Actinomycosis of the nasal cavity.

INTRODUCTION: Actinomycosis of the nasal cavity is very rare. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical features, treatment methods, and treatment results of actinomycosis of the nasal cavity in our hospital. METHODS: We retrospectively enrolled 11 patients with histopathologically identified actinomycosis of the nasal cavity from January 2010 to May 2020. RESULTS: This study included five males and six females. The most common symptom was purulent nasal discharge (36.4%). Nasal actinomycosis occurred in the maxillary sinus in 5 (45.5%) patients, the ethmoid sinus

[Submucosal Partial-turbinectomy (SPT) Preceding an Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (ESS) Procedure].

Preceding a endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), we have proposed performing a submucosal partial-turbinectomy (SPT) which removes a part of the inferior nasal concha bone attached to maxillary sinus with an antrostomy. By this method, we could not only make a large antrostomy but also obtain good maneuverability by opening the middle nasal meatus in ESS. We performed SPT preceding ESS in 140 cases (261 sides) between January 2012 and June 2014. The stenosis rates of the middle nasal meatus were 14.2% (37 sides from 261 sides) in one month, 7.4% (18 sides from 243 sides) in three months and 3.7% (6

Limited form of Wegener's granulomatosis in a patient with Crohn's disease. A case report.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a multisystemic disease of unknown etiology characterized by necrotizing vasculitis and granulomatous inflammation. Although, the gastrointestinal tract can be involved in this vasculitis, the association between WG and Crohn's disease (CD) exists and was previously described. We report the case of a 29 year-old Tunisian white patient previously diagnosed with CD, presenting 3 years later with a perforated nasal septum, mucosal ulcers and sinusitis. He had also a skin ulcerative eruption of the trunk. There was no evidence of a flare of his CD. A computed tomog

Cavernous sinus thrombosis complicating sinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Septic cavernous sinus thrombosis is a rare complication of paranasal sinusitis. OBJECTIVE: To familiarize the clinician with the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and appropriate management of septic cavernous sinus thrombosis. DESIGN: Case report and literature review. SETTING: Pediatric intensive care unit in a university hospital. PATIENT: We present a 12-yr-old female with a 1 wk history of an upper respiratory tract infection with worsening dyspnea, cough, and swelling of the left eye progressing to adult respiratory distress syndrome. Secondary to the need for significant mechani

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis: a diagnostic and therapeutic problem. Clinical experience with eight haematologic patients.

Eight patients with haematologic malignancies contracted fatal invasive aspergillosis during an outbreak. Five patients were neutropenic. Bronchofiberoscopic examination with microbiology specimen brush and bronchoalveolar lavage yielded Aspergillus fumigatus in only 2/5 patients examined. The specific diagnosis reached during lifetime in 5 patients was based on a combination of invasive procedures (lung biopsy in 2, percutaneous lung puncture in 1), the presence of a lung abscess (3 patients), seroconversion (1 patient), and purulent maxillary sinusitis caused by A. fumigatus together with re…

A Preliminary Numerical Study of Nasal Air Conditioning Following Maxillary Sinus Stent Implantation.

Sinus stent implantation (SSI) has been widely used in refractory sinusitis surgery, but it often leads to postoperative crusting and infections, while its impact on nasal air conditioning remains unclear. In this study, two post- functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) sinonasal cavity models were used to virtually reconstruct three left maxillary sinus stent implantation (MSSI) models with varying implantation depths (D). Computational analysis was conducted to evaluate temperature and humidity changes in the nasal cavity and around the stent under different D and inhalation conditions. R

Clinical and Radiological Analysis of Odontogenic Sinusitis: A Retrospective Study.

Background/Objectives: Odontogenic sinusitis (ODS) is a distinct subtype of chronic rhinosinusitis that arises from dental pathology, with unique etiologies and treatment strategies. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical features, radiological findings, and surgical outcomes of ODS patients treated with endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). Methods: This retrospective study included 139 patients diagnosed with ODS who underwent ESS. Demographic characteristics, clinical symptoms, radiological findings, and treatment outcomes were analyzed. Outcomes were assessed using pre- and postoperative Lund

Modelling Intra-Sinus Fluid Movements and Drainage Through Computational Fluid Dynamics Before and After Maxillary Sinus Augmentation: A Simulation-Based Pilot Study.

Objectives: Sinus lifting, a procedure to augment bone in the maxilla, may cause complications such as sinusitis due to impaired drainage. This study aimed to assess how sinus lifting impacts airflow in the sinus cavity, which is essential for patients undergoing dental implants. Using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), this research analyzed airflow changes after sinus floor elevation, offering insights into the aerodynamic consequences of the procedure. Methods: Digital modeling and CFD analysis were performed using patient cone-beam computed tomography data. Three different sinus elevation

Paranasal sinus angiosarcoma with facial paralysis as a novel manifestation: a case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: Paranasal sinus angiosarcoma is an uncommon malignancy, with only a few reported cases worldwide. Although it exhibits multiple symptoms, facial paralysis has not been previously documented as a noticeable presentation. CASE PRESENTATION: In this case, we report a 40-year-old male who presented with facial numbness and pain for one month, weakness of his facial muscles for 15 days, and recurrent right epistaxis for 1 year. He had a history of nasal inflammatory polyps with chronic sinusitis. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed space-occupying lesions in the r

Analysis of the Radiological Changes of the Sinus Membrane Using Cone Beam Computed Tomography and Its Relationship with Dental Treatments. A Retrospective Study.

The aim of this study was to identify the most relevant dental factors and iatrogenic causes in the development of pathological changes to the sinus membrane and to analyse their possible influence on the development of odontogenic sinusitis. A descriptive, observational study was designed, with 276 patients who had been evaluated via cone beam computed tomography, analysing possible sinus thickening factors, such as apical infections, endodontic treatments, periodontitis, radicular cysts and impacted teeth, as well as iatrogenic factors caused by implant treatments or the development of oroan

Increased epithelial cell proliferation in nasal polyps.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The mucociliary function of the sinonasal mucosa is an innate defense mechanism of the human nasal airway. Epithelial cell proliferation is required for cell renewal and repair of the sinonasal mucosa. In this study, the MIB-1 monoclonal antibody, which can detect the S-phase nuclear protein Ki-67, was used to evaluate the proliferation of the sinonasal mucosa in patients with various inflammatory conditions of the sinonasal mucosa. METHODS: Specimens from the inferior turbinates of patients with nasal allergy (n = 12), vasomotor rhinitis (n = 20), nasal polyps (n = 22
