Ceratocystis adiposa known as phytopathogen of conifers has not been recognized so far as a human pathogen. Herein, we report for the first time a case of allergic fungal rhinosinusitis due to C. adiposa. The fungus was identified by sequencing internal transcribed spacer of rDNA and D1/D2 of larger subunit region.

The segmental haemorrhagic colitis has been described as a particular form of antibiotics-associated colitis under penicillin therapy. A 34-year-old male presented in reduced general condition. He suffered from haematoschezia and abdominal pain. Due to a sinusitis maxillaris he had taken ciprofloxacin tablets (500 mg b. i. d.) for four days prior to the day of admission. Upon physical examination a slight general abdominal pain on palpation and some fresh blood at rectal digital examination were found. Apart from a slightly elevated CK level, all other routinely checked laboratory parameters w

A 32-year-old woman noted left lid retraction during pregnancy. Examination revealed unilateral enophthalmos without symptoms of diplopia or sinus disease. Orbital imaging showed characteristic features of the silent sinus syndrome, which were confirmed intraoperatively. The clinical and imaging attributes of this syndrome are discussed, including possible mechanisms of disease development. Management strategies are summarized. A brief discussion of the differential diagnosis of enophthalmos is also included.

A progressive ethmoidal hematoma (PEH) was treated successfully in a 4-week-old Belgian filly by surgical removal, using a frontonasal bone flap. The filly had respiratory stridor, epistaxis, and facial enlargement over the left paranasal sinuses, which had progressively increased in size since birth. Computed tomographic images of the head obtained with the foal under general anesthesia were useful in determining the extent and nature of the soft-tissue mass and planning surgical intervention. On the basis of the histologic appearance of the mass, a diagnosis of PEH was made. Twelve months af

Once referred to as "flyer's toothache," barodontalgia is defined as tooth pain occurring with changes in ambient pressure. It usually occurs in people who fly or dive. It can develop in conjunction with sinusitis, and in teeth experiencing pulpitis after restorative treatment, new and recurrent caries, intra-treatment endodontic symptoms, dental and periodontal cysts, or abscesses. Although the causal process of barodontalgia is not well understood, it may be related to pulpal hyperemia, or to gases that are trapped in the teeth following incomplete root canal treatment. Patients who are freq

Infection of pulpally involved teeth near the maxillary sinus sometimes spreads into the sinus and causes serious complications. This pathological complex, involving both antral and periapical tissues, is referred to as the endo-antral syndrome (EAS). It includes diagnostic difficulties, treatment considerations, and occasionally persistent pathological antral alterations after nonsurgical endodontic therapy. Surgical measures are occasionally required to stimulate healing and preserve the teeth.

Dental infections, otitis media or sinusitis may present as fever of unknown origin (FUO), lacking local symptoms and signs. Physicians are often unaware of this possibility, since current textbooks and major articles do not mention occult facial infections among the causes of FUO. Patients with FUO typically undergo a laborious series of uncomfortable, time-consuming, expensive and often unnecessary investigations in the search for the cause of pyrexia. We report five such patients from a community hospital, representing 14% of cases in a series of patients with FUO. In most of these patients

Apparently, the incidence of postoperative maxillary sinus mucoceles is greater in Japan than in the Western world. Between 1967 and 1976 at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University Hospital, Department of Otorhinolaryngology, 132 patients had the diagnosis of mucoceles of the maxillary sinus. Of these patients, 131 (99%) had histories of previous maxillary sinus surgery. A number of etiologic mechanisms are probably involved in producing these mucoceles.

In taking a X-ray photography of the head in sagittal projection, it is most important that the center of the X-ray beam passes exactly through the median-sagittal line. If the subject turns his head either to the right or to the left, the paranasal sinuses become denser on one side, leading to erroneous interpretation of the radiographic findings. In order to eliminate such a misinterpretations, studies were carried out on the following: 1) Application of a standard of what degree of head turning to either side would start to influence judgment of the shadow of the paranasal sinuses. 2. Sinus disease in children is usually ethmoidal in location. Acute illness is common and responds well to antibiotics. Sometimes the infection causes ipsilateral orbital cellulitis or rarely an orbital abscess. Systemic administration of antibiotics is usually effective in bringing about resolution. Surgery is not often needed. Acute maxillary sinus disease occurs more often in the older child in the second decade of life. It is manifested by pain in the cheek and teeth, nasal obstruction, and discharge. Treatment with antibiotics is usually effective. For chronic illness, irrigations in most c

The authors examined 11 patients with rhinogenous abscesses of the brain aged from 2 to 45, 5 of them with multiple abscesses. According to their data the infection penetrated into the cranial cavity by two principal ways, namely, contactual (in 2 patients) and hematogenous via venous passages (in 4 patients). Contactual cerebral abscesses of rhinogenous genesis more frequently appear during frontitis, have a lingering chronic course and localize at the pole of the frontal lobe. Clinically they manifest themselves by focal and total cerebral symptoms including craniographic changes of hyperten

The yellow nail syndrome, a combination of yellow discolouration of and dystrophic changes in the nails, pleural effusions and lymphedema, is thought to be relatively rare; to date 44 cases have been reported. Of a further three patients with this syndrome, one had all three features, one had the yellow nails alone and the other had pleural effusions and lymphedema without classic nail changes. Each had recurrent lower respiratory tract infections; and of all 47, chronic pulmonary infections occurred in approximately one quarter and were frequently associated with chronic sinus infections. INTRODUCTION: The diagnostic workup proceeding paranasal sinus surgery routinely includes coronal CT views to get an exact representation of the microanatomy in the region of the lateral nasal wall and the anterior skull base. Axial and sagittal views are often not available, yet they can provide important additional information.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: It was the aim of the current study to analyse multislice CT data sets in order to determine the incidence of anatomical variants. The investigation was performed as a retrospective, monocentrical study on n = 641 patients. Prior paranasal s

Although rare, orbital osteomyelitis secondary to sinusitis can be devastating. Early, aggressive ophthalmologic surgical intervention, as well as otorhinolaryngologic co-management, is necessary to obtain the best outcomes. We present two cases of orbital osteomyelitis. One patient remained infected with Pseudomonas meningitis even after extensive sinus and orbital surgery, rapidly declined, and is now deceased. The other patient, after multiple sinus procedures and a medial orbitotomy, was placed on hyperbaric oxygen and is still undergoing treatment.

OBJECTIVE: Segmentation, the partitioning of patient imaging into multiple, labeled segments, has several potential clinical benefits but when performed manually is tedious and resource intensive. Automated deep learning (DL)-based segmentation methods can streamline the process. The objective of this study was to evaluate a label-efficient DL pipeline that requires only a small number of annotated scans for semantic segmentation of sinonasal structures in CT scans.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
SETTING: Academic institution.
METHODS: Forty CT scans were used in this study inclu
