[Sensory-psychomotor evaluation in Autism: A new tool for functional diagnosis].

INTRODUCTION: Psychomotor impairments in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) have frequently been described in scientific literature. Such deficits impact upon the development of social motor function and interfere with the ability to adjust to everyday life. The inclusion of sensory-motor signs in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) confirms their importance in the diagnosis of ASD. Previous literature has shown the presence precocity of these signs, sometimes before the alteration of the social communication. To our knowledge, there are no existing clinical tools to

Static Plantar-Load Distribution and Stabilometry in Children and Adolescents with Idiopathic Scoliosis Under Different Testing Conditions: A Pilot Study.

Background/Objectives: Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is associated not only with structural spinal deformities but also with alterations in postural control and sensorimotor integration. Objective assessment of balance and plantar-load distribution may provide additional insight into functional impairments, particularly in patients with mild and moderate curves. The aim of this study was to compare static plantar-load distribution and stabilometry parameters in children and adolescents with idiopathic scoliosis under different sensory and postural conditions. Methods: This pilot study

The Influence of Kinesiophobia on Time to Clinical Recovery in Collegiate Athletes with Concussion.

BACKGROUND: Several factors such as acute symptom severity, premorbid anxiety, and depression have been associated with concussion recovery. Elevated kinesiophobia has been associated with recovery from musculoskeletal conditions, as well as increased reaction time and vestibular-ocular motor dysfunction following concussion. However, kinesiophobia has yet to be evaluated as a modifier of concussion recovery time. OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to evaluate the role of acute kinesiophobia levels on days until clinical recovery in collegiate athletes with concussion. We hypothesized that c

Vestibular schwannoma surgery in the elderly: a matched cohort study.

OBJECT: The authors' objective was 2-fold: 1) to compare outcomes of microsurgical resection for vestibular schwannoma (VS) between patients aged 70 years or older and patients younger than 70 years and 2) to test the hypothesis that symptomatic tumors in elderly patients represent a more aggressive variant of VS than those in younger adults, resulting in increased morbidity and a higher rate of recurrence after subtotal resection (STR). METHODS: A retrospective matched cohort study was conducted. Patients aged 70 years or older who had undergone microsurgical resection of VS were matched to

Trampoline exercise reduces anxiety and improves motor skills in children with autism spectrum disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety affects approximately 40% to 50% of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet evidence-based nonpharmacological interventions remain limited. Trampoline exercise, which combines vestibular stimulation and aerobic activity, may offer dual benefits by reducing anxiety and improving motor skills in this population. To examine the effects of an 8-week trampoline exercise program on anxiety, motor performance, and physiological outcomes (heart rate variability, HRV) in children with mild-to-moderate ASD. METHODS: This assessor-blinded, randomized controlled trial (Regis

Spatial orientation and balance control changes induced by altered gravitoinertial force vectors.

To better understand the mechanisms of human adaptation to rotating environments, we exposed 19 healthy subjects and 8 vestibular-deficient subjects ("abnormal"; four bilateral and four unilateral lesions) to an interaural centripetal acceleration of 1 g (resultant 45 degrees roll-tilt of 1.4 g) on a 0.8-m-radius centrifuge for periods of 90 min. The subjects sat upright (body z-axis parallel to centrifuge rotation axis) in the dark with head stationary, except during 4 min of every 10 min, when they performed head saccades toward visual targets switched on at 3- to 5-s intervals at random loc

Inhibition of post-meningitic cochlear injury with cerebrospinal fluid irrigation.

OBJECTIVE: Labyrinthitis ossificans, the pathologic ossification of the otic capsule associated with profound deafness and loss of vestibular function occurs frequently as a sequella of bacterial meningitis and subsequent purulent labyrinthitis. Experimentally, in Streptococcus pneumoniae meningitis, it has been shown that a vigorous inflammatory response to teichoic acids in the bacterial cell wall contributes to cochlear damage and subsequent fibrosis and ossification. The hypothesis of this study is that a dilution of concentration of inflammatory mediators through cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)

Positive pressure therapy for Ménière's disease or syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Ménière's disease is an incapacitating disease in which recurrent attacks of vertigo are accompanied by hearing loss, tinnitus and/or aural fullness, all of which are discontinuous and variable in intensity. A number of different therapies have been identified for patients with this disease, ranging from dietary measures (e.g. a low-salt diet) and medication (e.g. betahistine (Serc®), diuretics) to extensive surgery (e.g. endolymphatic sac surgery). The Meniett® low-pressure pulse generator (Medtronic ENT, 1999) is a device that is designed to generate a computer-controlled sequenc

Common Neurologic Diseases in Geriatric Dogs.

The increase in the canine geriatric population means that veterinarians are more often confronted with diseases that are more prevalent in patients in this age group. As in other organ systems, degenerative, neoplastic, and vascular diseases are the most prevalent neurologic disorders in older dogs. A neurological disease in an older dog poses a challenge for the clinician due to the presence of concomitant diseases and age-related changes that make it difficult to interpret the neurological examination. In addition, given the age of the patients, some owners do not allow advanced imaging tes

A new approach to characterize postural deficits in chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy and to analyze postural adaptions after an exercise intervention.

BACKGROUND: Postural instability presents a common and disabling consequence of chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN). However, knowledge about postural behavior of CIPN patients is sparse. With this pilot study, we used a new approach to i) characterize postural impairments as compared to healthy subjects, ii) allocate possible abnormalities to a set of parameters describing sensorimotor function, and iii) evaluate the effects of a balance-based exercise intervention. METHODS: We analyzed spontaneous and externally perturbed postural control in eight CIPN patients before and afte

NF2-Related Schwannomatosis (NF2): Molecular Insights and Therapeutic Avenues.

NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2) is a genetic syndrome characterized by the growth of benign tumors in the nervous system, particularly bilateral vestibular schwannomas, meningiomas, and ependymomas. This review consolidates the current knowledge on NF2 syndrome, emphasizing the molecular pathology associated with the mutations in the gene of the same name, the NF2 gene, and the subsequent dysfunction of its product, the Merlin protein. Merlin, a tumor suppressor, integrates multiple signaling pathways that regulate cell contact, proliferation, and motility, thereby influencing tumor growth.
