REM Gene Family in Sugar Beet and Functional BvREM12 in Salt Stress Tolerance.

Soil salinization acts as a major abiotic stress and severely hampers global agricultural productivity. Elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying plant salt tolerance is of great significance for crop improvement. Remorin (REM) proteins are plant-specific membrane marker proteins that play a key role in stress signaling; however, their function in the salt tolerance response of sugar beet remains unclear. In this study, 14 BvREM gene family members were identified. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that this family can be divided into five subgroups and exhibits significant interspecies col

Comprehensive plant disease classification and severity estimation for sustainable farming via automatic segmentation and multi-scale feature fusion.

Detecting plant leaf diseases at an early stage is one of the most important requirements for sustainable agriculture, increasing crop productivity, and achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). However, accurately recognizing them in real-world farm fields can still be difficult due to factors such as background complexity, changes in light conditions, and very similar looking classes from a visual standpoint. In order to solve these problems, the authors here present a new Multi-Scale Feature Fusion (MSFF) model that can offer robust and highly accurate performance in identi

Combining two high-density QTL maps with a reference genome to identify candidate genes for morphology, yield, and biotic resistance in faba bean (Vicia faba L.).

Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) is a key legume crop for sustainable agriculture, but its improvement is constrained by yield instability and susceptibility to major biotic stresses. In this study, we developed high-density linkage maps for two recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations, 29H x Vf136 (P1) and Histal x L8 (P2), phenotyped across multiple environments and years, to identify stable QTLs associated with morphology, yield components and resistance to Ascochyta fabae and the parasitic weed Orobanche spp. Using the Vfaba_v2 Axiom SNP array, the maps comprised 2,043 and 3,903 SNPs for P1 and

Application of Silicon, Zinc, and Zeolite Nanoparticles-A Tool to Enhance Drought Stress Tolerance in Coriander Plants for Better Growth Performance and Productivity.

Drought stress in arid regions is a serious factor affecting yield quantity and quality of economic crops. Under drought conditions, the application of nano-elements and nano-agents of water retention improved the water use efficiency, growth performance, and yield quantity of drought-stressed plants. For this objective, two field experiments were performed and organized as randomized complete block designs with six replications. The treatments included kaolin (5 t. ha-1) bentonite (12.5 t. ha-1), perlite (1.25 t.ha-1), N-zeolite (1.3 L.ha-1), N-silicon (2.5 L.ha-1), and N-zinc (2.5 L.ha-1). T

Independent Evolution of a Lysergic Acid Amide in Aspergillus Species.

Ergot alkaloids derived from lysergic acid have impacted humanity as contaminants of crops and as the bases of pharmaceuticals prescribed to treat dementia, migraines, and other disorders. Several plant-associated fungi in the Clavicipitaceae produce lysergic acid derivatives, but many of these fungi are difficult to culture and manipulate. Some Aspergillus species, which may be more ideal experimental and industrial organisms, contain an alternate branch of the ergot alkaloid pathway, but none were known to produce lysergic acid derivatives. We mined the genomes of Aspergillus species for erg

Bacteria, mould and yeast spore inactivation studies by scanning electron microscope observations.

Spores are the most resistant form of microbial cells, thus difficult to inactivate. The pathogenic or food spoilage effects of certain spore-forming microorganisms have been the primary basis of sterilization and pasteurization processes. Thermal sterilization is the most common method to inactivate spores present on medical equipment and foods. High pressure processing (HPP) is an emerging and commercial non-thermal food pasteurization technique. Although previous studies demonstrated the effectiveness of thermal and non-thermal spore inactivation, the in-depth mechanisms of spore inactivati

Wheat forage quality: significance, genetic and genomic advances, knowledge gaps, and future directions.

Winter wheat is grown worldwide primarily for grain, yet it also serves as an important cool-season forage, supporting livestock production when other feed is scarce. Wheat can be utilized as grazed pasture or harvested as hay, silage, and straw, and is widely used as dual-purpose (forage + grain) and double-cropping systems. During vegetative growth, wheat forage is highly palatable and nutritive, typically containing 20-30% crude protein (CP), and >80% digestibility, supporting rapid liveweight gains in beef cattle. However, forage quality is highly dynamic: as wheat matures, CP and energy d

Comparative genomic and phylogenetic analyses of Crataegus chloroplast genomes: insights for evolution and identification.

Crataegus spp. plants are valuable horticultural crops because of their extensive use in Chinese herbal medications, cosmetics, food production, and other industries. However, the wide variety of species, similar morphological characteristics, inherent hybridization, apomixis, and polyploidy have led to confusion in terms of their taxonomic status. Herein, a total of 18 complete chloroplast genomes including 17 Crataegus species and 1 Mespilus species were newly sequenced and comprehensively analyzed for comparative genomics and phylogenetic relationships. The 18 chloroplast genomes possessed

Integrative application of licorice root extract and melatonin improves faba bean growth and production in Cd-contaminated saline soil.

BACKGROUND: Globally, salinity poses a threat to crop productivity by hindering plant growth and development via osmotic stress and ionic cytotoxicity. Plant extracts have lately been employed as exogenous adjuvants to improve endogenous plant defense mechanisms when grown under various environmental stresses, such as salinity. This study investigated the potential of melatonin (Mt; 0, 50, and 100 mM) as an antioxidant and licorice root extract (LRE; 0.0 and 3%) as an organic biostimulant applied sequentially as a foliar spray on faba bean (Vicia faba L.) grown in cadmium (Cd)-contaminated sal

Evaluating the effect of diethyl ether and moringa oleifera antioxidant additives on the performance and emission characteristics of jatropha biodiesel-diesel blended fuel on CI engine - An experimental investigation.

Alternative fuels can be produced from both non-edible feedstocks and edible crops. The higher production costs and contaminating nature of vegetable biofuels, which cause engine component failure, make it conceivable to encourage the synthesis of biodiesel from non-edible sources. One of the most widely utilized alternative fuels is Jatropha biofuel, which has performance levels comparable to diesel fuels and can be used with CI (Compression Ignition) engines without any modifications. However when it comes to oxidative stability properties that impact shelf life and commercialization, the ma

Pathological consequences of low atmospheric pressure stunning in broiler chickens.

Low atmospheric pressure stunning (LAPS) is a novel approach to pre-slaughter stunning of chickens using progressive hypobaric hypoxia by the application of gradual decompression (280s cycle) according to a set of prescribed pressure curves. Low atmospheric pressure stunning produces a non-recovery state. Concerns have been raised relating to the possible pathological and welfare consequences of expansion of air in the body during LAPS. In a randomised trial, we compared the gross pathology of broilers exposed to LAPS with a control group euthanised by intravenous injection of pentobarbital so

Effects of Exposure Time and Biological State on Acquisition and Accumulation of Erwinia amylovora by Drosophila melanogaster.

Fire blight, caused by the bacterium Erwinia amylovora, is a disease devastating the production of rosaceous crops, primarily apple and pear, with worldwide distribution. Fire blight begins in the spring when primary inoculum is produced as ooze, which consists of plant sap, E. amylovora, and exopolysaccharides. Ooze is believed to be transferred to healthy tissues by wind, rain, and insects. However, the mechanisms by which insects locate and transmit ooze are largely undocumented. The goals of this study were to investigate the biological factors affecting acquisition of E. amylovora from oo

Aluminum resistance in wheat involves maintenance of leaf Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) content, decreased lipid peroxidation and Al accumulation, and low photosystem II excitation pressure.

The phytotoxic aluminum species (Al(3+)) is considered as the primary factor limiting crop productivity in over 40 % of world's arable land that is acidic. We evaluated the responses of two wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) with differential Al resistance, cv. Yecora E (Al-resistant) and cv. Dio (Al-sensitive), exposed to 0, 37, 74 and 148 μM Al for 14 days in hydroponic culture at pH 4.5. With increasing Al concentration, leaf Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) content decreased, as well as the effective quantum yield of photosystem II (PSII) photochemistry (Φ PSII ), while a gradual increase in leaf mem

Methylmercury in rivers draining cultivated watersheds.

Total mercury (THg) concentrations in streams draining cultivated watersheds in Minnesota, USA are strongly correlated with total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations, varying widely in response to precipitation-driven inputs of soil-derived suspended sediments. Methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in these waterways have not been studied, and little is known about mercury uptake mechanisms in resident fish populations. To begin to identify factors influencing MeHg concentrations and loadings in these streams, we measured THg and MeHg concentrations in unfiltered whole water samples from the
