Due to the process of internal autoinfection, even chronic asymptomatic infections with Strongyloides stercoralis have the potential to become severe disseminated disease with fatal outcome. Intermittent and scanty larval excretion makes parasitologic diagnosis difficult. Serodiagnosis is helpful, but antigen preparation from infective larvae requires access to patients or immunosuppressed experimental animals. For these reasons, attention has turned to recombinant antigens for immunodiagnosis. A 31-kDa candidate antigen (NIE) derived from an L3 cDNA library is described in this report. Multip

Strongyloides ratti has a complex life-cycle with two adult generations, one free-living and dioecious and one parasitic and female only. The parasitic females reproduce by parthenogenesis, but it is unclear whether this is mitotic or meiotic in nature. This question has been addressed genetically by analysing the progeny of parasitic females that were heterozygous at an actin locus for evidence of allelic segregation. Such progeny were similarly heterozygous showing that segregation had not occurred. It was therefore concluded that reproduction in the parasitic female of S. ratti is functiona

Infection of a dog with Strongyloides stercoralis filariform larvae resulted in a persistent infection. Patent infections were not seen in rabbits, guinea-pigs, rats and 11 inbred strains and one outbred strain of mice. Manipulation of factors known to influence S. ratti infections in mice, such as age and sex of the host and the route of larval presentation, did not facilitate the appearance of rhabditiform larvae in the stools. Administration of immunosuppressive doses of corticosterioids to rabbits, guniea-pigs and C57Bl/6 mice did not permit complete development. Similarly, th course of in

In experimental infection with Strongyloides venezuelensis, the acute and recovery phases can be distinguished, unlike human infections caused by Strongyloides stercoralis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the production of anti-Strongyloides IgG antibodies and the recognition of immunogenic protein bands during the acute and the recovery phases in rats experimentally infected with S. venezuelensis. Rats were infected subcutaneously with 400 or 4,000 S. venezuelensis infective larvae. The acute phase was characterized by elimination of a large number of eggs in the faeces on days 6-

About 225 million malaria cases have been reported worldwide in 2009, and one-third of the world's population is infected with parasitic helminths. As helminths and Plasmodium are co-endemic, concurrent infections frequently occur. Helminths have been shown to modulate the host's immune response; therefore, pre-existing helminth infections may interfere with the efficient immune response to Plasmodium. To study the interaction between helminths and Plasmodium, we established a murine model of co-infection using the gastrointestinal nematode Strongyloides ratti and Plasmodium yoelii. We show th

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of interleukin 12 (IL-12) during Strongyloides venezuelensis infection. IL-12(-/-) and wild-type C57BL/6 mice were subcutaneously infected with 1500 larvae of S. venezuelensis. On days 7, 14, and 21 post-infection, we determined eosinophil and mononuclear cell numbers in the blood and broncoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), Th2 cytokine secretion in the lung parenchyma, and serum antibody levels. The numbers of eggs in the feces and worm parasites in the duodena were also quantified. The eosinophil and mononuclear cell counts and the concentrations

The anthelmintic effect of Khaya senegalensis is described. In vitro and in vivo studies were conducted to determine possible direct anthelmintic effects of ethanolic and aqueous extracts of K. senegalensis towards different ovine gastrointestinal nematode. A larval development assay was used to investigate in vitro, the effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts towards larvae of strongyles. The LC50 values of the effects of both the aqueous and ethanolic extracts were calculated. Another study was conducted in vivo to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of the extracts administered orally at a d

This survey examined the prevalence and intensity of Strongyloides fuelleborni kellyi and other intestinal helminths in children 5 years of age or under living near Kanabea, Papua New Guinea. Of 179 samples, 27% of the children tested positive for Strongyloides, with 81% of these children being a year or less in age. Overall, 68% of the children had one or more infections including Ascaris lumbricoides and hookworm (Necator americanus) as well as Strongyloides. Egg counts in the stools ranged from 100 to 98,300 eggs/ml for Strongyloides, 100 to 59,200 eggs/ml for Ascaris and 100 to 3400 eggs/m

The distribution of genetic differentiation in a population of the parasitic nematode Strongyloides ratti divided between rat hosts was determined. We applied population genetic theory to these data to determine the source of new infections. We estimate the rate at which a rat acquires a new infection from (a) the existing subpopulation of parasites within that rat ('self-reinfection') versus (b) the wider environment ('immigration'). We find that the observed levels of genetic diversity and differentiation in the study population are consistent with low to moderate rates of self-reinfection a

The involvement of granulocytes in the host early defense against the nematode, Strongyloides ratti, was studied. It was confirmed that granulocytes were effectively depleted for 4 days by anti-granulocyte monoclonal antibody (anti-Gr-1). To examine the involvement of granulocytes in the host defense against migrating larvae, 2,000 S. ratti infective larvae (L3) were inoculated subcutaneously 1 day after antibody treatment. The number of S. ratti eggs secreted in feces (EPG) was higher in the granulocyte-depleted group than in the control group. The number of migrating larvae also increased in

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 33-year-old woman from Laos was admitted due to recurrent vomiting and weight loss. Since one year, she was receiving immunosuppressive therapy (azathioprine 50 mg/d and methylprednisolone 18 mg/d) for a mixed connective tissue disease. Because of a drug induced Stevens-Johnson-Syndrome one month earlier high doses of methylprednisolone (100 mg/d intravenously) had been administered. The patient's general condition was reduced. Examination elicited a mild pain in the middle abdomen on palpation but no resistance or tumour. The differential diagnosis included ob

Prevalence of intestinal helminthiasis: 970 stool specimens are examined in Doualare and 999 in Doursongo (Maroua) North Cameroon. In this sample eggs of T. saginata are seen in 14.0% of the specimens, eggs of A. lumbricoides in 5.1%, N. americanus in 5.8% and S. mansoni in 2.1%. Eggs of T. trichiura, S. stercoralis and H. nana are found in less than 2% of the specimens. Stool examinations are performed in Doursongo before and after treatment with mebendazole: 94.1% of the inhabitants with A. lumbricoides eggs in their stools are free of this parasite after treatment, with T. trichiura 83.3% a
