The expression and regulation of IGF-I is tissue-specific in diabetes mellitus in the rat. These studies were designed to examine if similar tissue specificity exists for IGF-BPs in the diabetic milieu. Diabetes mellitus was induced by a single i.p. injection of STZ (100 mg/kg body weight). Rats were treated with either vehicle--insulin, vanadate, or phlorizin for 7-14 days. Integrins are adhesion receptors that mediate many intercellular and cell-extracellular matrix interactions with relevance in physiology and pathology. Unlike other cellular receptors, integrins critically require activation for ligand binding. Through interaction in cis with other molecules and the formation of tetraspanin-enriched membrane microdomains (TEMs), the tetraspanin CD9 regulates integrin activity and avidity. BACKGROUND: Charnley low-friction torque total hip arthroplasty (THA) remains the gold standard in THA. The main cause for failure is wear of the socket. Highly crosslinked polyethylene (HXLPE) has been associated with reduced wear rates. Also, oxidized zirconium has shown in vitro reduced wear rates. However, to our knowledge, there are no data comparing oxidized zirconium femoral heads with metal heads against HXLPE or ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) when 22.25-mm bearings were used, which was the same size that performed so well in Charnley-type THAs.
