Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in a toddler with iron deficiency anemia.

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis (CSVT) is an increasingly recognized cause of neurological morbidity and mortality within the pediatric population. Unlike its manifestation in the adult population, CSVT in children has a broad and often multifactorial cause. Our case describes an 18-month-old young boy presenting to the emergency department twice during a 48-hour period with vomiting and lethargy. The child was found to have a sagittal sinus venous thrombosis caused by severe dietary iron deficiency anemia. Severe iron deficiency anemia has been linked to CSVT formation in several recent case r

Unusual cases of intussusception.

Intussusception occurs most commonly in the first five years of life and is classically associated with intense intermittent abdominal pain, vomiting, bloody mucoid diarrhea, and a palpable abdominal mass. These cardinal findings are frequently not present, however, particularly outside the usual age range. The emergency physician must therefore be vigilant in considering intussusception as a potential cause for intestinal obstruction in all patients, if ischemic complications are to be avoided. We present three cases of "unusual" intussusception, and provide a review of this entity and a guid

Application value of small intestinal endoscopic ultrasonography for protruding lesions of the small intestine.

BACKGROUND: Small intestinal endoscopic ultrasonography (SIEUS) enables the comprehensive analysis of the origin and sonographic characteristics of protruding submucosal lesions. Current evidence is limited to case reports. We aimed to investigate the application value of SIEUS for protruding lesions of the small intestine. METHODS: Clinical data of patients who underwent double-balloon enteroscopy combined with SIEUS at the Sixth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University between January 2023 and December 2024 were retrospectively collected. A total of 28 patients had concurrently receive

Management of Foreign Bodies Crossing the Gastroesophageal Junction in Children.

OBJECTIVE: Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common problem in children and is an important public health problem in terms of causing serious complications. This study aims to evaluate the complication management and intervention rates of FBs crossing the gastroesophageal junction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hospital records of all children who presented to our clinic because of ingestion of FB between August 2019 and August 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who had an FB crossing the esophagogastric junction on plain radiographs showing the entire gastrointestinal tract taken at th

Clinical management and recommendations for children with more than four episodes of recurrent intussusception following successful reduction of each: an institutional review.

AIM: To describe patterns and risk factors of multiple recurrences to optimise management for pediatric patients with more than four episodes of intussusception. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Following IRB approval, all sonographic evaluations for intussusception in patients <18 years over a 6-year period were reviewed. Data extracted included age at onset of first intussusception, gender, presenting symptoms, symptoms upon recurrence, presence of pathological lead points, and surgical findings. RESULTS: During a 6-year period, five cases had four or more instances of recurrence after enema reducti

Enhanced recovery after surgery in pediatric gastrointestinal surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols help optimize inpatient care and minimize discomfort. This study was performed to explore the safety, feasibility, and clinical and social value of ERAS in pediatric gastrointestinal surgery. METHODS: This study included all children (n = 125) who underwent appendectomy, pyloromyotomy, transabdominal Soave’s procedure, Meckel’s diverticulum resection, or reduction of intussusception in our institution from January to September 2018. We compared surgical outcomes between children who underwent surgery under conventional perioperative

Intraoperative Consultations to Acute Care Surgery at a Level I Trauma Center.

Intraoperative consultations are an important component of acute care surgery (ACS). The nature of these consultations is incompletely characterized by the existing literature. The study objective was to define the characteristics of intraoperative consults managed by a mature ACS program at a Level I trauma center. All intraoperative consultations requested from the ACS service at LAC+USC Medical Center (January 2011-July 2016) were identified. Demographics, date/time of consultation, referring service, procedure data, and outcomes were abstracted. Sixty-four intraoperative consultations were

Adult intussusception : A 14-year retrospective study of clinical assessment and computed tomography diagnosis.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Intussusception in adults often remains unrecognized. Our aim was to report our experience with this entity to determine the usefulness of CT scan in its preoperative diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The medical records and imaging studies of all patients ≥16 years of age with intussusception, who were managed at our hospitals, were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: 17 cases of adult intussusception (7 males, 10 females; mean age 35.9 years; age range of 16-78) were identified. The diagnosis was possible in all patients using CT scan. The underlying etiologies wer
