Clinical applications of artificial intelligence in sleep medicine: a sleep clinician's perspective.

BACKGROUND: The past few years have seen a rapid emergence of artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled technology in the field of sleep medicine. AI refers to the capability of computer systems to perform tasks conventionally considered to require human intelligence, such as speech recognition, decision-making, and visual recognition of patterns and objects. The practice of sleep tracking and measuring physiological signals in sleep is widely practiced. Therefore, sleep monitoring in both the laboratory and ambulatory environments results in the accrual of massive amounts of data that uniquely pos

Mnemonic Demand Reconfigures the Neural Architecture of Memory Encoding.

Memory encoding must accommodate increasingly demanding loads, yet it remains unclear whether the underlying brain state is preserved or adaptively reconfigured as load increases. Here, we recorded EEG from 111 participants performing a visual memory task in which they encoded lists of real images ranging from 1 to 128 items, spanning low to high mnemonic demands, followed by a recognition test. We measured the similarity of set-size-specific interelectrode correlation patterns to a low-load reference. Similarity decreased monotonically as list length increased: patterns at set sizes below 4 r

Optic chiasmal neuritis: clinical features, aetiologies, MRI patterns and prognosis in a real-world cohort.

BACKGROUND: Optic chiasmal neuritis (OCN) is considered atypical for multiple sclerosis (MS) and more frequently associated with neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). Yet the true aetiological spectrum of OCN in the antibody era remains poorly defined. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective single-centre study of consecutive patients with MRI-confirmed chiasmal enhancement between 2017 and 2025. Non-inflammatory, non-demyelinating aetiologies and previous optic neuritis were excluded. Clinical features, ophthalmological outcomes, MRI findings, and aetiologies were analysed. RESULTS

An Interpretable Chest X-ray Classification Framework Using Prototype Memory and Counterfactual Consistency.

Chest X-ray (CXR) interpretation requires recognition of subtle and heterogenous radiographic patterns, yet conventional deep learning models often rely on spurious image cues that lack anatomical or pathological relevance. This study presents CXR-NeXus, an interpretable chest X-ray classification framework designed to promote explicit visual reasoning and reliable decision behavior under weak supervision. The proposed method integrates prototype memory with counterfactual consistency to constrain model predictions to clinically meaningful pulmonary evidence. CXR-NeXus learns multiple class-sp

Relative sparing of primary auditory cortex in Williams Syndrome.

Williams Syndrome (WS) is a neurodevelopment disorder associated with a hemizygous deletion on chromosome 7. WS is characterized with mental retardation, severe visual-spatial deficits, relative language preservation, and excellent facial recognition. Distinctive auditory features include musical ability, heightened sound sensitivity, and specific patterns of auditory evoked potentials. These features have led to the hypothesis that the dorsal forebrain is more affected than the ventral. Previously, we reported primary visual area 17 abnormalities in rostral striate cortex, a region contributi

DANCE: Deep Learning-Assisted Analysis of ProteiN Sequences Using Chaos Enhanced Kaleidoscopic Images.

Cancer is a complex disease characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and requires an accurate classification for effective treatment. T cell receptors (TCRs), crucial proteins in the immune system, play a pivotal role in antigen recognition. Advancements in sequencing technologies have facilitated the comprehensive profiling of TCR repertoires, uncovering TCRs with potent anticancer activity and enabling TCR-based immunotherapies. Performing an effective analysis of these complex biomolecules requires representations that accurately capture both their structural and functional characteristics

Regional and Sex-Specific Alterations in the Visual Cortex of Individuals With Psychosis Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Impairments of the visual system are implicated in psychotic disorders. However, studies exploring visual cortex (VC) morphology in this population are limited. Using data from the Bipolar-Schizophrenia Network on Intermediate Phenotypes consortium, we examined VC structure in psychosis probands and their first-degree relatives (RELs), sex differences in VC measures, and their relationships with cognitive and peripheral inflammatory markers. METHODS: Cortical thickness, surface area, and volume of the primary (Brodmann area 17/V1) and secondary (Brodmann area 18/V2) visual areas a

Artificial intelligence and radiomics in drug-induced interstitial lung disease.

BACKGROUND: Drug-induced interstitial lung disease (DI-ILD) encompasses a heterogeneous spectrum of potentially severe pulmonary toxicities associated with various pharmacological agents. Diagnosis is often delayed due to nonspecific symptoms and imaging findings that can mimic other ILDs or infections, particularly in patients receiving oncological or immunomodulatory therapies. Novel approaches are needed to improve early recognition and management. METHODS: We conducted a non-systematic, narrative literature review across major biomedical databases up to June 2025, aimed at describing curr

Neurons with complex visual properties in the superior colliculus of the macaque monkey.

Single neurons were recorded from the superficial layers of the superior colliculus of immobilized monkeys (Macaca mulatta and Macaca irus). Two main functional types of neurons were found. The neurons of the first type (Type I neurons) responded well to simple stationary and moving stimuli such as spots, bars or slits of light. The latency of their response was 41 +/- 6 ms. They were not directionally selective and responded to a large range of velocities. The neurons of the second type (Type II neurons) responded very poorly to simple visual stimuli and their activation required real objects

The middle hepatic artery: prevalence and origin patterns of a distinct segment 4 artery.

BACKGROUND: The middle hepatic artery (MHA) is commonly used to describe the artery supplying segment 4 of the liver. Because preservation of segment 4 inflow is important in hepatobiliary surgery, especially in living donor liver transplantation and split liver transplantation, recognition of its presence and origin is clinically relevant. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and origin patterns of the MHA. METHODS: A total of 706 abdominal computed tomography angiography examinations were retrospectively reviewed. In this study, the MHA was defined as a separately identifiable arteri

Children develop adult-like visual sensitivity to image memorability by the age of 4.

Adults have been shown to consistently remember and forget certain images despite large individual differences, suggesting a population-wide sensitivity to an image's intrinsic memorability-a measure of how successfully an image is remembered. While a decade of research has focused on image memorability among adults, the developmental trajectory of these consistencies in memory is understudied. Here, we investigate by what age children gain adult-like sensitivity to the image memorability effect. We utilized data from Saragosa-Harris et al. (2021), where 137 children aged between 3 and 5 years

Convolutional Neural Network Based Real Time Arabic Speech Recognition to Arabic Braille for Hearing and Visually Impaired.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a group of theoretically inspired computer structures for analyzing and modeling clearly going on texts at one or extra degrees of linguistic evaluation to acquire human-like language processing for quite a few activities and applications. Hearing and visually impaired people are unable to see entirely or have very low vision, as well as being unable to hear completely or having a hard time hearing. It is difficult to get information since both hearing and vision, which are crucial organs for receiving information, are harmed. Hearing and visually impaired

Encoding of rapid time-varying information is impaired in poor readers.

A characteristic set of eye movements and fixations are made during reading, so the position of words on the retinae is constantly being updated. Effective decoding of print requires this temporal stream of visual information to be segmented or parsed into its constituent units (e.g., letters or words). Poor readers' difficulties with word recognition could arise at the point of segmenting time-varying visual information, but the mechanisms underlying this process are little understood. Here, we used random-dot displays to explore the effects of reading ability on temporal segmentation. Thirty

Parallel feedback pathways in visual cortex of cats revealed through a modified rabies virus.

The visual cortex of cats is highly evolved. Analogously to the brains of primates, large numbers of visual areas are arranged hierarchically and can be parsed into separate dorsal and ventral streams for object recognition and visuospatial representation. Within early primate visual areas, V1 and V2, and to a lesser extent V3, the two streams are relatively segregated and relayed in parallel to higher order cortex, although there is some evidence suggesting an alignment of V2 and V3 to one stream over the other. For cats, there is no evidence of anatomical segregation in areas 18 and 19, the

Automated differential diagnosis of dementia syndromes using FDG PET and machine learning.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic brain imaging with 2-[18F]fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG PET) is a supportive diagnostic and differential diagnostic tool for neurodegenerative dementias. In the clinic, scans are usually visually interpreted. However, computer-aided approaches can improve diagnostic accuracy. We aimed to build two machine learning classifiers, based on two sets of FDG PET-derived features, for differential diagnosis of common dementia syndromes. METHODS: We analyzed FDG PET scans from three dementia cohorts [63 dementia due to Alzheimer's disease (AD), 79 dem

"What?" and "where?" versus "what is where?": the impact of task on coding of object form and position in the lateral occipital complex.

Fast and accurate recognition of both the identities and positions of objects in visual space is critical to deciphering visual environments. Studies in both humans and nonhuman primates have demonstrated that neural populations in ventral temporal visual areas are jointly tuned to both the form and position of objects, allowing information about the identities of objects to be "tagged" with their positions. Because not all behaviors demand that the identities of objects be associated with position information with equal precision, however, the present study asked whether the spatial tuning of

A mosquito bites and a butterfly flies: A specific response type of frontal patients in a similarity task.

BACKGROUND: Patients with neurodegenerative diseases affecting the frontal lobes have difficulties in categorization tasks, such as the similarity tasks. They give two types of unusual response to the question: "In what way are an orange and a banana alike?", either a differentiation ("one is yellow, the other is orange") or a concrete similarity ("they are sweet"). OBJECTIVE: To characterize the categorization deficit of frontal patients and develop a short diagnostic tool to assess the nature of these difficulties. METHOD: We analyzed the responses provided by frontal and non-frontal neuro
