The breathing bear: an intervention for crying babies and their mothers.

The Breathing Bear, an optional source of rhythmic stimulation for infants, was investigated for its effects on full-term infants and their mothers. The Bear "breathes" like a normal infant at a rate matching the infant's. Previous studies have indicated that premature infants prefer a Breathing Bear over a Non-Breathing Bear, and they show neurobehavioral benefits from the exposure. A Breathing Bear was provided for 35 full-term infants, and a Non-Breathing Bear was provided for 37 infants from 5 weeks to 6 months postnatal age, all of whom were considered by their mothers to be fussy. Sexuality and reproduction in bulimia nervosa patients over 10 years.

The reproductive and sexual histories of women who had recovered or were recovering from bulimia nervosa were examined. Of 48 consecutive female patients, 43 were studied 10-15 years after first presenting for treatment. At follow-up, 74% were considered recovered and 26% still had an eating disorder. Only 2 women fulfilled the criteria for bulimia nervosa. A history of amenorrhea was common (81% of women), 63% of women being without their menstrual periods for more than 12 months. Menstruation was present in women at a body mass index of 19 or more who were no longer using the weight loss pra

Neuroprogression and Immune Activation in Major Depressive Disorder.

Traditionally, the neurobiology of major depressive disorder (MDD) has been largely considered from the perspective of the state of major depressive episodes (MDE) versus being in remission, but the current accumulation of disease markers, largely acquired cross-sectionally, is strongly suggestive of neuroprogressive aspects of MDD. This chapter focuses on the changes in disease markers involved in the reorganization of the nervous system in MDD, including the translocator protein (TSPO; an index of microglial activation), glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP; an index of astroglial activatio

Prenatal Stress and Psychiatric Symptoms During Early Phases of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Italy.

PURPOSE: In February 2020, Italy became the first European country to face the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. The concerns of infection, financial worries, loss of freedom, and isolation during the ongoing pandemic can lead to negative psychological effects, including anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The main aim of our study was to evaluate the relationship between pandemic-related stress and pregnancy-specific stress and assess their role in the development of psychiatric symptoms. We predicted that pregnancy-specific stress would mediate an association

Pregnancy and COVID-19: pharmacologic considerations.

In this review, we summarize evidence regarding the use of routine and investigational pharmacologic interventions for pregnant and lactating patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Antenatal corticosteroids may be used routinely for fetal lung maturation between 24 and 34 weeks' gestation, but decisions in those with critical illness and those < 24 or > 34 weeks' gestation should be made on a case-by-case basis. Magnesium sulfate may be used for seizure prophylaxis and fetal neuroprotection, albeit cautiously in those with hypoxia and renal compromise. There are no contraindication

Perinatal mental health screening and care among those with pregnancy complications.

Perinatal mental health conditions are common and, without effective treatment, can contribute to adverse maternal and child outcomes. In the United States, mental health conditions are a leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality, contributing to over 20% of pregnancy-related deaths. This expert review aims to assess current literature and provide recommendations regarding mental health care in high-risk patients who experience pregnancy complications. Individuals experiencing pregnancy complications are at increased risk for perinatal mental health conditions, including depression, an

Effects of Maternal Heartbeat Exposure on Neonatal Autonomic Regulation.

BACKGROUND: During intrauterine life, the fetus is continuously exposed to rhythmic sensory stimuli; among these, the maternal heartbeat is one of the earliest and most biologically salient, contributing to the early organization of physiological regulation. This exploratory longitudinal observational study examined whether exposure to the maternal heartbeat influences neonatal autonomic activity and whether this response is moderated by prenatal maternal psychological distress. METHODS: Sixteen dyads of mother-child were included in the analyses. Pregnant women were first assessed between 24

Sex-Specific Outcomes in a Rat Model of Early-Life Stress Due to Adverse Caregiving.

Early parental care is critical for the development of cortico-limbic circuits regulating stress responses and emotional well-being. Conversely, infant maltreatment can increase susceptibility to mood disorders-such as anxiety and depression-and impair stress-coping abilities. Here, we employed the Scarcity-Adversity Model (SAM) in rats, limiting nesting resources from postnatal days 8-12, to examine its effects on maternal and adult offspring behavior. SAM-exposed mothers exhibited fragmented care and increased violence towards pups. By postpartum day (PPD) 13, maternal fecal corticosterone m
