Parasitic infection of the gut and protein-losing enteropathy.

Parasitic infection of the gut is highly prevalent in developing countries and contributes to the severe malnutrition associated with persistent diarrhoea in children. Using random faecal alpha 1-antitrypsin measurements as an index of protein-losing enteropathy, we examined children with and without parasitic infection of the gut. Seventeen percent of children with persistent diarrhoea had evidence of protein-losing enteropathy. This was found to be associated with hypoalbuminaemia in children infected with Strongyloides stercoralis. Only a minority (2 of 17) of children infected with Giardia

The epidemiology of Ascaris lumbricoides and other soil-transmitted helminths in primary school children from Ile-Ife, Nigeria.

An epidemiological survey of intestinal helminthiases was conducted on 766 primary school children aged 5-16 years from Ile-Ife, Nigeria. On the basis of stool examinations, the prevalence of Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookworm and Strongyloides stercoralis was 88.5, 84.5, 33.1 and 3% respectively. Intensity of infection was measured indirectly by egg counts for each species of helminth and also by counting worms passed after chemotherapy in the case of A. lumbricoides. The influence of host age and sex on infection levels was assessed. Relationships between the intensities of

Present status of subclinical intestinal malabsorption in the tropics.

A review of the literature on subclinical intestinal disease shows its probable relevance in certain nutritional deficiencies in the indigenous residents of tropical climates. A significant incidence of intestinal disease has been defined among asymptomatic fit-looking adult Nigerians. The results of subsequent investigation into the pathogenesis of this disorder strongly point to hypoalbuminaemia as the important factor capable of producing a biochemically and histologically defined malabsorptive state leading to subnormal nutritional status among members of this community.

The enhancive effect of the 2014-2016 El Niño-induced drought on the control of soil-transmitted helminthiases without anthelmintics: A longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminthiases (STHs) are common in tropical and subtropical regions. Southern Thailand experiences an extended … sly declined without further albendazole treatment compared to 2013. Furthermore, the prevalence of strongyloidiasis remained unchanged likely due to its low susceptibility to drought conditions, as it can reproduce within hosts. Conversely, the prevalence of other STHs consistently declined. The drought and possible improvements in sanitation and hygiene practice …

Performance evaluation of Baermann techniques: The quest for developing a microscopy reference standard for the diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are common in low and middle income countries where there is lack of access to clean water and sanitation. Effective diagnosis and treatment are essential for the control of STH infections. However, among STH parasites, Strongyloides stercoralis is the most neglected species, both in diagnostics and control strategies. Diagnostic methods cover different approaches, each with different sensitivities and specificities, such as serology, molecular techniques and microscopy based techniques. Of the later, the Baermann technique is the most commonly used

Evaluation of Parasitological Methods for the Detection of Strongyloides Stercoralis among Individuals in Selected Health Institutions In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis causes chronic intestinal infection that may lead to disseminated disease during immunosuppression. Therefore, efficient diagnostic methods are essential to detect silent and latent infections. The present study was aimed to compare the efficacy of parasitological methods for the detection of S. stercoralis infection. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 351 subjects (226 HIV positive and 125 HIV negative) from October 2005 to May 2006. The study participants were selected by systematic random sampling method. Fresh fecal samples were collect

IL-10- and TGFβ-mediated Th9 Responses in a Human Helminth Infection.

BACKGROUND: Th9 cells are a subset of CD4+ T cells that express the protoypical cytokine, IL-9. Th9 cells are known to effect protective immunity in animal models of intestinal helminth infections. However, the role of Th9 cells in human intestinal helminth infections has never been examined. METHODOLOGY: To examine the role of Th9 cells in Strongyloidis stercoralis (Ss), a common intestinal helminth infection, we compared the frequency of Th9 expressing IL-9 either singly (mono-functional) or co-expressing IL-4 or IL-10 (dual-functional) in Ss-infected individuals (INF) to frequencies in uni

Intestinal parasitosis: data analysis 2006-2011 in a teaching hospital of Ancona, Italy.

Intestinal parasites are a serious problem in developing countries, but should not be underestimated in industrialised countries either. Between January 2006 and December 2011, stool specimens and the scotch tests of 5323 Italian and non Italian patients (adults and children) attending the laboratory of our Infectious Diseases Clinic in a teaching Hospital at Ancona were analyzed specifically for intestinal parasites. The present study shows that, over a six-year period, of a total of 5323 patients 305 harboured at least one species of parasite (5.7%). Among the pathogenic protozoa Giardia lam

[Transient pruritus in an Ethiopean adoptee in Austria].

Strongyloidosis is highly endemic in humid tropical regions of the world and therefore should be considered in symptomatic travellers or immigrants. Clinical characteristics, diagnostic procedures and therapeutic options are discussed on the basis of a case report on a three years old adoptee from Ethiopia. In immunocompetent hosts the infection causes transient pruritic urticarial serpiginous lesions mostly located on the buttocks or lower extremities and unspecific gastrointestinal symptoms. In immunocompromised patients the infection can generalize and lead to hyperinfection, a syndrome let

Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) is required for protective immunity to larval Strongyloides stercoralis in mice.

TLR4 is important for immunity to various unicellular organisms and has been implicated in the immune responses to helminth parasites. The immune response against helminths is generally Th2-mediated and studies have shown that TLR4 is required for the development of a Th2 response against allergens and helminth antigens in mice. C3H/HeJ mice, which have a point mutation in the Tlr4 gene, were used in this study to determine the role of TLR4 in protective immunity to the nematode Strongyloides stercoralis. It was demonstrated that TLR4 was not required for killing larval S. stercoralis during t

Specificity and mechanism of immunoglobulin M (IgM)- and IgG-dependent protective immunity to larval Strongyloides stercoralis in mice.

Protective immunity in mice to the infective third-stage larvae (L3) of Strongyloides stercoralis was shown to be dependent on immunoglobulin M (IgM), complement activation, and granulocytes. The objectives of the present study were to determine whether IgG was also a protective antibody isotype and to define the specificity and the mechanism by which IgG functions. Purified IgG recovered from mice 3 weeks after a booster immunization with live L3 was shown to transfer high levels of protective immunity to naïve mice. IgG transferred into mice treated to block complement activation or to elimi

Influence of infection with non-filarial helminths on the specificity of serological assays for antifilarial immunoglobulin G4.

Serological assays based on the detection of immunoglobulin (Ig) G4 antibodies to crude filarial extracts are widely used for epidemiological and diagnostic purposes. We tested 195 samples collected in 1998 from an area of Brazil where filariasis is not endemic and 13 (6.7%) had levels of antifilarial IgG4 antibodies that were defined as positive. Both Strongyloides infection and the presence of Strongyloides antibody responses were associated with higher antifilarial antibody responses. None of the specimens had a positive response to the Brugia malayi recombinant antigen (Bm14). These data s

Strongyloides venezuelensis: longitudinal distribution of adult worms in the host intestine is influenced by mucosal sulfated carbohydrates.

Mechanisms for the longitudinal distribution of parasitic females of Strongyloides venezuelensis in the host intestine were investigated in mice. Adult worms were mostly recovered from the anterior-most one-third of the small intestine throughout the infection after infective larvae inoculation. Surgically implanted adult worms established well in the small intestinal mucosa, either in the duodenum or in the ileum, whereas a few worms could establish in the large intestine. Implanted worms in the small intestine remained where they were implanted until expelled. Mucosal mast cells were induced
