Trachoma, flies and environmental factors in Burkina Faso.

The presence of flies is one of the earliest risk factors for trachoma and it has been suggested that flies could act as vectors for transmission of chlamydiae. A national trachoma survey was conducted in 1997 in Burkina Faso to (i) study the relationship between trachoma occurrence, flies, dirty faces and some environmental factors, and (ii) investigate the role of flies in the presence of trachoma. The country was stratified into eight groups of provinces and a random sample of 30 clusters was selected in each group. All children aged < 10 years were examined for the diagnosis of active trac

The importance of ecological studies in the control of tsetse flies.

The author reviews recent ecological research on tsetse flies in East Africa and Northern Nigeria, particularly in connexion with the flies' sensory reactions, and stresses the importance of an accurate knowledge of their daytime and night-time resting-sites and of identifying the sources of their blood meals in order to elucidate the reservoirs of trypanosomiasis. The epidemiology of the disease is considered in the light of studies of trypanosome infections in host and fly. The control of tsetse flies must be based on the practical application of ecological knowledge by methods involving eit

MaltEms-MaltOBP9 axis mediates sexually dimorphic olfactory behavior in Monochamus alternatus via recognition of pheromone 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol.

The olfactory system is essential for insect survival and behavior, with odorant-binding proteins (OBPs) playing a key role by binding and transporting chemical signals to olfactory receptors. Although MaltOBP9 from Monochamus alternatus, a primary vector of pine wilt disease, has been linked to olfactory functions in M. alternatus, its regulatory mechanisms and specific roles are not well understood. In this study, we show that MaltOBP9 is highly expressed in the antennae of both male and female adults after sexual maturation. Using fluorescence spectroscopy, molecular docking, and site-direc

ATG4B-dependent processing of tandem-domain BmLC3 exposes a Tyr136-regulated C-terminal fragment.

Autophagy-related protein 8 (ATG8) family proteins are ubiquitin-like modifiers that undergo ATG4-mediated processing before lipid conjugation. However, the structural and functional diversification of insect ATG8 proteins remains poorly understood. Here, comparative sequence analysis identified a 248-amino-acid LC3C-related protein from the silkworm Bombyx mori (BmLC3) containing two tandem LC3-like regions separated by an internal glycine at position 135 (G135), in addition to the canonical C-terminal glycine at position 248 (G248). In HeLa cells, N-terminally GFP-tagged BmLC3 generated a lo

Acute Contact and Oral Testing of Chemical Compounds on Vespa velutina nigrithorax (Hymenoptera, Vespidae) Under Laboratory Conditions.

Standardized laboratory assays are essential for generating reproducible and comparable data in toxicology. Although acute contact and oral toxicity tests are widely applied in pesticide risk assessment, these approaches have rarely been adapted for social vespids. Vespa velutina nigrithorax, an invasive hornet in Europe and East Asia, is commonly managed through chemical control, yet treatment efficacy may vary depending on the route of exposure and other biological factors. This protocol describes a standardized method to assess acute contact and oral toxicity of chemical compounds in adult

Synthesis and biological evaluation of novel heterocyclic compounds derived from ammonium thiocyanate for control of Culex pipiens and Musca domestica.

A series of benzo[f]quinoline-based heterocyclic compounds was synthesized through a cyanoacryloyl isothiocyanate intermediate and evaluated for larvicidal and biochemical activity against Culex pipiens and Musca domestica. Eleven derivatives were generated by reacting the intermediate 2 with various nitrogen nucleophiles, yielding pyrimidine, triazole, triazine, and other fused heterocycles. Several compounds showed strong larvicidal effects, with compounds 11, 12, and particularly compound 13 displaying higher potency than the reference insecticide chlorpyrifos, especially against Culex pipi

Cryptochrome-mediated integration of circadian rhythms into seasonal cycles in the silkworm Bombyx mori.

The domesticated silkworm Bombyx mori is both a major sericultural species and a powerful model for studying how environmental cues are converted into developmental decisions. A central seasonal trait in this species is embryonic diapause, a maternally programmed developmental arrest whose incidence is shaped by genetic background and environmental conditions experienced during the maternal generation. Recent genome-editing studies have provided new functional evidence for the role of circadian clock genes in this process, particularly the two silkworm cryptochromes, BmCRY1 and BmCRY2. BmCRY1

Oral RNAi in Euschistus heros: Evaluation of Gene Silencing Using Cationic Polymer-Stabilized dsRNA.

Euschistus heros, a key pest of soybean in the Neotropical region, represents a growing challenge to sustainable agricultural production. With the urgent need for more targeted and environmentally safe control strategies, RNA interference (RNAi) emerges as an innovative tool. This study investigated the gene-silencing potential of RNAi targeting V-ATPase and act, two genes involved in essential cellular processes. The sensitivity of E. heros to RNAi in adult and immature stages was evaluated by microinjection of dsRNA, as well as the ex-vivo degradation of double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) by nuclea

Allomyrinasin, an Edible Insect-Derived Peptide, Ameliorates High-Fat Diet-Induced Hepatic Oxidative Stress and Metabolic Dysfunction.

Allomyrinasin is an antimicrobial peptide derived from the larvae of the edible insect Allomyrina dichotoma and has been reported to exert anti-inflammatory activity, although its role in metabolic regulation remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the metabolic and hepatoprotective effects of allomyrinasin in a high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mouse model. Male C57BL/6J mice were fed an HFD for 6 weeks to induce body weight gain and hyperglycemia, followed by 10 weeks of oral administration of allomyrinasin (0.1 mg/kg/day) under continued HFD conditions, with metformin used as a pos

CLCuMuV-Induced Autophagy Restricts Viral Accumulation in the MED Cryptic Species of Bemisia tabaci.

Autophagy is a conserved cellular degradation pathway that plays important roles in insect-virus interactions. In the MED cryptic species of Bemisia tabaci, cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMuV) can persist upon acquisition, yet this vector fails to transmit the virus. However, whether autophagy contributes to this antiviral response in MED whiteflies remains unknown. In this study, we show that CLCuMuV acquisition activates autophagy in MED whiteflies, as evidenced by increased LC3-I to LC3-II conversion, enhanced LC3-positive puncta formation in the gut, and dynamic transcriptional regulat

Quartz crystal microbalance determination of acephate based on a molecularly imprinted polymer and sulphur-doped copper ferrites.

Acephate (ACE), an effective systemic insecticide, plays a significant role in agricultural pest control. For many decades, this compound has been used to manage various insect infestations in crops, contributing to healthier yields. Hence, the detection of ACE serves as a critical indicator, signaling potential environmental degradation, public health risks, and economic challenges, thereby prompting necessary policy adjustments. The sulphur-doped copper ferrites (S@CuFe2O4) were initially synthesized through a hydrothermal treatment process. Subsequently, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) ch

Impact of male-sterilizing doses and mating status on blood feeding rates and longevity in Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Anopheles arabiensis females.

The irradiation of female mosquitoes has been shown to influence blood feeding behavior, depending on dose, life stage at irradiation, and mating status. In sterile male releases during the sterile insect technique (SIT) programs, a small number of sterile females can be released accidentally, which may pose a manageable but nonnegligible risk regarding disease transmission. In this study, female Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, and Anopheles arabiensis were exposed to gamma irradiation at male-sterilizing doses and the blood feeding rates and longevity of mated versus unmated sterile females

Chagas disease: An increasing clinical concern.

Chagas disease (CD), or American trypanosomiasis, is a parasitic infection caused by Trypanosoma cruzi and transmitted primarily by triatomine "kissing bugs." Once limited to Latin America, CD is now considered endemic in the United States (US), affecting an estimated 280 000 individuals. This article aims to highlight the growing clinical relevance of CD through a case example and review of its epidemiology, clinical features, and management. Globally, 6 to 8 million people are infected, resulting in more than 50 000 deaths annually. Globalization, migration, and climate change have expanded

A dual-barrier disruption strategy employing lufenuron/dsRNA nanocomplexes overcomes both cuticular and intestinal barriers in late-instar lepidopteran pests.

Managing late-instar lepidopteran pests remains a critical challenge due to their robust physiological and physical barriers, which severely compromise the efficacy of insecticides. Lufenuron, an insect growth regulator, controls lepidopteran pests by inhibiting chitin biosynthesis, but its efficacy against late-instar larvae needs improvement. Here, we developed a dual-barrier disruption strategy by integrating nano-lufenuron with RNA interference targeting the chitin synthase genes PxCHS1 and PxCHS2 in the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. The nanocarrier star polycation (SPc)-mediated
