Data of the clinical and laboratory examinations of 6 children (4 girls and 2 boys) with the syndrome of rigid vertebral column are presented. The effectiveness of rehabilitation of all the schizophrenic patients hospitalized for the first time to the Tomsk Psychiatric Hospital in 1948 to 1951 (the period of shock therapy), 1959 to 1961 (the period of one-way psychopharmacotherapy) and in 1969 to 1971 (the period of realization of comprehensive rehabilitation programs) was evaluated. High-quality remissions (A and B) comprised 36.7% in the first, 47.9% of the second, and 75.5% in the third period. The percentage of cases where the therapy was ineffective was almost five times less in the third period, as compared with the first one.

Hypersomnia is described in 11 patients who have had a cerebral circulation episode with prevalent localization of the lesion in the oral divisions of the brain trunk. In 14 observations of acute meningoencephalitis in children mainly under 3 years of the age, data pointing to an etiological role of herpes simplex type I virus, were obtained on laboratory examination. Six children died, and in the rest 8 children who survived gross residua were observed. The morphological picture showed extensive colliquation necroses in the parietal, temporal, and less frequently, in occipital lobes and the Varolian pons. In 4 cases out of 6 intranuclear inclusions were detected. The incidence of herpetic encephalitis was 16%.

The authors have found that disturbances of general sensitivity are characteristic of not only patients with hysterical neurosis, but also of patients with neurasthenia. The clinical structure and the time course of those disturbances in both groups of the patients were found to be rather close. In general, they differ substantially from the sensitivity disturbances in neuroses described earlier. The leading mechanism of the development of those sensitivity disturbances consists in an impairment of the function of the limbico-reticular complex structures.

A combined therapy was given to 30 patients with the acute stage of ischemic stroke that had complicated the course of cerebral atherosclerosis. The therapy consisted in exfusion of 250 to 300 ml of blood with subsequent infusion of low-molecular dextrans and various medicines. The changes of the general hemodynamic parameters at various stages of the therapy were compared with respective data obtained from 30 patients suffering from cerebral atherosclerosis but without acute cerebral circulation disorders, as well as from 20 healthy subjects. Results of the first four-year stage of long-time (planned for 15 years) examinations of the brain bioelectrical activity in 97 patients (aged 40 to 59 years) with initial signs of cerebral atherosclerosis are presented. A relative stability of the oscillatory process regularities was ascertained at annual examinations and courses of etiopathogenetic therapy. The frequency parameters of the alpha-activity were found to undergo certain age charges that took place in the presence of the relative increase of the share of low-frequency and dominantless curves.

Using the method of spontaneous rosette formation the authors studied the effects of morphine and naloxone (a specific morphine antagonist) on T-lymphocytes of man peripheral blood. Treatment of the lymphocytes with morphine led to a diminution of the number of rosette-forming cells. Naloxone did not influence the rosette formation process, but eliminated the specific effect of morphine. The opiate receptors on the thymus-dependent lymphocytes may be an instrument of hormonal regulation of cell interaction processes in individual lymphocyte populations.

An induction of an imagined visual sensation with the eyes closed can be regarded as a form of self-suggestion in the state of wakefulness. On receiving an instruction on imagining a visual sensation most healthy persons show a sharp weakening of disappearance of the alpha-rhythm depression on the EEG (in distinction from subjects who have not had hyperventilation). These findings point to an importance of using electroencephalography in combination with hyperventilation in psychotherapeutic practice for objective estimation of the effect of suggestion in wakefulness.
