[Growth hormone therapy in STH deficiency with immunologic deficiency and chromosome fragility].

A 8 year old boy with short stature, low height velocity, mental retardation, cutaneous abnormalities, common variable immunodeficiency and increased chromosomal instability is described. In this patient growth hormone deficiency could be demonstrated by several stimulation tests. Growth hormone treatment increased growth rate from 4 cm/year before therapy to 7.8 cm in the first and 7.1 cm in the second year of treatment. Under therapy no effect on the immunological reactivity could be observed.

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia in Finland: epidemiological and genetic aspects of 107 patients.

Cartilage-hair hypoplasia (CHH) is an autosomal recessive form of metaphyseal chondrodysplasia characterised by short limbed short stature, hypoplastic hair growth, and impaired cell mediated immunity and erythrocyte production. The syndrome is exceptionally prevalent among the Finns and among the Old Order Amish in the United States; sporadic cases have been reported from other countries. An epidemiological and genetic study of CHH in Finland showed 107 patients, 46 males and 61 females, in 85 families. Eighteen of them had died, seven before the age of 1 year. The living patients ranged in a

High frequency of empty sella syndrome in children with growth hormone deficiency.

Computer-assisted tomography (CT) with 2 mm axial sections and reconstructions was carried out in 31 children affected by GH deficiency (GHD): 18 with idiopathic complete isolated GHD, 3 with idiopathic partial isolated GHD, 2 with idiopathic panhypopituitarism, 4 with isolated acquired GHD and 4 with acquired panhypopituitarism. Density in the intrasellar area on CT corresponded to that of cerebrospinal fluid in 13/20 cases with idiopathic hypopituitarism and in 2/8 cases with acquired hypopituitarism. The overall incidence of primary empty sella syndrome (PESS) in the GH deficient patients s

Teratological hip dislocation.

The hallmark of teratological congenital hip dislocation is its advanced severity at birth, signifying longer antenatal duration and accentuation of distortion. There may be contributions from a multiplicity of unrelated syndromes, such as local intrauterine factors, failure of proper formations early in the embryonic period, or genetically determined disorders. Treatment is generally difficult and the end result is uncertain.

IQ measurement in children with skeletal dysplasia.

We have reviewed the IQ studies on 68 children with skeletal dysplasia. These data should provide useful information for the counseling of parents with newborn affected children. Previous studies have documented retardation and hydrocephalus in association with achondroplasia. Some parents report that they were given a poor prognosis for their child's mental development early in his or her life. This study shows that the 34 children with achondroplasia and 34 with other skeletal dysplasia performed intellectually in the same range as other children.

Upper extremity deformities associated with the orofacial clefts.

A material of 89 cases of upper extremity deformities, among the 3225 cleft patients born during the period 1950-75, and treated in the Finnish Red Cross Cleft Centre is presented. About two-thirds of the patients had an isolated cleft palate--half of the male and nearly all of the female patients. The percentage of upper extremity deformities appearing with the different types of the orofacial clefts was, for clefts of the primary palate 2.0: specifically for cleft lip 0.8, cleft lip--palate 2.6, and cleft lip and palate 3.6; and for clefts of the secondary palate 3.5: specifically for cleft

Suprahypophyseal dysfunction in a patient with asexual ateleiosis.

The neuroendocrine function of a 19 years old female dwarf with primary amenorrhoea and lack of sexual development (asexual ateleiosis) was studied. Undetectable fasting plasma levels of growth hormone (GH) and a lack of response to three different provocative stimuli was observed. Oestrogen administratin did not modify the GH response. Thyroid and adrenal function were within normal limits. Undetectable plasma levels of immunoreactive oestradiol and lack of oestrogenic activity in vaginal smears indicated absence of ovarian function. Low levels of circulating gonadotrophins with a significant

[Proceedings: The clinical effects of human growth hormone. Report on an international symposium of the German Kabi Corp. on February 15, 1975 in Munich].

Report of an International Symposion (Febr. 15, 1975, Munich). Human growth hormone (HGH) acts on proliferation of cartilage, the basal process of growth, by the way of somatomedine and changes in protein metabolism. Growth can be enhanced in hypopituitary dwardism and with higher dosage in other forms of failure to thrive. HGH also seems to have a beneficial effect in patients with muscular dystrophy as shown in a preliminary report but not in thrombocytopenia. First observations on patients with osteogenesis imperfecta and on patients with non healing fractures of the long bones (pseudarthro

Different types of osteochondrodysplasia in a consecutive series of newborns.

Among 14816 consecutive live births there were 7 cases of osteochondrodysplasia (incidence 1:2117). In addition there was 1 case of stippled epiphyses, possibly induced by anticonvulsive drugs taken by the mother during the pregnancy, and one case of cerebro-hepato-renal syndrome of Zellweger with roentgenological features similar to those of hypochondrodysplasia. None of 102 stillborns seen at the same time had osteochondrodysplasia. For genetic counselling an exact diagnosis is mandatory, radiological examination of the skeleton is often of decisive importance.
