.

INTRODUCTION: Research focusing on deaths due to addiction tends to explore the deceased themselves, their families, or those who have witnessed an overdose. However, limited research exploring the impact of bereavement on staff working in addiction services exists. This study explored how staff working within addiction services experience service user death. METHODS: An interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) approach was used in this study. Ten members of staff working in an Alcohol and Drug Recovery Service (ADRS) in Scotland who had experienced the death of a service user were recr

Quantitative evaluations of time-course and effectiveness of systemic treatments for atopic dermatitis: protocol for a pharmacodynamic model-based meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment responses to systemic therapies for atopic dermatitis (AD) may vary significantly based on medication types, treatment duration, concomitant topical corticosteroid use and specific patient subgroups. Evidence regarding the optimal medication selection and predictors of treatment response is warranted. A systematic approach to studying the effectiveness of systemic treatments from multiple perspectives may generate previously unreported evidence. We aim to quantitatively evaluate the time-course and effectiveness of various systemic treatments for AD, and to identify ass
