Early exposure to parental depression and parenting: associations with young offspring's stress physiology and oppositional behavior.

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis reactivity to stress is posited to play a role in the intergenerational transmission of risk for psychopathology and other negative outcomes in the offspring of depressed parents. We tested the hypothesis that the joint, interactive effects of exposure to parental depression during early childhood and parental hostility impact the development of young children's stress physiology and early emerging behavior problems. A sample of 165 preschool-age children (81 boys, 84 girls), of whom 103 had a parent with a history of depression, was exposed to a stres

Conflict resolution dynamics with stable caregivers confer resilience for youth exposed to early caregiving-related adversity.

Contingent responses in which caregiver and child build on each other's positive behavior may attenuate the deleterious effects of early adversity on youth mental health and neuroendocrine functioning. 159 caregiver-child dyads (child age: 6-16 years; 50.9% male; 44.6% adversity-exposed in stable arrangements with adoptive caregivers) participated in a 6-min conflict resolution task, which was coded for second-by-second changes in caregivers' and children's behavior (κ's >0.78). Caregivers reported on their child's mental health problems; youth hair cortisol concentration was obtained. Caregiv

Evaluating the Effects of Self-Monitoring of Performance with a Peer Component on Disruptive Behavior and Task Completion of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Self-monitoring (SM) is a widely used intervention to address a myriad of problem behaviors exhibited by individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and other disabilities (e.g., specific learning disability). SM of performance (SMP) interventions have been effective in increasing task completion and on-task behaviors in the general education setting. However, most of the research on SM interventions has been completed in a school setting, and few have evaluated the inclusion of a peer mediator component within a SM treatment package. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate th…

Diabetes stress contagion among romantic partners: a daily diary investigation.

The stress of diabetes management not only affects persons with type 1 diabetes (PWD) but also their social network. We examined the extent to which romantic partners of PWD (n = 199) identified their most significant daily stressor as diabetes-related (i.e., partner diabetes stress) using a 14-day daily diary design. Utilizing a communal coping framework, we examined appraisal and communication as predictors of partner diabetes stress and examined links of partner diabetes stress to supportive/unsupportive behavior and mood by assessing each construct daily. We also examined whether a survey

Influence of Metallic Nanoparticles on Blood Flow Through Arteries Having Both Stenosis and Aneurysm.

The main objective of the present paper is to discuss the blood flow analysis through inclined arteries by treating its nature as viscous fluid. The effects of both dilatation and constriction are considered to investigate the behavior of the both abnormal wall segments with variable nanofluid viscosity. The nonlinear momentum equation for proposed model is simplified by considering the nondimensionless parameters to find the exact solutions of the formulated problem. The main hemodynamic effects of stenosis and aneurysm are discussed for different values of the interest by plotting the graphs

Adults with autism spectrum disorder as behavior technicians for young children with autism: Outcomes of a behavioral skills training program.

Adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), who were interested in working as behavior technicians for young children with autism, participated in 2 experiments. Participants included 5 adults with Asperger syndrome or pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified, 19 to 23 years old, and 11 children with autism, 3 to 7 years old. In Experiment 1, training of the adults focused on the implementation of mand training via incidental teaching. Experiment 2 focused on teaching participants to use discrete-trial training (DTT) with children who exhibited problem behavior. Both experiment…

From a distance: implications of spontaneous self-distancing for adaptive self-reflection.

Although recent experimental work indicates that self-distancing facilitates adaptive self-reflection, it remains unclear (a) whether spontaneous self-distancing leads to similar adaptive outcomes, (b) how spontaneous self-distancing relates to avoidance, and (c) how this strategy impacts interpersonal behavior. Three studies examined these issues demonstrating that the more participants spontaneously self-distanced while reflecting on negative memories, the less emotional (Studies 1-3) and cardiovascular (Study 2) reactivity they displayed in the short term. Spontaneous self-distancing was al

Youth suicide in New Mexico: a 26-year retrospective review.

Although suicidal behavior in children and adolescents is a major public health problem, large-scale research on suicide in this population is uncommon. In this study, we reviewed autopsy and field reports for all pediatric suicide cases referred to the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator from 1979 to 2005. The age-adjusted suicide rate was 4.8 per 100,000. Psychologic stressors and parasuicidal behavior were identified in some cases. Seventy-six percent of suicides occurred in the victim's home or yard, and 25% left a suicide note. In 26% of cases, alcohol or other drugs were detect

Attitudes and knowledge about drinking: relationships with drinking behavior among pregnant teenagers.

Data were collected on the drinking behavior of 415 pregnant adolescents from 1990 to 1994. The relationships between knowledge and attitudes about drinking and drinking behavior were examined. Knowledge about drinking was not related to average daily volume of alcohol before or during pregnancy. Those with specific knowledge about fetal alcohol effects drank less before pregnancy, and in the first trimester, and were also less likely to drink to intoxication. Among drinkers, general knowledge about drinking was significantly related to a decrease in drinking between pre-pregnancy and first tr

Environmental conditions, health behavior, and mortality in siblings as risk indicators of night blindness.

The purpose of the study was to estimate the association of environmental factors (water and sanitation), health behavior (breast feeding practice and vaccination), and mortality among siblings with night blindness. A total of 5,420 children were enrolled in a cross-sectional study from 2,101 households in the northern part of Bangladesh, a high risk area for night blindness. One hundred twenty-four children were reported by parents to have night blindness. Our results indicated that environmental factors, health behavior, and the death of siblings were significantly associated with the occurr

Increasing spontaneous verbal responding in autistic children using a time delay procedure.

One oft-cited problem with teaching speech skills to autistic children is the failure of the speech to be spontaneous. That is, the children's speech often remains under the control of the verbal behavior of others rather than under the control of other nonverbal referents in the environment. We investigated the effectiveness of a time delay procedure to increase the spontaneous speech of seven autistic children. Initially, the experiment presented a desired object (e.g., cookie) and immediately modeled the appropriate response "I want (cookie)." Gradually, as the child imitated the vocalizati

Risk factors for the perpetration of child sexual abuse: a review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Since the late 1980s, there has been a strong theoretical focus on psychological and social influences of perpetration of child sexual abuse. This paper presents the results of a review and meta-analysis of studies examining risk factors for perpetration of child sexual abuse published since 1990. METHOD: Eighty-nine studies published between 1990 and April of 2003 were reviewed. Risk factors were classified into one of the following six broad categories: family factors, externalizing behaviors, internalizing behaviors, social deficits, sexual problems, and attitudes/beliefs. Sex

Neurobehavioral characteristics of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders in communities from Italy: Preliminary results.

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable effort expended on defining neurobehavioral characteristics of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Children with FASD display a range of cognitive deficits and behavioral problems. In this article, we report on the neurobehavioral characteristics of children with FASD in selected communities in Italy. It was expected that both inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive characteristics would discriminate children with FASD from controls and that the groups would also differ on intellectual functioning, language comprehension, and academic sk

Visit rates and risk factors of healthcare-seeking behavior for urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse among women: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Female pelvic floor dysfunction(FPFD), including urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse, is an expanding global health problem among women, declining their quality of life. Healthcare-seeking behavior of FPFD patients plays a vital role in preventing symptom deterioration and reducing future burdens. Poor healthcare-seeking behavior has resulted in lower visit rates than prevalence. This study aimed to investigate the visit rate and risk factors of healthcare-seeking behavior in patients with FPFD and to provide a basis for developing prevention strat
