Auditory and Visual Response Inhibition in Children with Bilateral Hearing Aids and Children with ADHD.

Children fitted with hearing aids (HAs) and children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often have marked difficulties concentrating in noisy environments. However, little is known about the underlying neural mechanism of auditory and visual attention deficits in a direct comparison of both groups. The current functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study was the first to investigate the behavioral performance and neural activation during an auditory and a visual go/nogo paradigm in children fitted with bilateral HAs, children with ADHD and typically developing children

Significant decrease in lipid core burden index following balloon dilation was associated with the leakage of cholesterol crystals in a patient: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used for analysis the composition of the atherosclerotic plaque in coronary arteries. However, meaning of significant decrease in max lipid core burden index at 4 mm (max LCBI4mm) during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is poorly understood. CASE SUMMARY: A 64-year-old male with unstable angina underwent coronary angiography, which demonstrated a hazy tight culprit lesion in the mid-right coronary artery. Pre-intervention NIRS-intravascular ultrasound (NIRS-IVUS) and chemogram showed plaque with high lipid burden at the culprit le

The Fate of SWCNTs in Mouse Peritoneal Macrophages: Exocytosis, Biodegradation, and Sustainable Retention.

The understanding of toxicological and pharmacological profiles of nanomaterials is an important step for the development and clinical application of nanomedicines. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been extensively explored as a nanomedicine agent in pharmaceutical/biomedical applications, such as drug delivery, bioimaging, and tissue engineering. The biological durability of CNTs could affect the function of CNTs-based nanomedicines as well as their toxicity in cells and tissues. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the fate of nanomedicine in phagocytes. Herein, we investigated the candidate fate

Synthesis of a new thiophenol-thiophene polymer for the removal of mercury from wastewater and liquid hydrocarbons.

This work reports the synthesis of a novel thiophenol-thiophene polymer (termed KFUPM-Hg) and its suitability as an adsorbent for mercury removal from wastewater and liquid hydrocarbons. KFUPM-Hg was synthesized through a Friedel-Crafts polycondensation reaction of thiophenol and thiophene in the presence of p-formaldehyde as a linker. The crosslinked polymer structure was characterized using solid-state 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to assess the polymer thermal stability, which indicated that

Comparison of Frequency- and Time-Domain Autoregulation and Vasoreactivity Indices in a Piglet Model of Hypoxia-Ischemia and Hypothermia.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal method to detect impairments in cerebrovascular pressure autoregulation in neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is unclear. Improving autoregulation monitoring methods would significantly advance neonatal neurocritical care. METHODS: We tested several mathematical algorithms from the frequency and time domains in a piglet model of HIE, hypothermia, and hypotension. We used laser Doppler flowmetry and induced hypotension to delineate the gold standard lower limit of autoregulation (LLA). Receiver operating characteristics curve analyses were used to det

Speech Recognition via fNIRS Based Brain Signals.

In this paper, we present the first evidence that perceived speech can be identified from the listeners' brain signals measured via functional-near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS)-a non-invasive, portable, and wearable neuroimaging technique suitable for ecologically valid settings. In this study, participants listened audio clips containing English stories while prefrontal and parietal cortices were monitored with fNIRS. Machine learning was applied to train predictive models using fNIRS data from a subject pool to predict which part of a story was listened by a new subject not in the pool base

Hyperspectral imaging of tissue perfusion and oxygenation in wounds: assessing the impact of a micro capillary dressing.

OBJECTIVE: Experimental tests of non-invasive multi- or hyperspectral imaging (HSI) systems reveal the high potential of support for medical diagnostic purposes and scientific biomedical analysis. Until now the use of HSI technologies for medical applications was limited by complex and overly sophisticated systems. We present a new and compact HSI-camera that could be used in normal clinical practice. METHOD: We assessed the use of the HSI system on the hands of 10 healthy volunteers, looking at control parameters, and those following venous occlusion, arterial occlusion and reperfusion, incl

Hand Passive Mobilization Performed with Robotic Assistance: Acute Effects on Upper Limb Perfusion and Spasticity in Stroke Survivors.

This single arm pre-post study aimed at evaluating the acute effects induced by a single session of robot-assisted passive hand mobilization on local perfusion and upper limb (UL) function in poststroke hemiparetic participants. Twenty-three patients with subacute or chronic stroke received 20 min passive mobilization of the paretic hand with robotic assistance. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to detect changes in forearm tissue perfusion. Muscle tone of the paretic UL was assessed by the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS). Symptoms concerning UL heaviness, joint stiffness, and pain were

Lower limb ischemia caused by resuscitative balloon occlusion of aorta.

BACKGROUND: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is an emergency procedure to manage severe hemorrhagic shock from torso injury but can cause severe ischemia of the lower extremities. However, lower extremity ischemia occurring as a complication of REBOA has been rarely reported. We describe the severe lower extremity ischemia caused by REBOA with a 12-Fr sheath in a small-built patient. CASE REPRESENTATION: The patient was a 16-year-old male who developed severe hemorrhagic shock due to abdominal blunt trauma. Following REBOA with a 12-Fr sheath on the right femo

1,6- and 1,7-Regioisomers of Highly Soluble Amino-Substituted Perylene Tetracarboxylic Dianhydrides: Synthesis, Optical and Electrochemical Properties.

1,6- and 1,7-regioisomers of diamino-substituted perylene tetracarboxylic dianhydrides (PTCDs) with different n-alkyl chain lengths (n = 6, 12 or 18) were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrometry. These dyes are highly soluble in most organic solvents and even in nonpolar solvents, such as hexane. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time the 1,6-diamino-substituted PTCDs (2a-2c) have been obtained in pure form. The regioisomers 1a-1c (1,7-) and 2a-2c (1,6-) exhibit significant differences in their optical characteristics. In addition t

Management of Shock in Neonates.

Shock is characterized by inadequate oxygen delivery to the tissues, and is more frequent in very low birth weight infants, especially in the first few days of life. Shock is an independent predictor of mortality, and the survivors are at a higher risk of neurologic impairment. Understanding the pathophysiology helps to recognize and classify shock in the early compensated phase and initiate appropriate treatment. Hypovolemia is rarely the primary cause of shock in neonates. Myocardial dysfunction is especially common in extremely preterm infants, and in term infants with perinatal asphyxia. B

Characterization of Ca-phosphate biological materials by scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) at the Ca L2,3-, P L2,3- and C K-edges.

Several naturally occurring biological materials, including bones and teeth, pathological calcifications, microbial mineral deposits formed in marine phosphogenesis areas, as well as bio-inspired cements used for bone and tooth repair are composed of Ca-phosphates. These materials are usually identified and characterized using bulk-scale analytical tools such as X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy or nuclear magnetic resonance. However, there is a need for imaging techniques that provide information on the spatial distribution and chemical composition of the Ca-phosphate

Methods of monitoring brain oxygenation.

INTRODUCTION: Posttraumatic brain ischemia or hypoxia is a major potential cause of secondary injury that may lead to poor outcome. Avoidance, or amelioration, of this secondary injury depends on early diagnosis and intervention before permanent injury occurs. However, tools to monitor brain oxygenation continuously in the neuro-intensive care unit have been lacking. DISCUSSION: In recent times, methods of monitoring aspects of brain oxygenation continuously by the bedside have been evaluated in several experimental and clinical series and are potentially changing the way we manage head-injur

Brain-computer interface in paralysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Communication with patients suffering from locked-in syndrome and other forms of paralysis is an unsolved challenge. Movement restoration for patients with chronic stroke or other brain damage also remains a therapeutic problem and available treatments do not offer significant improvements. This review considers recent research in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) as promising solutions to these challenges. RECENT FINDINGS: Experimentation with nonhuman primates suggests that intentional goal directed movements of the upper limbs can be reconstructed and transmitted to exter

Intermittent hypoxia reduces cerebrovascular sensitivity to isocapnic hypoxia in humans.

The purpose of this study was to determine the changes in human cerebrovascular function associated with intermittent poikilocapnic hypoxia (IH). Healthy men (n=8; 24+/-1 years) were exposed to IH for 10 days (12% O(2) for 5min followed by 5min of normoxia for 1h). During the hypoxic exposures, oxyhemoglobin saturation (SaO(2)) was 85% and the end-tidal partial pressure of CO(2) was permitted to fall as a result of hypoxic hyperventilation. Pre- and post-IH intervention subjects underwent a progressive isocapnic hypoxic test where ventilation, blood pressure, heart rate, and cerebral blood flo

Perioperative multimodality neuromonitoring: an overview.

Neurologic damage after cardiac surgery remains an important cause of postoperative morbidity. In addition to a wide variety of procedural risks, patient-specific factors such as the presence of extracranial or intracranial atherosclerotic disease, either alone or together, have a fundamental impact on the risk of brain injury developing after cardiovascular surgery. A variety of neurophysiologic monitoring techniques have been used during cardiovascular surgery in hopes of averting neurologic injury. In this issue of Seminars, the strengths and weaknesses of each are discussed by a group of h

Co(II) derivatives of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase with the cobalt bound in the place of copper. A new spectroscopic tool for the study of the active site.

Co(II) derivatives of Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase having cobalt substituted for the copper (Co,Zn-superoxide dismutase and Co,Co-superoxide dismutase) were studied by optical and EPR spectroscopy. EPR and electronic absorption spectra of Co,Zn-superoxide dismutase are sensitive to solvent perturbation, and in particular to the presence of phosphate. This behaviour suggests that cobalt in Co,Zn-superoxide dismutase is open to solvent access, at variance with the Co(II) of the Cu,Co-superoxide dismutase, which is substituted for the Zn. Phosphate binding as monitored by optical titration is depen

Cerebral Hemodynamic and Metabolic Responses to Anesthesia and Vasopressors in Adult Shoulder Surgery: A 2 × 2 Factorial Design Randomized Controlled Trial with Light-based Neuromonitoring (CHEM-FACT Study).

BACKGROUND: Ephedrine has been suggested to improve cerebral microcirculation and perfusion compared with phenylephrine. However, prospective intraoperative data are lacking, and possible interactions with anesthetic choice remain untested. METHODS: Forty adults undergoing shoulder surgery in the beach chair position were recruited between February and November 2024 at St. Joseph's Hospital (London, Canada). Patients were randomized in a 2 × 2 factorial design to anesthetic maintenance (propofol vs . sevoflurane) and vasopressor strategy (phenylephrine infusion vs . ephedrine boluses). Relati

Morphological, Mineralogical, and Biochemical Characteristics of Particulate Matter in Three Size Fractions (PM10, PM2.5, and PM1) in the Urban Environment.

Air pollution in megacities is increasing due to the dense population index, increasing vehicles, industries, and burning activities that negatively impact human health and climate. There is limited study of air pollution in many megacities of the world including Pakistan. Lahore is a megacity in Pakistan in which the continuous investigation of particulate matter is very important. Therefore, this study investigates particulate matter in three size fractions (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) in Lahore, a polluted city in south Asia. The particulate matter was collected daily during the winter season of
