Marijuana's effects on human cognitive functions, psychomotor functions, and personality.

Marijuana is complex chemically and not yet fully understood, but it is not a narcotic. Like alcohol, marijuana acts as both stimulant and depressant, but it lingers in body organs longer than alcohol. Smoking marijuana can injure mucosal tissue and may have more carcinogenic potential than tobacco. Research has indicated that marijuana intoxication definitely hinders attention, long-term memory storage, and psychomotor skills involved in driving a car or flying a plane. Expectations and past experience with marijuana have often influenced results more than pharmacological aspects have. Mariju

Persistence of "past-life" memories in adults who, in their childhood, claimed memories of a past life.

This article tests the consistency and the continuation of alleged "past-life" memories from childhood into adulthood and the possible detrimental effects of such childhood memories on the development into adult life. Twenty-eight adults aged 28 to 56 years who had claimed to have memories of a past life when they were children were interviewed in Lebanon. Their memories had been recorded when they were children, at the mean age of 6 years. Of the 28 participants, 24 still reported some past-life memories, whereas 4 had forgotten everything. Twenty-one were sure that their memories were a cont

Memory Interventions in the Criminal Justice System: Some Practical Ethical Considerations.

In recent years, discussion around memory modification interventions has gained attention. However, discussion around the use of memory interventions in the criminal justice system has been mostly absent. In this paper we start by highlighting the importance memory has for human well-being and personal identity, as well as its role within the criminal forensic setting; in particular, for claiming and accepting legal responsibility, for moral learning, and for retribution. We provide examples of memory interventions that are currently available for medical purposes, but that in the future could

Preclinical Alzheimer's disease and its outcome: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: New research criteria for preclinical Alzheimer's disease have been proposed, which include stages for cognitively normal individuals with abnormal amyloid markers (stage 1), abnormal amyloid and neuronal injury markers (stage 2), or abnormal amyloid and neuronal injury markers and subtle cognitive changes (stage 3). We aimed to investigate the prevalence and long-term outcome of preclinical Alzheimer's disease according to these criteria. METHODS: Participants were cognitively normal (clinical dementia rating [CDR]=0) community-dwelling volunteers aged at least 65 years who were

Adolescents' experiences with uxoricide.

The purpose of this study was to describe the experiences of individuals who survived the loss of one or both parents through parental homicide or homicide/suicide as adolescents. Participants (N = 34) were aged between 12 and 19 years at the time of the death and were aged between 29 and 64 years at the time of the interview. Participants were interviewed twice and asked to tell the story of their lives. Data were analyzed in the hermeneutic phenomenological tradition using a stepwise process of developing categories and then a single complex theme. Common categories of participants' childhoo

Freezing of Gait in Parkinson's Disease: A Scoping Review on the Path Towards Real-Time Therapies.

BACKGROUND: Freezing of gait (FoG) is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease, especially in its later stages of progression. Characterized by involuntary stopping during normal gait patterns, FoG greatly increases fall risk, reducing quality of life. Given the complex presentation and etiology of FoG, current treatments have proven ineffective in managing episodes. In recent years, machine learning algorithms have been leveraged to derive actionable clinical insights from biomedical datasets. As a manifestation of neuromechanical dysfunction, impending FoG episodes may be characterized throug

Evaluating Machine Learning-Based Soft Sensors for Effluent Quality Prediction in Wastewater Treatment Under Variable Weather Conditions.

Maintaining effluent quality in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) comes with significant challenges under variable weather conditions, where sudden changes in flow rate and increased pollutant loads can affect treatment performance. Traditional physical sensors became both expensive and susceptible to failure under extreme conditions. In this study, we evaluate the performance of soft sensors based on artificial intelligence (AI) to predict the components underlying the calculation of the effluent quality index (EQI). We thus focus our study on three ML models: Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM),

Abnormal Global Cortical Responses in Drug-Naïve Patients With Schizophrenia Following Orbitofrontal Cortex Stimulation: A Concurrent Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation-Electroencephalography Study.

BACKGROUND: Abnormalities in cortical excitability and plasticity have been considered to underlie the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Transcranial magnetic stimulation combined with electroencephalography (TMS-EEG) can provide a direct evaluation of cortical responses to TMS. Here, we employed TMS-EEG to investigate cortical responses to orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) stimulation in schizophrenia. METHODS: In total, we recruited 92 drug-naïve patients with first-episode schizophrenia and 51 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals. For each participant, one session of 1-Hz repetitive TMS (rTMS

Research and Diagnostic Algorithmic Rules (RADAR) and RADAR Plots for the First Episode of Major Depressive Disorder: Effects of Childhood and Recent Adverse Experiences on Suicidal Behaviors, Neurocognition and Phenome Features.

Recent studies have proposed valid precision models and valid Research and Diagnostic Algorithmic Rules (RADAR) for recurrent major depressive disorder (MDD). The aim of the current study was to construct precision models and RADAR scores in patients experiencing first-episode MDD and to examine whether adverse childhood experiences (ACE) and negative life events (NLE) are associated with suicidal behaviors (SB), cognitive impairment, and phenome RADAR scores. This study recruited 90 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) in an acute phase, of whom 71 showed a first-episode MDD (FEM), a

Case report: 10 years follow-up of psychosis due to Fahr's disease complicated by a left temporal stroke.

Fahr's disease (FD) is a rare disorder, characterized by basal ganglia calcification and presenting with movement disorders, speech impairment, cognitive deficits, and neuropsychiatric symptoms. Psychotic disorders related to FD are barely described in the literature, and knowledge is missing concerning pathophysiology, course, and management. Here, we report on the long-term follow-up of a patient who had three acute episodes of FD-psychosis characterized by bizarre delusions and behavioral disorganization, without hallucinations. Genetic and metabolic causes of FD were ruled out. In all thre

Internal clock variability, mood swings and working memory in bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Distortions in time processing may be regarded as an endophenotypic marker of neuropsychiatric diseases; however, investigations addressing Bipolar Disorder (BD) are still scarce. METHODS: The present study compared timing abilities in 30 BD patients and 30 healthy controls (HC), and explored the relationship between time processing and affective-cognitive symptoms in BD, with the aim to determine whether timing difficulties are primary in bipolar patients or due to comorbid cognitive impairment. Four tasks measuring external timing were administered: a temporal and spatial orient

Early and late stages of visual processing in individuals in prodromal state and first episode schizophrenia: an ERP study.

BACKGROUND: P300 deficits in schizophrenia patients are well established, especially in the auditory modality. Several studies have also reported P300 abnormalities in schizophrenia in visual tasks, but these findings are inconsistent. Furthermore, reports on P300 in visual modality in prodromal subjects are very limited. While P300 indexes relatively late and complex cognitive functions such as context updating in working memory, sensory-evoked components such as the P1/N1 primarily index early stages of perceptual processing. Several previous studies suggest that P300 reduction in schizophre

Acute, relapsing brain oedema with diffuse blood-brain barrier alteration and axonal damage in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

A 38-year-old homosexual male with AIDS suffered four neurological episodes including headaches, confusion, visual impairment, memory disturbances, and dysarthria which resolved spontaneously in a few days. He was admitted to hospital during a fifth episode. Neurological examination revealed a cerebellar syndrome. General examination was normal. CD4 count was 90. CSF contained two WBCs/mm(3) and 12.30 mg/dL protein. MRI revealed diffuse ill defined increased signal on T2-weighted images in the white matter. His condition worsened rapidly with vomiting and he died 1 month after admission. Neuro

Arrhythmias after SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination in Patients with a Cardiac Implantable Electronic Device: A Multicenter Study.

One of the most concerning adverse events related to the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination is arrhythmia. To ascertain the relationship between vaccination and arrhythmic events, we studied the occurrence of arrhythmia in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) before and after a SARS-CoV-2 vaccination. Patients with CIEDs aged ≥18 who visited the CIED clinic at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and Vajira hospital from August 2021 to February 2022 were included. Information about the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and side effects was obtained. One hundred eighty patients were included i

Novel Predictor for New-Onset Atrial High-Rate Episode in Patients With a Dual-Chamber Pacemaker.

Background: The incidence of new-onset atrial high-rate episode (AHRE) is higher among patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) than in the general population. We sought to elucidate the clinical factors associated with AHRE in CIED patients, including P-wave dispersion (PWD) in sinus rhythm. Methods and Results: In all, 101 patients with CIEDs newly implanted between 2010 and 2014 were included in the study. PWD was measured at the time of device implantation via a body-surface electrocardiogram. AHRE was defined as any episode of sustained atrial tachyarrhythmia (>170 bea

Transient Global Amnesia (TGA): Younger Age and Absence of Cerebral Microangiopathy Are Potentially Predisposing Factors for TGA Recurrence.

Background: Transient global amnesia (TGA) is defined by an acute memory disturbance of unclear etiology for a period of less than 24 h. TGA occurs as a single event in most cases. Prevalence rates of recurrent TGA vary widely from 5.4 to 27.1%. This retrospective study aimed to determine predictors for TGA recurrence. Methods: Cardiovascular risk profile and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of 340 hospitalized TGA patients between 2011 and 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The median follow-up period amounted to 4.5 ± 2.7 years. Comparisons were made between TGA patients with and without su

The Day That Went Missing: A First-Person Account of Transient Global Amnesia.

In this vivid first-person case history, political reporter Trip Gabriel describes experiencing a classic episode of transient global amnesia. He was near the average target age of 61. Although no cause has been established for the syndrome, as with many other patients his episode appears to have been triggered by contact with water: He was racing a sailboat. While remaining alert and handling complex sailing maneuvers, he suddenly developed amnesia that left him with no recollection of finishing two races, returning to shore, drinking a beer with his friends, needing help finding his car, and

Parkinson's disease showing progressive conduction aphasia.

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) may develop progressive dementia late in their clinical course. Dementia in PD is mostly related to neuropathological findings of extensive Lewy bodies (LBs), with or without the coexistence of Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. Aphasia has been reported in patients with LB diseases with AD pathology; however, there have been no reports of typical PD patients developing progressive aphasia during their clinical course. We describe a female PD patient who later developed progressive conduction aphasia characterized by phonemic paraphasia and disturbance i
