A systematic review on the role of EEG and fMRI-Neurofeedback training in the treatment of substance use disorders and behavioral addiction.

Neurofeedback (NF), a form of biofeedback, is used to enhance the self-regulation of brain functions by assessing brain activity and delivering feedback signals to ameliorate emotional attributes, cognitive functions, and behaviors. Despite the potential role of NF in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, a number of gaps such as variations in NF methods persist. This study aims to address such gaps and present comprehensive insights into EEG and fMRI-NF applications in SUD management. This study has been conducted according to the PRISMA guidelines. The search spanned four major databases:

Neurovascular Coupling Analysis Based on Multivariate Variational Gaussian Process Convergent Cross-Mapping.

Neurovascular coupling (NVC) provides important insights into the intricate activity of brain functioning and may aid in the early diagnosis of brain diseases. Emerging evidences have shown that NVC could be assessed by the coupling between electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). However, this endeavor presents significant challenges due to the absence of standardized methodologies and reliable techniques for coupling analysis of these two modalities. In this study, we introduced a novel method, i.e., the collaborative multi-output variational Gaussian p

Brain function assessment of acupuncture for chronic insomnia disorder with mild cognitive dysfunction based on fNIRS: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Insomnia Disorder (CID) is highly prevalent among older adults and impairs cognitive function. Insomnia accelerates the progression of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and increases the risk of developing dementia. Acupuncture has been demonstrated in improving sleep quality and cognitive function. This study aims to explore the functional brain characteristics of CID with MCI patients and to assess the effects of acupuncture therapy using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS AND DESIGN: This study is a single-center randomized controlled trial. Participan

Features of the speech processing network in post- and prelingually deaf cochlear implant users.

The onset of hearing loss can lead to altered brain structure and functions. However, hearing restoration may also result in distinct cortical reorganization. A differential pattern of functional remodeling was observed between post- and prelingual cochlear implant users, but it remains unclear how these speech processing networks are reorganized after cochlear implantation. To explore the impact of language acquisition and hearing restoration on speech perception in cochlear implant users, we conducted assessments of brain activation, functional connectivity, and graph theory-based analysis u

Granzyme F: Exhaustion Marker and Modulator of Chimeric Antigen Receptor T Cell-Mediated Cytotoxicity.

PURPOSE: The physiologic transition from a fetus to a neonate is composed of a series of complex processes that include changes in cerebral tissue oxygenation saturation (cSO2). Monitoring this process is of great importance. This study aimed to define the cSO2 reference interval in neonates without medical support, extending the measurements until 1 hour after birth, and to determine the incidence of abnormally low or high regional cerebral oxygenation during the neonatal transition. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 418 neonates delivered by cesarean section were enrolled. Near-infrared spec

Potential of acetaminophen on the sublingual microcirculation and peripheral tissue perfusion of febrile septic patients: prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Acetaminophen (ACT) has been studied in septic patients with detectable plasmatic levels of cell-free hemoglobin (Hb), where it demonstrated to inhibit the hemoprotein-mediated lipid peroxidation and oxidative injury, with a potential of beneficial effect on the endothelium. On the basis of this background, the aim of this study was to evaluate the sublingual microcirculation and the peripheral tissue perfusion before-and-after administration of ACT on clinical judgment in a cohort of febrile septic and septic shock patients. METHODS: Prospective observational study. 50 adult sept

Neurocomputations on dual-brain signals underlie interpersonal prediction during a natural conversation.

Prediction on the partner's speech plays a key role in a smooth conversation. However, previous studies on this issue have been majorly conducted at the single-brain rather than dual-brain level, leaving the interpersonal prediction hypothesis untested. To fill this gap, this study combined a neurocomputational modeling approach with a natural conversation paradigm in which two salespersons persuaded a customer to buy their product with their haemodynamic signals being collected using functional near-infrared spectroscopy hyperscanning. First, the results showed a cognitive hierarchy in a natu

Cortical responses to social stimuli in infants at elevated likelihood of ASD and/or ADHD: A prospective cross-condition fNIRS study.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are highly prevalent neurodevelopmental conditions that often co-occur and present both common and distinct neurodevelopmental profiles. Studying the developmental pathways leading to the emergence of ASD and/or ADHD symptomatology is crucial in understanding neurodiversity and discovering the mechanisms that underpin it. This study used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate differences in cortical specialization to social stimuli between 4- to 6-month-old infants at typical and elevated

The effect of MnCO3 on the gain coefficient for the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition of Er3+ ions and near-infrared emission bandwidth flatness of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped barium zinc silicate glasses.

The roles of Mn2+ ions in the MnCO3 compound, leading to the formation of an Mn2+-Yb3+ dimer and affecting the gain coefficient for the 4I13/2 → 4I15/2 transition of Er3+ ions and near-infrared (NIR) emission bandwidth flatness of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+ co-doped in SiO2-ZnO-BaO (SZB) barium zinc silicate glasses, were investigated in this work. The composition of all elements from the original raw materials that exist in the host glasses was determined using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Under the excitation of a 980 nm laser diode (LD), the NIR emission of Er3+/Tm3+/Yb3+-co-doped SZB gl

Photophysical, thermal, and DFT studies on a tetraaryl-azadipyrromethene ligand and its zinc(II) complex.

An azadipyrromethene ligand (H1) and homoleptic zinc(II) (H1-Zn) complex were synthesized. The resulting structures were elucidated by NMR, FTIR, and HRMS techniques. The photophysical properties and effects of complexing the zinc(II) atom to azadipyrromethene ligands in solution were studied by means of UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Experimental findings were elucidated using density functional theory computations and interfragment charge transfer (IFCT) and electron-hole analyses. The fluorescence features were found to be negligible. The ligand molecule decayed at a rate

Newer indications for neuromonitoring in critically ill neonates.

Continuous neuromonitoring in the neonatal intensive care unit allows for bedside assessment of brain oxygenation and perfusion as well as cerebral function and seizure identification. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) reflects the balance between oxygen delivery and consumption, and use of multisite monitoring of regional oxygenation provides organ-specific assessment of perfusion. With understanding of the underlying principles of NIRS as well as the physiologic factors which impact oxygenation and perfusion of the brain, kidneys and bowel, changes in neonatal physiology can be more easily r

Assessing Passengers' Motion Sickness Levels Based on Cerebral Blood Oxygen Signals and Simulation of Actual Ride Sensation.

(1) Background: After motion sickness occurs in the ride process, this can easily cause passengers to have a poor mental state, cold sweats, nausea, and even vomiting symptoms. This study proposes to establish an association model between motion sickness level (MSL) and cerebral blood oxygen signals during a ride. (2) Methods: A riding simulation platform and the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology are utilized to monitor the cerebral blood oxygen signals of subjects in a riding simulation experiment. The subjects' scores on the Fast Motion sickness Scale (FMS) are determi

Study of Motion Sickness Model Based on fNIRS Multiband Features during Car Rides.

Motion sickness is a common physiological discomfort phenomenon during car rides. In this paper, the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technique was used in real-world vehicle testing. The fNIRS technique was utilized to model the relationship between changes in blood oxygenation levels in the prefrontal cortex of passengers and motion sickness symptoms under different motion conditions. To enhance the accuracy of motion sickness classification, the study utilized principal component analysis (PCA) to extract the most significant features from the test data. Wavelet decomposition w

The importance of monitoring cerebral oxygenation in non brain injured patients.

Over the past few years, the use of non-invasive neuromonitoring in non-brain injured patients has increased, as a result of the recognition that many of these patients are at risk of brain injury in a wide number of clinical scenarios and therefore may benefit from its application which allows interventions to prevent injury and improve outcome. Among these, are post cardiac arrest syndrome, sepsis, liver failure, acute respiratory failure, and the perioperative settings where in the absence of a primary brain injury, certain groups of patients have high risk of neurological complications. Brain-muscle interplay during endurance self-paced exercise in normobaric and hypobaric hypoxia.

Purpose: Hypoxia is one major environmental factor, supposed to mediate central motor command as well as afferent feedbacks at rest and during exercise. By using a comparison of normobaric (NH) and hypobaric (HH) hypoxia with the same ambient pressure in oxygen, we examined the potential differences on the cerebrovascular and muscular regulation interplay during a self-paced aerobic exercise. Methods: Sixteen healthy subjects performed three cycling time-trials (250 kJ) in three conditions: HH, NH and normobaric normoxia (NN) after 24 h of exposure. Cerebral and muscular oxygenation were asses

A Multi-Method Approach to Addressing the Toddler Data Desert in Attention Research.

Visual attention skills undergo robust development change during infancy and continue to co-develop with other cognitive processes in early childhood. Despite this, this is a general disconnect between measures of the earliest foundations of attention during infancy and later development of attention in relation to executive functioning during the toddler years. To examine associations between these different measures of attention, the current study administered an oculomotor task (infant orienting with attention, IOWA) and a manual response (Flanker) task with a group of toddlers. We collecte

Improving Infant Hydrocephalus Outcomes in Uganda: A Longitudinal Prospective Study Protocol for Predicting Developmental Outcomes and Identifying Patients at Risk for Early Treatment Failure after ETV/CPC.

Infant hydrocephalus poses a severe global health burden; 80% of cases occur in the developing world where patients have limited access to neurosurgical care. Surgical treatment combining endoscopic third ventriculostomy and choroid plexus cauterization (ETV/CPC), first practiced at CURE Children's Hospital of Uganda (CCHU), is as effective as standard ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) placement while requiring fewer resources and less post-operative care. Although treatment focuses on controlling ventricle size, this has little association with treatment failure or long-term outcome. This stud

Clinical Utility of Intravascular Imaging: Past, Present, and Future.

Although it is the tool used by most interventional cardiologists to assess the severity of coronary artery disease and guide treatment, coronary angiography has many limitations because it is a shadowgraph, depicting planar projections of the contrast-filled lumen that are often foreshortened rather than imaging the diseased vessel itself. Currently available intravascular imaging technologies include grayscale intravascular ultrasound (IVUS), optical coherence tomography (OCT) (the light analogue of IVUS), and near-infrared spectroscopy that detects lipid within the vessel wall and that has
