Resveratrol Delivery from Porous Poly(lactide- co-glycolide) Scaffolds Promotes an Anti-Inflammatory Environment within Visceral Adipose Tissue.

As biomaterial therapies emerge to address adipose tissue dysfunction that underlies metabolic disease, the immune response to these systems must be established. As a potential therapy, we are investigating resveratrol delivery from porous poly(lactide- co-glycolide) scaffolds designed to integrate with adipose tissue. Resveratrol was selected for its ability to protect mice and primates from high fat diet and broad anti-inflammatory properties. Herein, we report fabrication of scaffolds with high resveratrol loading that are stable and active for up to one year. In vitro release profiles indi

Sclerosing mesenteritis diagnosed with computed tomography and ultrasound-guided needle biopsy: the utility of the coaxial technique.

Here we report a case of sclerosing mesenteritis that we diagnosed with needle biopsy under the guidance of computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) observation. An 82-year-old woman presented with appetite loss, weight loss and epigastric pain. CT of the abdomen and pelvis revealed increased density of the mesentery adjacent to the small bowel and enlarged lymph nodes. Sclerosing mesenteritis was suspected, but malignancies, such as lymphoma, were also considered. We performed CT and US-guided needle biopsy with the coaxial technique. An introducer needle was inserted, its correct locatio

IgG4-related sclerosing mesenteritis in a 7-year-old Saudi girl.

Sclerosing mesenteritis (SM) is a rare, benign inflammatory disorder of unknown etiology, affecting the membranes of the digestive tract that involves lymphoplasmacytic inflammation, fat necrosis, and fibrosis of the mesentery. We report a child patient with a history of recurrent abdominal pain and fever who was found to have an intra-abdominal mass suspicious for malignancy. A tissue biopsy revealed the diagnosis of SM associated with IgG4-related systemic disease. The patient is currently maintained on 5 mg prednisone daily and no recurrence of symptoms was noted during the 24-month follow-

Protein-losing enteropathy: first manifestation of sclerosing mesenteritis.

OBJECTIVE: To report the case of an unusual form of protein-losing enteropathy. PATIENT: A 54-year-old patient with hypoechoic tumours resembling lipomas in the mesentery. INTERVENTIONS: Following examination by ultrasound and computed tomography, the well-known intestinal and extra-intestinal forms of protein-losing enteropathy were excluded and a diagnostic laparotomy was performed. The whole mesentery was infiltrated by a large unresectable tumour. Histological examination showed that it was a sclerosing mesenteritis. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Steroid therapy dramatically improved the prote

Arthropathy, skin and bone lesions in pancreatic disease.

A patient with a history of alcoholism and pancreatic calcification, developed subcutaneous fat necrosis and an arthropathy, associated with a pancreatic pseudocyst and accompanied by an elevation of serum lipase and amylase. The illness was complicated by bacteremia and destructive bone lesions. A clinical distinction between osteomyelitis and medullary fat necrosis proved difficult. Infection of bone was demonstrated at one site but did not exclude medullary fat necrosis elsewhere.

One mutation, divergent journeys: expanding the clinical spectrum of homozygous SAMHD1 deficiency in childhood.

OBJECTIVES: Homozygous loss-of-function mutations in SAMHD1 classically cause Aicardi-Goutières syndrome type 5 (AGS5), characterized by neu … dominant presentation without central nervous system involvement, a classical interferonopathy with panniculitis and intracranial calcifications and a lupus-like connective tissue disease phenotype with calcinosis and vasculopathy. Neuroimaging findings ranged from normal to classical AGS features. All patients received Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors, predomina …

Patient and parent perspectives on transition from paediatric to adult healthcare in rheumatic diseases: an interview study.

OBJECTIVES: To describe the experiences, priorities, and needs of patients with rheumatic disease and their parents during transition from p … disease (eg, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, juvenile dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, panniculitis, familial Mediterranean fever) before 18 years of age. Young people were not included if they were diagnosed in the adult setting. RESULTS: We identified four themes with respective subthemes: avoid repeat of past disruption (maintain disease stabi …

Plain radiography is effective for the detection of calcinosis cutis occurring in association with autoimmune connective tissue disease.

BACKGROUND: Studies on the radiological findings of calcinosis cutis in patients with autoimmune connective tissue disease (ACTD) are limite … sease (n = 4); mixed connective tissue disease (n = 3); systemic lupus erythematosus (n = 2); lupus panniculitis (n = 1); overlap connective tissue disease (n = 1); and polymyositis (n = 1). Plain radiographs detected calcinosis in all 37 patients; a nodular pattern of calcification was most commonly observed (31/37; 84%). Two or more morphological patterns of …

Peripheral T-cell and NK-cell lymphomas in the WHO classification: pearls and pitfalls.

Peripheral T-cell and NK-cell lymphomas are functionally, pathologically, and clinically complex. Most nodal T-cell lymphomas belong to the … ociated sites. They can be derived from either αβ or γδ cytotoxic T cells, and include subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma, and enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphomas, both Type I and Type II. Type I enteropathy-associated lymphomas occur in association with celiac disease, whereas Type II lymphomas are more often sporadic. For some T-cell lymphoma …

Feline cutaneous toxoplasmosis: a case report.

A 9-year-old female, domestic short hair cat was presented with sudden onset of polyuria/polydipsia, and hundreds of cutaneous nodules. Prio … on kidneys and mesentery. Histopathology from skin nodules showed diffuse, deep necrotic dermatitis/panniculitis, vasculitis and disseminated free and grouped protozoa. The parasites were found in lungs, spleen, kidneys and liver. Immunohistochemistry on skin tissue with anti-Toxoplasma gondii and Neospora caninum antibodies gave positive results with both. El …

Molecular etiology of mature T-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

T-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) represent approximately 10-15% of all lymphomas diagnosed in Western countries. Significant progress has been made over the last 2 decades in defining non-random chromosomal abnormalities. Cytogenetic and molecular analyses have enhanced diagnostic capabilities as well as improved classification and prognostication for T-cell NHL. Gamma-delta T-cell receptor (TCR) clonality now represents the more common TCR rearrangement in subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma (SCPTCL), hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma (HSTCL), extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal t…
