OBJECT: Controlled hypotension is routinely used during open repair of craniosynostosis to decrease blood loss, although this benefit is unproven. In this study the authors analyzed the longitudinal relationships between intraoperative mean arterial pressure (MAP) and calculated blood loss (CBL) during frontoorbital advancement (FOA) for craniosynostosis.
METHODS: The authors reviewed the records of infants with craniosynostosis who had undergone primary FOA between 1997 and 2009. Anesthesia records provided preoperative and serial intraoperative MAP. Interval measures of CBL had been determi

One of the most important components of orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning is the evaluation of the patient's soft tissue profile. The aim of this study was to develop angular photogrammetric standards for Class I Anatolian Turkish males and females. A random sample of 100 Turkish individuals (46 males and 54 females; ages 19-25 years) was obtained. The photographic set-up consisted of a tripod that held a 35 mm camera and a primary flash. The camera was used in its manual position and photographic records were taken of the subjects in natural head posture. The photographic records,

A case of Pott's puffy tumour in a diabetic patient with renal failure is reported. The patient did not respond to intravenous antibiotics and further investigation revealed that the patient had mucormycosis. As far as we are aware, this is the first case of Pott's puffy tumour due to mucormycosis to be reported in the literature.

Plagiocephaly is a term commonly used to describe congenital forehead asymmetry. Sixty patients with frontal plagiocephaly were evaluated retrospectively and separated into three types: synostotic (N = 24), compensational (N = 3), and deformational (N = 33). Categorization of frontal plagiocephaly as synostotic or deformational was reliably made by physical examination, focusing on the supraorbital rims, nasal root, ears, and malar eminences. Other anatomic parameters useful in the differential diagnosis included chin point, palpebral fissures, and facial height. This study documented that bir

Post-natal growth of the skull vault occurs by the addition of new bone at the margins of individual calvarial bones. Continued growth depends on the maintenance of a proliferating osteogenic precursor cell population in the sutural membrane between the bones. Mutations in fibroblast growth factor receptors (FGFRs) have recently been detected as the cause of a number of human abnormalities characterized by premature sutural closure, i.e., craniosynostosis. These are activating mutations causing early differentiation of osteogenic precursor cells. Transforming growth factor-betas (TGF-Bs) are a

INTRODUCTION: Surgery in the temporomesial region is generally performed using a subtemporal, transtemporal, or pterional-transsylvian approach. However, these approaches may lead to approach-related trauma of the temporal lobe and frontotemporal operculum with subsequent postoperative neurological deficits. Iatrogenic traumatisation is especially significant if surgery is performed in the dominant hemisphere.
METHODS: During a five-year period between January 2003 and December 2007, we have approached the temporomesial region in 21 cases via the supraorbital approach. In 15 cases, the lesion

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Frontoethmoidal encephalocele (FEE) is an uncommon congenital abnormality that occurs due to the protrusion of intracranial contents through a hole in the skull bone, at the frontal and ethmoidal bones, with a higher prevalence in Southeast Asia and parts of Africa compared to Western countries. Our case is the first documented case of FEE in Sudan, offering epidemiological data from an underreported region and reviewing similar literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 21-day-old Sudanese male infant was presented with a soft, cystic, non-pulsatile swelling over the left

BACKGROUND: The nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses of cattle are complex anatomical structures that undergo significant changes throughout growth and maturation. Computed tomography (CT) is increasingly used as a routine imaging modality in small animals but remains less common in cattle due to technical limitations. However, it provides valuable diagnostic insight into the nasal cavities and sinuses, which are difficult to assess and often involved in disease processes.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide a detailed description of these structures using CT in cattle of different ages i

BACKGROUND: The identification of an individual after mass calamities poses challenges to experts when bones are fragmented. Dense bones, such as the maxilla, surpass this challenge and remain intact with sinuses even after incineration, thereby making the sinuses an ideal and reliable forensic science tool. No-ninvasive imaging techniques, such as Computed Tomography (CT), can be used to evaluate such cases and help detect fractures and further locate foreign bodies. This study aimed to estimate the dimensions and volumes of the frontal (FS), maxillary (MS), and sphenoidal air sinuses (SS) on

3M syndrome is characterized by severe pre- and post-natal growth restriction, typical face, slender tubular bones, tall vertebral bodies, prominent heels and normal intelligence. It is caused by biallelic variants of CUL7, OBSL1 and, more rarely, CCDC8. The aim of this study is to evaluate facial and skeletal findings in 3M patients from neonatal period to adulthood. A total of 19 patients with a median age of diagnosis of 9.2 months were included in this study and were followed for two to 20 years. CUL7 and OBSL1 variants were found in 57.9% and 42.1% of patients, respectively, five of which

Crassicauda spp. (Nematoda) infest the cranial sinuses of several odontocetes, causing diagnostic trabecular osteolytic lesions. We examined skulls of 77 Indian Ocean humpback dolphins Sousa plumbea and 69 Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins Tursiops aduncus, caught in bather-protecting nets off KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) from 1970-2017, and skulls of 6 S. plumbea stranded along the southern Cape coast in South Africa from 1963-2002. Prevalence of cranial crassicaudiasis was evaluated according to sex and cranial maturity. Overall, prevalence in S. plumbea and T. aduncus taken off KZN was 13 and 31.9%,
