A novel automated indirect immunofluorescence autoantibody evaluation.

Autoantibodies (AAb), especially antinuclear (ANAs) and anticytoplasmatic antibodies (ACyA), are essential diagnosing markers for several autoimmune diseases. The current gold standard method for ANA detection is manual indirect immunofluorescence (IIF) on human epithelial-2 (HEp-2) cells. However, this technique is cost and time consuming, and characterized by considerable intra- and interlaboratory variability. Thus, an automated IIF-HEp-2 reader has been developed recently. In the current study, we compared the performance of the automated AAb IIF-HEp-2 interpretation to conventional detect

When Gender Arrives: Predictive Language Processing in the Third Year.

Predictive language comprehension allows children to use prior context to anticipate upcoming information before it becomes available in speech. Although young children use sentence meaning to guide real-time comprehension, less is known about when they generate more specific expectations about upcoming words without direct cues. Across two visual-world eye-tracking experiments, we used a grammatical contrast in Spanish as a test case to examine whether children aged 24, 30, and 36 months could use sentence context to guide attention before the expected word was heard. Highly predictable sente

Reduced homotopic interhemispheric connectivity in psychiatric disorders: evidence for both transdiagnostic and disorder specific features.

There is considerable interest in the significance of structural and functional connections between the two brain hemispheres in terms of both normal function and in relation to psychiatric disorders. In recent years, many studies have used voxel mirrored homotopic connectivity analysis of resting state data to investigate the importance of connectivity between homotopic regions in the brain hemispheres in a range of neuropsychiatric disorders. The current review summarizes findings from these voxel mirrored homotopic connectivity studies in individuals with autism spectrum disorder, addiction

Social impairment in survivors of pediatric brain tumors via reduced social attention and emotion-specific facial expression recognition.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Survivors of pediatric brain tumors (SPBT) experience significant social challenges, including fewer friends and greater isolation than peers. Difficulties in face processing and visual social attention have been implicated in these outcomes. This study evaluated facial expression recognition (FER), social attention, and their associations with social impairments in SPBT. METHODS: SPBT (N = 54; ages 7-16) at least 2 years post treatment completed a measure of FER, while parents completed measures of social impairment. A subset (N = 30) completed a social attention asses

Recurrent cystoid macular oedema associated with high-dose cytarabine therapy.

PURPOSE: To describe a rare case of recurrent, reversible cystoid macular oedema (CME) associated with high-dose cytarabine therapy in a patient with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). CASE PRESENTATION: A 39-year-old woman with AML developed recurrent bilateral visual disturbances following multiple cycles of high-dose cytarabine monotherapy. After each chemotherapy cycle, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography revealed cystoid intraretinal spaces predominantly involving the outer nuclear and outer plexiform layers. Fluorescein angiography demonstrated faint perifoveal leakage without the

Benign Yellow Dot Maculopathy in a Palestinian Child: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Benign yellow dot maculopathy (BYDM) is a recently recognized macular phenotype, first described in 2017. It may occur sporadically or follow a familial pattern. The condition is characterized by a rare, asymptomatic, early-onset, nonprogressive maculopathy, with multiple yellow dots at the macula and minimal or no functional impairment. Owing to its benign and frequently asymptomatic course, this condition is likely underdiagnosed and underreported. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 6-year-old Palestinian patient who was incidentally found to have bilateral, discrete yellow dots c

Analyzing the influence of deafness on serial position function for letters.

Previous research has shown that letter and digit identification typically follows a W-shaped serial position function, whereas symbol identification exhibits an inverted U-shaped pattern. Given that reading outcomes vary widely among deaf populations, the present study investigated whether deaf adults display serial position functions similar to hearing adults. Using the Target-in-String Identification paradigm, we compared letter, digit, and symbol recognition across five target positions in matched groups of deaf and hearing participants. Both groups demonstrated a pronounced first-letter a

Using rare genetic mutations to revisit structural brain asymmetry.

Asymmetry between the left and right hemisphere is a key feature of brain organization. Hemispheric functional specialization underlies some of the most advanced human-defining cognitive operations, such as articulated language, perspective taking, or rapid detection of facial cues. Yet, genetic investigations into brain asymmetry have mostly relied on common variants, which typically exert small effects on brain-related phenotypes. Here, we leverage rare genomic deletions and duplications to study how genetic alterations reverberate in human brain and behavior. We designed a pattern-learning

[Test battery for objective assessment and differential diagnosis in the early stage of suspected development of presenile dementia of the Alzheimer type].

The clinical diagnosis of organic brain syndromes (especially of primary degenerative dementia) in their early stages is uncertain or only tentative. We used a set of relatively simple tests to support the hypothesis that the disturbance of several operational brain functions precedes memory decline in primary degenerative dementia. Twenty-one patients with early stage, presenile onset of DAT, 14 patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and a questionable dementia, an age-matched control group (EC, n = 15), and a younger control group (YC, n = 16) were examined in the following tests: labyri

A deep neural network model of the primate superior colliculus for emotion recognition.

Although sensory processing is pivotal to nearly every theory of emotion, the evaluation of the visual input as 'emotional' (e.g. a smile as signalling happiness) has been traditionally assumed to take place in supramodal 'limbic' brain regions. Accordingly, subcortical structures of ancient evolutionary origin that receive direct input from the retina, such as the superior colliculus (SC), are traditionally conceptualized as passive relay centres. However, mounting evidence suggests that the SC is endowed with the necessary infrastructure and computational capabilities for the innate recognit

Respiratory Variability during Sleep in Methadone Maintenance Treatment Patients.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) patients have a high prevalence of central sleep apnea and ataxic breathing related to damage to central respiratory rhythm control. However, the quantification of sleep apnea indices requires laborious manual scoring, and ataxic breathing pattern is subjectively judged by visual pattern recognition. This study proposes a semi-automated technique to characterize respiratory variability in MMT patients. METHODS: Polysomnography, blood, and functional outcomes of sleep questionnaire (FOSQ) from 50 MMT patients and 20 healthy subjects with

Taking Language Embedded 3D Gaussian Splatting into the Wild.

Recent advances in leveraging large-scale Internet photo collections for 3D reconstruction have enabled immersive virtual exploration of landmarks and historic sites worldwide. However, existing methods primarily focus on visual appearance reconstruction, often overlooking the interactive semantic understanding of these 3D scenes (e.g., identifying specific building parts or scene details), which remains largely confined to browsing static text-image pairs. Therefore, can we draw inspiration from 3D in-the-wild reconstruction techniques and use unconstrained photo collections to create an imme

Multiphysical Tumor Tissue Modeling for Improved Multimodal Sensor-Based Diagnostics.

Accurate differentiation between tumorous and healthy tissue is critical in oncological surgeries to ensure complete tumor resection while minimizing the loss of healthy tissue. However, tissue heterogeneity and visual impairments inherent in endoscopic procedures significantly limit the accuracy of current visual tissue examination. The use of multi-physical endoscopic sensors and subsequent fusion offers a promising solution. Impedance and waterflow elastography sensors are able to capture distinct electrical and mechanical properties of bladder tissue. Nonetheless, effective fusion of the t

Visual Recognition Is Heralded by Shifts in Local Field Potential Oscillations and Inhibitory Networks in Primary Visual Cortex.

Learning to recognize and filter familiar, irrelevant sensory stimuli eases the computational burden on the cerebral cortex. Inhibition is a candidate mechanism in this filtration process, and oscillations in the cortical local field potential (LFP) serve as markers of the engagement of different inhibitory neurons. We show here that LFP oscillatory activity in visual cortex is profoundly altered as male and female mice learn to recognize an oriented grating stimulus-low-frequency (∼15 Hz peak) power sharply increases, whereas high-frequency (∼65 Hz peak) power decreases. These changes report

The present and future of intrapartum computerized cardiotocography: role of pattern recognition incorporating single vs. multiple parameters.

Computer assisted cardiotocography holds a great promise in minimizing human errors thereby improving perinatal outcome. Despite exponential growth (Moore's law) in computing power for decades, this promise remains unrealized. The systematic analyses of studies on computerized cardiotocography offer little guide to future. This analytical review presents a more qualitative discussion of available evidence as well as concepts regarding the development and acceptance of computerized cardiotocography. To begin with, a workable approach would be for computer algorithms to follow the most scientifi

Has an angel shown the way? Etiological and therapeutic implications of the PCP/NMDA model of schizophrenia.

Over the last 20 years, glutamatergic models of schizophrenia have become increasingly accepted as etiopathological models of schizophrenia, based on the observation that phencyclidine (PCP) induces a schizophrenia-like psychosis by blocking neurotransmission at N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA)-type glutamate receptors. This article reviews developments in two key predictions of the model: first, that neurocognitive deficits in schizophrenia should follow the pattern of deficit predicted based on underlying NMDAR dysfunction and, second, that agents that stimulate NMDAR function should be therapeut

dp-BREATH: Heat maps and probabilistic classification assisting the analysis of abnormal lung regions.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Identifying abnormalities in chest CT scans is an important and challenging task, demanding time and effort from specialists. Different parts of a single lung image may present both normal and abnormal characteristics. Thus, detecting a single lung as healthy (normal) or not is inaccurate. METHODS: In this work we propose dp-BREATH, a method capable of detecting abnormalities in pulmonary tissue regions and directing the specialist's attention to the lung region containing them. It starts by highlighting regions that may indicate pulmonary abnormalities based on the

A deep learning approach for line-level Amharic Braille image recognition.

Braille, the most popular tactile-based writing system, uses patterns of raised dots arranged in cells to inscribe characters for visually impaired persons. Amharic is Ethiopia's official working language, spoken by more than 100 million people. To bridge the written communication gap between persons with and without eyesight, multiple Optical braille recognition systems for various language scripts have been developed utilizing both statistical and deep learning approaches. However, the need for half-character identification and character segmentation has complicated these systems, particular
