Methods of surfactant administration and early ventilation in neonatal intensive care units in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates trends in methods of surfactant administration and early respiratory management in neonatal intensive care units [NICU] in New South Wales [NSW] and the Australian Capital Territory [ACT] in 2015 and evaluate whether differences in practice translate to variances in short term outcomes. METHODS: Surveys were sent to NICUs in NSW and ACT to ascertain their practice of surfactant administration and respiratory management. A retrospective data analysis with data from the NICUS database from 01/01/2013-30/06/2015 was performed. Included were all patients that r

The Impact of Pediatric Surgical Specialty Meetings: A 5-year Analysis of Presented Abstracts.

BACKGROUND: Abstracts presented at the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Surgery (AAP) and American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) meetings can be taken as a reasonable representation of academic activity in pediatric surgery. We sought to assess ongoing trends in pediatric surgical research by analyzing the scientific content of each association's yearly meeting. METHODS: Abstracts presented at AAP and APSA between 2009 and 2013 were identified from the final printed programs (n = 910). Video abstracts (n = 34) were excluded. Collected data included title, authors, classificat

Recurrent intestinal ischemia following surgery for gastric and duodenal perforations: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Extremely low birth weight (ELBW) is a risk factor for various gastrointestinal complications. In the recent decades, advances in medicine have increased the survival of ELBW infants with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). To our knowledge, there have been no reports of neonates or infants developing simultaneous gastric and duodenal perforations and later developing NEC. We report a case of an extremely low birth weight infant (ELBWI) who developed both gastric and duodenal perforations at the same time and developed NEC after operation for gastric and duodenal perforations. CASE P

Type of Re-Hospitalization and Association with Neonatal Morbidities in Infants of Very Low Birth Weight.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants are at high risk for long-term morbidities and an increased rate of re-hospitalization. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the type of re-hospitalization of very low birth weight (VLBW) infants, from infancy through adolescence, and to assess the association of neonatal morbidities with specific types of re-hospitalization. STUDY DESIGN: The study cohort comprised 6,385 VLBW infants who were registered with the Maccabi Healthcare Services (MHS) from their birth hospitalization. Data were collected for up to 18 years (median 10.7 years) following neon

Safety of Autologous Cord Blood Cells for Preterms: A Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth complications are one of the leading causes of death among children under 5 years of age. Despite advances in medical care, many survivors face a lifetime of disability, including mental and physical retardation, and chronic lung disease. More recently, both allogenic and autogenic cord blood cells have been applied in the treatment of neonatal conditions such as hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety of autologous, volume- and red blood cell- (RBC-) reduced, noncryopreserved umbilical cord blood (U

Vitamin A to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia in extremely low birth weight infants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin A (VA) supplementation reduces the risk of developing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). However, a previous meta-analysis showed that VA had minimal efficacy for preventing BPD in very low birth weight infants (VLBWIs). AIMS: To elucidate the effects of VA supplementation for BPD prevention in extremely low birth weight infants (ELBWIs). STUDY DESIGN: This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Components of the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum exposome impact on distinct short-term adverse neonatal outcomes of premature infants: A prospective cohort study.

We aimed to test the hypothesis that determinants of the perinatal clinical exposome related to the underlying etiology of premature birth (PTB) impact differently on select neonatal outcomes. We conducted a prospective longitudinal study of 377 singleton preterm neonates [gestational age (GA) at birth: 23-34 weeks] separated into three distinct contemporaneous newborn cohorts: i) spontaneous PTB in the setting of intra-amniotic infection/inflammation (yes-IAI, n = 116); ii) spontaneous PTB in the absence of IAI (no-IAI, n = 130), and iii) iatrogenic PTB for preeclampsia (iPTB-PE, n = 131). Is There a Role for the Enteral Administration of Serum-Derived Immunoglobulins in Human Gastrointestinal Disease and Pediatric Critical Care Nutrition?

Twenty years ago, there was profound, international interest in developing oral human, bovine, or chicken egg-derived immunoglobulin (Ig) for the prevention and nutritional treatment of childhood malnutrition and gastrointestinal disease, including acute diarrhea and necrotizing enterocolitis. Although such Ig products were shown to be effective, with both nutritional and antidiarrheal benefits, interest waned because of their cost and because of the perceived risk of bovine serum encephalitis (BSE). BSE is no longer considered a barrier to use of oral Ig, because the WHO has declared the Unit
