The cell line HMC-1, derived from a patient with mast cell leukaemia, is the only established cell line exhibiting a phenotype similar to that of human mast cells. Clinical features, as well as morphology, immunophenotype and cytogenetics were retrospectively studied in 20 patients with an original diagnosis of erythroleukaemia (EL) reclassified according to the FAB criteria. 172 cases of lymphogranulomatosis X (LgX) were studied by light microscopy. In 53 cases immunohistological techniques for detecting intracytoplasmic immunoglobulins were applied. We have investigated a 13-year-old girl from first cousin parents who presented with severe hemolytic anemia. Hematologic studies showed unstable hemoglobin (Hb) disease (chronic Heinz body anemia), and DNA analysis showed that the patient was homozygous for the previously reported abnormal Hb called Hb Bushwick (beta 74E18 gly-->val).
