Water, sanitation, hygiene, and soil-transmitted helminth infection: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Preventive chemotherapy represents a powerful but short-term control strategy for soil-transmitted helminthiasis. Since humans are often re-infected rapidly, long-term solutions require improvements in water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH). The purpose of this study was to quantitatively summarize the relationship between WASH access or practices and soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the associations of improved WASH on infection with STH (Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, hookwor…

Pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic evaluation of soil-transmitted helminth infections among the Kensiu Negrito indigenous community.

This study evaluated soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections among the Kensiu Negrito indigenous community in Kampung Lubuk Legong, Kedah, Malaysia, before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 70 and 87 participants were examined in 2020 and 2022, respectively. STH infections were detected using the Kato-Katz and formalin-ether concentration methods. The overall prevalence declined from 85.7% in 2020 to 65.5% in 2022, a statistically significant reduction (p = 0.0054). Trichuris trichiura remained the most common STH infection (year 2020: 84.3%; year 2022: 63.2%), followed by Ascaris

Prevalence, risk factors and health consequences of soil-transmitted helminth infection on the Bijagos Islands, Guinea Bissau: A community-wide cross-sectional study.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are endemic and widespread across Sub-Saharan Africa. A community wide soil-transmitted helminth (STH) prevalence survey was performed on the island of Bubaque in Guinea-Bissau using both Kato-katz microscopy and qPCR methodology. Predictors of infection and morbidity indicators were identified using multivariable logistic regression, and diagnostic methods were compared using k statistics. Among 396 participants, prevalence of STH by microscopy was 23.2%, hookworm was the only species identified by this method and the mean infection intensity was 312 eggs per

Prevalence, intensity and associated risk factors of soil transmitted helminth infections: A comparison between Negritos (indigenous) in inland jungle and those in resettlement at town peripheries.

BACKGROUND: Formerly known as the Malaysian hunter gatherers, the Negrito Orang Asli (OA) were heavily dependent on the forest for sustenance and early studies indicated high prevalence of intestinal parasitism. Initiation of a redevelopment program in the 1970s aimed to demarginalize the OA was expected to reduce soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections. Gradually, the OA were relocated to new resettlement areas at the peripheries. The aim of this study was to compare STH infections between Negritos who are still living in the inland jungle with those living in resettlements. METHODOLOGY/P

Ijanikin: a study of environmental health in a rural Nigerian community.

Ijanikin is a typical Yoruba village in the rain forest belt area of Southern Nigeria. The childhood years in this community are fraught with the danger of numerous communicable diseases, compounded by inadequate supply of good quality foods to meet normal requirements and allow a margin of safety for the stress of infections. Overcrowding and poor ventilation in the houses are important factors in the spread of communicable diseases, while poor sanitation and deficient personal hygiene account for the heavy burden of intestinal parasitoses. Improvement in the health of this and other similar

Heavy burden of soil-transmitted helminth infections in a remote and impoverished indigenous community of Honduras revealed by real time polymerase chain reaction.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) remain highly prevalent in Honduras, disproportionately affecting rural and underserved populations. Diagnostic limitations, particularly for Necator americanus and Strongyloides stercoralis, hinder accurate burden estimation. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and species distribution of STH infections using real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in a remote, resource-limited setting. METHODS: A rapid, non-representative cross-sectional survey was conducted among children and adults in a remote community in the Honduran Moskitia. Stoo

Zoonotic Transmission of Soil-Transmitted Helminths in a Setting with Close Human-Animal Interaction: A Cross-Sectional Pilot Study from Meghalaya, India.

Soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) remain a major public health concern, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Although Ascaris lumbricoides, Trichuris trichiura, and hookworms (Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus) are commonly identified in humans, emerging evidence using molecular diagnostics capable of differentiating morphologically similar ova suggests zoonotic drivers of transmission, particularly in areas with close human-animal interaction. This pilot study investigated human and animal STH infections across nine villages of Meghalaya in the northeastern region of Ind
