Inter-device reliability of DSI measurement.

The Dysphonia Severity Index (DSI) is a measure that quantifies the overall vocal quality. The aim of the study is to evaluate the reliability of DSI measurements. The DSIs of 30 subjects were therefore measured using LingWAVES (WEVOSYS) and DiVAS (XION). To evaluate the inter-device reliability of DSI measurement, the devices' results were compared for each subject. The DSI values of both devices showed great differences. The calculated DSI differences of 95% of the subjects were within the limits of +2.39 and -2.82, which makes a clinical interpretation of severity of voice disorder using di

The demands of professional opera singing on cranio-cervical posture.

Difficulty with singing is a rare but important complication following cervical spine surgery but there is little objective information regarding the cervical and head postural changes taking place during singing. The aim of this study was to identify postural changes in the cranio-cervical region associated with the demands of voice production in professional opera singing. The two Roentgen-cephalograms, one of which are taken whilst performing a specified singing task were taken from 18 professional opera students, 12 females (mean age 20.86 +/- 3.07 years) and six males (18.66 +/- 1.36 year

Deep-Learning-Based Representation of Vocal Fold Dynamics in Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia during Connected Speech in High-Speed Videoendoscopy.

OBJECTIVE: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (AdSD) is a neurogenic dystonia, which causes spasms of the laryngeal muscles. This disorder mainly affects production of connected speech. To understand how AdSD affects vocal fold (VF) movements and hence, the speech signal, it is necessary to study VF kinematics during the running speech. This paper introduces an automated method for analysis of VF vibrations in AdSD using laryngeal high-speed videoendoscopy (HSV) in running speech. METHODS: A monochrome HSV system was used to obtain video recordings from vocally normal individuals and AdSD patients

Treatment for Vocal Polyps: Lips and Tongue Trill.

Vocal polyps do not have a well-defined therapeutic indication. The recommended treatment is often laryngeal microsurgery, followed by postoperative speech therapy. Speech therapy as the initial treatment for polyps is a new concept and aims to modify inappropriate vocal behavior, adjust the voice quality, and encourage regression of the lesion. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the sonorous lips and tongue trill technique in the treatment of vocal polyps. The sample consisted of 10 adults diagnosed with a polyp who were divided into two subgroups: treatment and control. Ten s

Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) as an oncogenic factor in human tumors: a pan-cancer analysis.

BACKGROUND: Tracheostomy is one of the most common procedures done in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Decannulation is the weaning off from tracheostomy to maintain spontaneous respiration and/or airway protection. However, this step needs a near perfect coordination of brain, swallowing, coughing, phonation, and respiratory muscles. However, despite its perceived importance, there is no universally accepted protocol for this vital transition. In this systematic review of decannulation we focus attention to this important aspect of tracheostomy care. AIM: To compare the two methods of dec…

Unilateral Thalamic Deep Brain Stimulation for Voice Tremor.

BACKGROUND: Voice tremor (VT) is the involuntary and rhythmical phonatory instability of the voice. Recent findings suggest that unilateral deep brain stimulation of the ventral intermediate nucleus (Vim-DBS) can sometimes be effective for VT. In this exploratory analysis, we investigated the effect of Vim-DBS on VT and tested the hypothesis that unilateral thalamic stimulation is effective for patients with VT. METHODS: Seven patients with VT and previously implanted bilateral Vim-DBS were enrolled in the study. Each patient was randomized and recorded performing sustained phonation during t…

Translation, Adaptation, and Preliminary Validation of Dacakis and Davies' "Transsexual Voice Questionnaire (Male to Female)" in French.

UNLABELLED: Transgender MtF people (trans women) consult otorhinolaryngologists and vocologists with the aim of feminizing their voice and being consistently perceived as women. Treatment of these trans women always begins with a vocal assessment that is relatively unspecific as it was originally constructed for individuals with dysphonia. OBJECTIVES: This study examines the subjective portion of the assessment and specifically the self-assessment questionnaire. There is no French-language questionnaire designed to identify the issues facing people who want voice feminization and quantify the

Endoscopic laser thyroarytenoid myoneurectomy in patients with adductor spasmodic dysphonia: a pilot study on long-term outcome on voice quality.

OBJECTIVES: Adductor spasmodic dysphonia (ADSD) is a focal laryngeal dystonia, which compromises greatly the quality of life of the patients involved. It is a severe vocal disorder characterized by spasms of laryngeal muscles during speech, producing phonatory breaks, forced, strained and strangled voice. Its symptoms result from involuntary and intermittent contractions of thyroarytenoid muscle during speech, which causes vocal fold to strain, pressing each vocal fold against the other and increasing glottic resistance. Botulinum toxin injection remains the gold-standard treatment. However, a

Neuromonitoring of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgery.

Changes of the voice caused by injury of the external branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (EBSLN) during thyroid surgery may have essential consequences for a patient's life. Therefore, intraoperative effort has to be made to prevent EBSLN damage. Neuromonitoring has already been described as helpful to improve the identification rate of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. We describe our surgical procedure of upper thyroid pole preparation using neuromonitoring to avoid intraoperative damage of the superior laryngeal nerve. Neuromonitoring allowed safe preparation of the upper thyroid pole with
