Pre-infusion risk factors predict severe infectious complications of CAR T-cell therapy in pediatric and adult patients with B-ALL.

BACKGROUND: Despite the curative potential for chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cells in B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL), efficacy can be limited by life-threatening adverse events such as severe infections. As immune effector cell-associated hematotoxicity and secondary immunodeficiency may be particularly profound in B-ALL, understanding pre-infusion risk of severe infection is imperative. The ALL-HEMATOTOX (ALL-HT) score is a recently validated tool designed to predict CAR-associated hematotoxicity in B-ALL, but the relationship between ALL-HT and severe infections post-infusio

Squamous neoplasia of the scrotum: a series of 29 cases.

The current epidemiology and clinicopathologic features of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) of the scrotum are largely unknown because of its low incidence. We describe the histopathologic features, immunohistochemistry, and human papillomavirus (HPV) status of 29 patients with scrotal SCC. The mean age at presentation was 55 years (range, 30 to 74 y). White to black ratio was 1.9:1. There was no predominant occupation, with the majority being white-collar professionals. Clinical history of condylomas was present in 5 patients, and 7 patients had a history of multiple skin cancers including melan

A mobile health-based alcohol reduction intervention and its usability among persons with Human Immunodeficiency Virus in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and alcohol use are widespread in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA), negatively impacting the continuum of HIV care, from prevention and testing to treatment outcomes. Reducing alcohol consumption among people with HIV (PWH) is therefore a public health priority. Most alcohol reduction strategies require in-person interactions and can be challenging during pandemics and social unrest, which are common in sSA. Mobile Health (mHealth) interventions may offer a more accessible reduction counselling, an accessible alternative to, or may augment, in-person inte

Performance evaluation of a laboratory developed PCR test for quantitation of HIV-2 viral RNA.

Management of Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 2 (HIV-2) infections present unique challenges due to low viral titers, slow disease progression, and poor response to standard antiviral therapies. The need for a nucleic acid assay to detect and quantify HIV-2 virus has led to the development of a number of molecular-based assays for detection and/or quantification of HIV-2 viral RNA in plasma in order to provide laboratory evidence of HIV-2 infection and viral loads for use in treatment decisions. As HIV-2 is less pathogenic and transmissible than HIV-1 and has resistance to several of the ant

Risk factors for breast cancer among women in Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, Gauteng province of South Africa, 2017‒2020: a case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Breast cancer (BC) is the most common cancer among women in South Africa (SA), with an age-standardised incidence rate of 52.6 and an age-standardised mortality rate of 16.0 per 100,000 population. There is a paucity of evidence on the risk factors for BC among women of all races in SA. Given the rising prevalence of BC in SA, literature-based evidence is critical for the appropriate dissemination of preventative measures. This study aimed to identify the risk factors associated with the development of BC among women in Ekhuruleni Metropolitan Municipality. METHODS: An unmatched

A Comparative Analysis of Comorbidities, Clinical Profiles, and Treatment Outcomes Among Geriatric and Non-geriatric Tuberculosis Patients in New Delhi, India: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

Background Tuberculosis (TB) outcomes are strongly influenced by age-related factors and coexisting chronic illnesses. With a rapidly aging population and a rising non-communicable disease burden in India, understanding how comorbidities affect clinical presentation and treatment outcomes among geriatric TB patients is essential for optimizing programmatic care under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP). Methods This retrospective comparative cohort study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in New Delhi and included 951 adult TB patients enrolled under NTEP between Marc

Clinical Characteristics, Diagnostic Performance, and Treatment Outcomes of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis at a Tertiary Care Center in Oman: A 10-year Retrospective Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) accounts for a substantial proportion of the global tuberculosis (TB) burden and continues to pose major diagnostic and therapeutic challenges, particularly in low-incidence settings. Comprehensive descriptions of the clinical spectrum, diagnostic yield of available laboratory modalities, and treatment-related toxicity of EPTB in the Arabian Gulf are limited. We aimed to describe the clinical characteristics, diagnostic performance of microbiological and histopathological tests, and safety profile of first-line anti-TB therapy in adult patients wi

Prevalence and predictors of transfusion-transmitted infections among blood donor types at a teaching hospital in Ghana: Implications for haemovigilance.

INTRODUCTION: Transfusion-transmitted infections (TTIs), notably hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and syphilis, remain a major threat to blood safety in resource-limited settings. Ghana mainly uses rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) for initial screening, which may affect the accuracy of detecting TTIs. OBJECTIVE: This study estimated the prevalence, identified sociodemographic and donor-type predictors of TTIs and compared the diagnostic yield of RDTs versus ELISA in a teaching hospital in the Central Region of Ghana. METHODS: This retrospecti

The Effect of HBV/HCV in Response to HAART in HIV Patients after 12 Months in Kumba Health District in the South West Region of Cameroon.

Hepatitis B (HBV) and C (HCV) are two among the numerous forms of infections whose clinical degeneration, morbidity-mortality and low immune responsiveness in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) are highly evident. Co-infection of HIV with HBV and HCV has been associated with reduced survival, increased risk of progression to liver diseases and increased risk of hepatotoxicity associated with antiretroviral therapy (ARV). We carried out biochemical, immunological, virological and clinical analysis of hepatitis B and C positive HIV patients as well as some HIV positive individ

Endothelial markers and HIV infection in the era of highly active antiretroviral treatment.

Many circumstances can induce activation and/or injury of the endothelium that plays a role in the development of vascular complications. Raised plasma levels of endothelial markers such as von Willebrand factor (vWF), soluble thrombomodulin (sTM) and soluble vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1) have a prognostic and/or diagnostic value. Human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients (HIV+) have a clustering of conditions that activate or injure the endothelium. Highly active antiretroviral treatment produces adverse effects such as dyslipemia, insulin resistance (IR) and body fat chang
