In vivo and in vitro production of inhibin by cryptorchid testes from adult rats.

Adult male rats were made bilaterally cryptorchid for 3, 7, 10, and 14 days, and the peripheral serum, testicular vein serum, and interstiti … ibin secretion by the cryptorchid testis which seems to be due to a direct effect of temperature on Sertoli cells. The subsequent decline in inhibin secretion could be due to the disruption of the seminiferous epithelium.

Zika virus and male reproductive health: essential updates for andrologists and fertility specialists.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV), a mosquito-borne flavivirus, remains a concern for reproductive health despite the waning of the 2015-2016 epidemic. Unique among arboviruses, ZIKV can be sexually transmitted, with viral RNA persisting in semen beyond the acute phase, posing potential risks to male fertility and assisted reproduction. This narrative review provides clinicians with a contemporary understanding of ZIKV epidemiology, virology, and its implications for male reproductive care. RESULTS: ZIKV transmission has stabilised into low-level endemicity in Central and South America, with Euro

Yolk Sac Tumor of the Ovary: A Report of 150 Cases and Review of the Literature.

One hundred fifty yolk sac tumors (YSTs) of the ovary in patients from 1 to 61 (mean: 21.5) years of age are described; 75% of the patients were in the second and third decades and only 1 was above 50 years of age. The clinical manifestations were typically related to a fast-growing adnexal mass; endocrine manifestations (hirsutism) were present in only 2 cases. The tumors were all unilateral and 70% were ≥15 cm; an associated dermoid cyst was present in 20 cases. The tumors were solid and cystic in 57% of the cases, 25% were multicystic, and 18% uniformly solid. The solid tissue was typically

Effects of periodontal disease on the reproductive performance and offspring of Wistar rats.

BACKGROUND: Periodontitis can induce systemic inflammation, and it may affect the testicles and male reproductive performance. This study investigated the effects of periodontitis on the testicles, reproductive performance, and offspring development in male rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were induced with periodontitis by ligating their first molars. After 14 days of inducing periodontal lesions, the animals were observed for an additional 54 days, corresponding to a complete cycle of spermatogenesis. Rats from the periodontitis group (GP, n = 12) and the control group (GC, n = 12) were pair

Proteomic Investigations of Autism Brain Identify Known and Novel Pathogenetic Processes.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a set of heterogeneous neurodevelopmental conditions defined by impairments in social communication and restricted, repetitive behaviors, interests or activities. Only a minority of ASD cases are determined to have a definitive etiology and the pathogenesis of most ASD is poorly understood. We hypothesized that a global analysis of the proteomes of human ASD vs. control brain, heretofore not done, would provide important data with which to better understand the underlying neurobiology of autism. In this study, we characterized the proteomes of two brain region

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix: a report of 14 cases and a discussion of its unusual clinicopathological associations.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix is an uncommon presentation of the most common soft-tissue sarcoma in the first decades of life. Unlike embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in other anatomic sites, in which 70-80% of cases present before 9 years of age, the average age in our series of 14 cervical cases was 12.4 years (median, 13 years), with an age range of 9 months to 32 years at diagnosis. Of the 14 cases, 12 presented as a polyp at the cervical os; two patients had an infiltrative mass in the cervix without a botryoid polyp. The polyps measured 1.5-5 cm and all had the histopatholog

Antisperm antibodies in prepubertal boys treated with chemotherapy for malignant or non-malignant diseases and in boys with genital tract abnormalities.

In several childhood diseases which have the ensuing risk of infertility in adult life because of direct hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis involvement, or as a consequence of therapeutic toxicity, the role of antisperm antibodies (ASA) is rarely addressed. The aim of this study was to investigate the occurrence of ASA in a large prepubertal male population (aged 1.2-13 years) consisting of three groups: Group I, 52 patients affected by malignant diseases (lymphoblastic leukaemia, malignant lymphoma, or Wilm's tumour, n = 42), or by nephrotic syndrome (n = 10); Group II, 212 patients with

Laterality and Breed Distribution of Cryptorchidism in 251 Dogs: A Retrospective Clinical Study.

Cryptorchidism is one of the most frequently diagnosed developmental disorders of the male canine reproductive system, defined as the failure of one or both testes to descend into the scrotum. Physiologically, testicular descent is typically completed by six to eight weeks of age, although some authors extend this period to sixteen weeks. Failure of testicular descent beyond this timeframe is considered pathological. The condition has multiple causes and affects between 1% and 10% of the canine population. Genetics is the most significant factor, indicating the hereditary basis of cryptorchidi

Case Report: Effect of testicular adenomatoid tumors on testicular endocrine function in children.

Adenomatoid tumors, rare benign mesothelial neoplasms primarily involving the reproductive tract, account for 30% of paratesticular masses and predominantly localize to the epididymal head. Although typically diagnosed in adults (mean age: 33 years), pediatric cases are exceptionally rare. Conservative excision with testicular preservation is optimal, yet diagnostic ambiguity often leads to unnecessary orchidectomy. A 5.2-year-old boy presented with asymptomatic left testicular enlargement. MRI identified a 13 × 14 mm heterogeneous mass on the lateral testis. Intraoperative frozen section anal

45,X male - rare case of unbalanced translocation of Y chromosome to chromosome 2 presenting with developmental delay, learning difficulty and obesity.

SUMMARY: A male phenotype accompanied by a 45,X karyotype is rare. It may occur due to Y chromosomal translocation or insertion to X/autosome. Clinical presentation may vary depending on the presence of the Y chromosomal locus and the degree of loss of autosome material. 45,X males can present with short stature and Turner syndrome phenotype due to haploinsufficiency of genes which are normally expressed in both X and Y chromosomes. The presence of the sex-determining region Y (SRY) gene leads to the differentiation of bipotential gonads to testis. Most individuals go through puberty normally,

[GnRH agonist implants in small animal practice - what do we know 13 years following EU registration?].

The availability of GnRH agonist implants offers the possibility of a reversible, temporary downregulation of endocrine and germinative testicular function in male dogs and hobs. This review provides an overview of the registered indication, the induction of temporary infertility in healthy, intact, sexually mature male dogs (4.7 and 9.4 mg deslorelin) and hobs (9.4 mg deslorelin) as well as various off-label indications. Off-label use requires strict indications, informed consent from the owner and a lack of licensed medication (safe and optimum effect). Off-label indications in the male dog

New Biomarkers to Evaluate Hyperandrogenemic Women and Hypogonadal Men.

Androgens can have variable effects on men and women. Women may be evaluated for androgen excess for several reasons. Typically, young premenopausal women present with clinical symptoms of hirsutism, alopecia, irregular menses, and/or infertility. The most common cause of these symptoms is polycystic ovary syndrome. After menopause, even though ovaries stop producing estrogen, they continue to produce androgen, and women can have new onset of hirsutism and alopecia. Laboratory evaluation involves measurement of the major ovarian and adrenal androgens. In women, age, phase of the menstrual cycl

History of cryptorchidism and ejaculate volume as simple predictors for the presence of testicular sperm.

Testicular volume, hormones, and growth factors are used as predictors of finding motile testicular sperm in azoospermic men. In this study, the possible predictive value of very simple parameters such as systematic history, clinical examination, and determination of ejaculate volume have been evaluated. Two-hundred and sixty-two consecutive non-vasectomized men with azoospermia/aspermia were evaluated by systematic history, clinical examination, ultrasonography of the scrotal content, and hormonal and genetic analyses. Hormonal analyses included, as a minimum, determination of follicular stim

Anti-Müllerian hormone as a seminal marker for spermatogenesis in non-obstructive azoospermia.

Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) also known as Müllerian inhibiting substance or factor, is a Sertoli cell-secreted glycoprotein responsible in male embryos for Müllerian duct regression. However, its role in adults remains unknown. AMH seminal concentrations have been evaluated using an enzyme-linked immunoassay in three groups of young men: group 1, fertile donors (n = 18); group 2, obstructive azoospermia (n = 9) after vasectomy or associated with deferent duct agenesia; and group 3, non-obstructive azoospermia with spermatogenesis deficiency and normal karyotype (n = 23). AMH was present in se
