UV-visible absorption spectroelectrochemistry elucidated the different redox behaviours of Fe(III)- and Co(III)-mimochrome VI artificial enzymes, adsorbed on mesoporous conductive films of ITO. The reduction of the ferric complex was rapid and reversible, while the cobaltic complex exhibited irreversible processes probably related to multiple coordination states.

Co-doping size-tunable SnO2 nanocrystals into Er(3+) ions embedded silica thin films produces an enhancement of Er-related near-infrared emission by three orders of magnitude. Selective PL and PLE measurements show that energy transfer process occurs between SnO2 nanocrystals and Er(3+) ions. Quantitative studies of PL decay lifetime and photoluminescence temperature-dependence demonstrate that both high energy transfer efficiency from SnO2 nanocrystals to Er(3+) ions and the partial incorporation of Er(3+) ions into SnO2 nanocrystals contribute to the near-infrared emission enhancement. All t

The electrocatalytic behavior and anodic performance of Sb-SnO2 and nickel-doped Sb-SnO2 (Ni-Sb-SnO2) in sodium sulfate and sodium chloride electrolytes were compared. Nickel-doping increased the service lifetime by a factor of 9 and decreased the charge transfer resistance of the Sb-SnO2 electrodes by 65%. More importantly, Ni doping improved the electrocatalytic performance of Sb-SnO2 for the remediation of aqueous phenol and the inactivation of E. coli by a factor of more than 600% and ∼20%, respectively. In the sulfate electrolyte, the primary reactive oxygen species (ROS) identified were

We explore a hybrid material consisting of SnO(2) nanoparticles (NPs) embedded in the porous shells of carbon cages (SnO(2)-PSCC). The hybrid material exhibits improved kinetics of lithiation-delithiation and high reversible capacity, and excellent cyclic stability without capacity loss over 100 cycles at 500 mA g(-1) with a coulombic efficiency close to 100% after the initial cycle. This can be ascribed to the high electrical conductivity, the hierarchical porosity and the confinement effect of the PSCC on the volume change of SnO(2) NPs. The material has a large reversible capacity of 460 mA

Hydrogen peroxide biosensor based on the silica cavity array modified indium-doped tin oxide (ITO) electrode was constructed. An array of silica microcavities was fabricated by electrodeposition using the assembled polystyrene particles as template. Due to the resistance gradient of the silica cavity structure, the silica cavity exhibits a confinement effect on the electrochemical reactions, making the electrode function as an array of "soft" microelectrodes. The covalently immobilized microperoxidase-11(MP-11) inside these SiO2 cavities can keep its physiological activities, the electron tran

Photosystem II (PSII) offers a biological and sustainable route of photochemical water oxidation to O2 and can provide protons and electrons for the generation of solar fuels, such as H2. We present a rational strategy to electrostatically improve the orientation of PSII from a thermophilic cyanobacterium, Thermosynechococcus elongatus , on a nanostructured indium tin oxide (ITO) electrode and to covalently immobilize PSII on the electrode. The ITO electrode was modified with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of phosphonic acid ITO linkers with a dangling carboxylate moiety. The negatively char

Recently, decreasing the amount of indium (In) element in the indium tin oxide (ITO) used for transparent conductive oxide (TCO) thin film has become necessary for cost reduction. One possible approach to this problem is using printed ITO thin film instead of sputtered. Previous studies showed potential for printed ITO thin films as the TCO layer. However, nothing has been reported on the reliability of printed ITO thin films. Therefore, in this study, the reliability of printed ITO thin films was characterized. ITO nanoparticle ink was fabricated and printed onto a glass substrate followed by

Graphene oxide (G-O), a highly oxidized sheet of sp(2)-hybridized carbon with insulating electrical properties, can be transformed into graphene if it is adequately reduced. In the past, researchers believed that reduced G-O (rG-O) could be highly conducting, but it has been shown that the presence of extended vacancies and defects within rG-O negatively affect its electrical transport. Although these observations indicated that rG-O could not be used in the fabrication of any electronic device, in this issue of ACS Nano, Ruoff's group demonstrates that rG-O can indeed be used for producing ef

Using indium chloride as an In source, In-doped SnO(2) films were fabricated by sol-gel method through dip-coating on borofloat glass substrates. The undoped SnO(2) films were deposited in air between 400 and 600 °C to get optimum deposition temperature in terms of crystal quality and hence In-doped SnO(2) films were deposited in air at 600 °C. The effect of both deposition temperature and In content on structural, morphological, optical and electrical properties was investigated. The crystalline structure and orientation of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and surface mo

A poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) film was modified on an indium-tin oxide electrode in order to immobilize bacterial luciferase (BL) on the electrode surface. By using the modified electrode, flavin mononucleotide (FMN) was electrochemically reduced to FMNH(2), which is one of the substrates of the BL luminescence reaction, to control the bioluminescence reaction by BL. The BL reaction in the modified film could be promoted and controlled by the electrochemical generation of FMNH(2). This BL luminescence system was evaluated as a model system for the inhibitory assay of hydrophobic molecules on p

A facile and elegant methodology invoking the principles of Green Chemistry for the synthesis of porous tin dioxide nanospheres has been described. The low-temperature (∼50 °C) synthesis of SnO₂ nanoparticles and their self-assembly into organized, uniform, and monodispersed porous nanospheres with high surface area is facilitated by controlling the concentration of glucose, which acts as a stabilizing as well as structure-directing agent. A systematic control on the stannate to glucose molar concentration ratio determines the exact conditions to obtain monodispersed nanospheres, preferentiall

A microfabricated device for low-voltage electropermeabilization of adherent cells has been developed. The device, which is fabricated on a cover glass using mainly transparent materials, allows optical observation of cells through it. This device consists of an array of 6-μm circular electrodes connected via a transparent and conductive layer made of ITO (indium tin oxide) to give pulsed voltages for electropermeabilization. The surface of the electrode is coated with a thin Au film to reduce impedance. The insulation layer contains holes aligned on the electrodes to constrict the electric fi

A BIPV-powered smart window comprising a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) panel and an all-solid-state electrochromic (EC) stack is proposed. In the proposed device, the output voltage of the BIPV panel varies in accordance with the intensity of the incident light and is modulated in such a way as to generate the EC stack voltage required to maintain the indoor illuminance within a specified range. Two different EC stacks are fabricated and characterized, namely one stack comprising ITO/WO(3)/Ta(2)O(5)/ITO and one stack comprising ITO/WO(3)/lithium-polymer electrolyte/ITO. It is shown t

A seed-mediated growth method for surface modification was applied to the attachment of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to glassy carbon (GC) surfaces. By simply immersing a GC plate at first into a seed solution containing 4 nm Au nano-seed particles and then into a growth solution containing HAuCl(4), ascorbic acid and cetyltrimethyammonium bromide, AuNPs could be successfully attached to the GC surface via the growth of nanoparticles. A possible control of the size and density of AuNPs on GC was examined by observing surface images with a field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) afte

We present a bio-photoelectrode made of photosystem I complex (PSI) of cyanobacteria, Thermosynechococcus elongatus, and molecular wires. The newly designed and synthesized molecular wire similar to vitamin K1 (VK1) has a naphthoquinone moiety that can connect to PSI, and a terpyridine moiety for connection to a Co(II) ion. Surface immobilization of PSI and molecular wires was performed by a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation process at indium tin oxide (ITO) followed by stepwise coordination reactions. The PSI-immobilized ITO showed a photocurrent action spectrum, whose profile was cons

Ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a tetrameric protein complex, consisting of two large and two small subunits. The small subunits Y2 and Y4 form a heterodimer and are encoded by yeast genes RNR2 and RNR4, respectively. Loss of Y4 in yeast mutant rnr4Delta can be compensated for by up-regulated expression of Y2, and the formation of a small subunit Y2Y2 homodimer that allows for a partially functional RNR. However, rnr4Delta mutants exhibit slower growth than wild-type (WT) cells and are sensitive to many mutagens, amongst them UVC and photo-activated mono
