Exploring stakeholder perceptions and priorities related to reducing tick-related public health risks in natural environments of the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne disease (TBD) risks to humans and livestock are increasing rapidly in temperate regions, including the UK, with severe impacts on human and animal health and livelihoods. These threats could be exacerbated by large-scale policy-driven changes to increase woodland area and connectivity, which might increase the abundance of the key tick vector, Ixodes ricinus, and its interactions with people, livestock and wildlife hosts. Environmental interventions have been suggested as potential ecologically friendly options with the propensity to mitigate risk from ticks and TBDs in

First report on anticoccidial drug resistance in Eimeria species of broilers from Kashmir, a North-Western Himalayan region.

This study represents the first report on anticoccidial drug resistance in Eimeria species infecting broiler chickens in Kashmir, North India, a region with unique temperate climatic conditions conducive to oocyst survival. A mixed population of field strains of Eimeria spp. from poultry farms in Kashmir Valley was evaluated to assess the current anticoccidial resistance status following World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) guidelines. The oocyst inoculum comprised of seven Eimeria species identified morphologically, of which five (E. acervulina, E. maxima,

Efficient in vivo mammalian neuron editing using peptide-mediated CRISPR enzyme delivery.

UNLABELLED: CRISPR-mediated genome editing of the central nervous system (CNS) has the potential to revolutionize the treatment of neurological disorders, including neurodegenerative disorders such as Huntington's disease (HD). However, the development of CRISPR therapeutics for the CNS has been hindered by challenges associated with delivery, specifically the lack of a clinically compatible, non-viral delivery technology facilitating genome editing of neurons in vivo . For most indications, two key obstacles must be overcome before therapeutic genome editing of the brain is feasible: non-toxi

Shanidar 3 'rings the bell': Virtual ribcage reconstruction and its implications for understanding the Neanderthal bauplan.

The study of the ribcage is fundamental to understanding hominin evolution. However, ribs and vertebrae are scarce in the fossil record. Although Neanderthals are one of the most represented and, therefore, one of the most studied fossil Homo species, it is controversial whether there is a standardized Neanderthal ribcage morphotype that could differ from modern humans. Hence, we used three-dimensional geometric morphometrics to reconstruct and compare the Neanderthal ribcage of Shanidar 3 with another Neanderthal specimen, Kebara 2, and with 58 Homo sapiens individuals of worldwide distributi

"It Feels Like Health Care with the Patient in Mind": VA Patient and Staff Perspectives on Self-Collected HPV Testing.

PURPOSE: Self-collected testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) is poised to transform cervical cancer screening. Self-tests demonstrate similar accuracy to clinician-collected tests, but for the half a million women served by the Veterans Health Administration (VA) and their clinicians, self-collected cervical cancer screening would be a new practice. We examined VA patient and staff perspectives to inform future implementation. METHODS: Semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted between 2021 and 2022 with female veterans receiving VA care (n = 22) and VA women's health nurses, clini

Dietary Walnuts Preserve Aspects of Health Span and Alter the Hippocampal Lipidome in Aged High-Fat Diet-Fed Mice.

Evidence continues to accrue that aging and its diseases can be delayed by pharmacologic and dietary strategies that target the underlying hallmarks of the aging process. However, identifying simple, safe, and effective dietary strategies involving the incorporation of whole foods that may confer some protection against the aging process is also needed. Recent observational studies have suggested that nut consumption can reduce mortality risk in humans. Among these, walnuts are particularly intriguing, given their high content of n-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidant and anti-inflammatory co

Road salt pollution alters sex ratios in emerging mosquito populations.

De-icing road salt is a persistent emerging pollutant in temperate freshwater systems, where winter salting is necessary for road and pedestrian safety. Experts argue that road salts may increase salt-tolerant mosquito populations and, potentially, disease transmission in urban areas. Only adult females consume bloodmeals and may carry zoonotic diseases. While there are some species with naturally occurring male-biased sex ratios, it is unclear whether road salt differentially affects male and female mosquitoes to alter sex ratios. We hypothesized that road salts would masculinize emergence se

Multiple species of canine Rhipicephalus complex detected in Canada.

Multiple species of brown dog ticks have been described in the United States and the Caribbean: Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu stricto (s.s.), also referred to as temperate lineage; R. linnaei (=tropical lineage); and R. rutilus (=southeastern Europe lineage) However, Rhipicephalus spp. are rarely recovered from dogs in Canada. To identify canine Rhipicephalus spp. in Canada and determine the influence of travel history on infestation, ticks morphologically identified as brown dog ticks (n = 93) collected from dogs (n = 13) in British Columbia, Ontario, and Québec, Canada were submitted with i
