Effect of age and blood pressure on determination of normal fluid status in a general population using whole body and calf bioimpedance techniques.

Normal fluid status (dry weight) can be identified by hydration markers established in the healthy population. The general population average could be influenced by age with its accompanying physiological changes and/or illness. The aims of this study were (1) to evaluate the effect of age and systolic blood pressure (SBP) on these markers; (2) to compare mean values of hydration markers as assessed by different bioimpedance techniques. Subjects from the general population (n  =  212, males 105, 57.1% White, 31.6% Black, and 11.3% others) were studied. Body weight, height and SBP were measured

What Hispanic parents do to encourage and discourage 3-5 year old children to be active: a qualitative study using nominal group technique.

PURPOSE: Hispanic preschoolers are less active than their non-Hispanic peers. As part of a feasibility study to assess environmental and parenting influences on preschooler physical activity (PA) (Niños Activos), the aim of this study was to identify what parents do to encourage or discourage PA among Hispanic 3-5 year old children to inform the development of a new PA parenting practice instrument and future interventions to increase PA among Hispanic youth. METHODS: Nominal Group Technique (NGT), a structured multi-step group procedure, was used to elicit and prioritize responses from 10 gr

Using the Star Excursion Balance Test to assess dynamic postural-control deficits and outcomes in lower extremity injury: a literature and systematic review.

CONTEXT: A dynamic postural-control task that has gained notoriety in the clinical and research settings is the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT). Researchers have suggested that, with appropriate instruction and practice by the individual and normalization of the reaching distances, the SEBT can be used to provide objective measures to differentiate deficits and improvements in dynamic postural-control related to lower extremity injury and induced fatigue, and it has the potential to predict lower extremity injury. However, no one has reviewed this body of literature to determine the usefuln

The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute retrovirus epidemiology donor studies (Retrovirus Epidemiology Donor Study and Retrovirus Epidemiology Donor Study-II): twenty years of research to advance blood product safety and availability.

The Retrovirus Epidemiology Donor Study (REDS), conducted from 1989 to 2001, and the REDS-II, conducted from 2004 to 2012, were National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute-funded, multicenter programs focused on improving blood safety and availability in the United States. The REDS-II also included international study sites in Brazil and China. The 3 major research domains of REDS/REDS-II have been infectious disease risk evaluation, blood donation availability, and blood donor characterization. Both programs have made significant contributions to transfusion medicine research methodology by the

Adolescents' perceptions about smokers in Karnataka, India.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence of tobacco use among adolescents in India is very high. Despite many epidemiological studies exploring tobacco use among youth, there is no published data on adolescents' perceptions about smokers in Indian society and its implications on tobacco control. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a stratified random sampling with probability proportional to school-type (government or private owned). Data was collected using a pretested, self-administered, anonymous questionnaire with a mix of close and open-ended questions from a sample of 1087 students. Chi-

Escalation of drug use in early-onset cannabis users vs co-twin controls.

CONTEXT: Previous studies have reported that early initiation of cannabis (marijuana) use is a significant risk factor for other drug use and drug-related problems. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the association between early cannabis use and subsequent progression to use of other drugs and drug abuse/dependence persists after controlling for genetic and shared environmental influences. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey conducted in 1996-2000 among an Australian national volunteer sample of 311 young adult (median age, 30 years) monozygotic and dizygotic same-sex twin pairs discordant for early

Treatment of achondroplasia with growth hormone: six years of experience.

We describe the effects of recombinant hGH (r-hGH) therapy for up to 6 y on stature and body proportions of 35 children with achondroplasia (Ach). Consecutive height (Ht) measurements were plotted on disease-specific Ach growth curves, but age and sex SD scores (SDS) of Ht, sitting Ht, subischial leg length, and Ht velocity were made with respect to Tanner normal standards. r-hGH was administered by daily subcutaneous injections at a median (range) dose of 30 (15.8-40) U/m2 per week [0.06 (0.04-0.08) mg.kg(-1).24 h(-1)]. Patients were treated for 3 (1-6) y from age 2.25 (1.2-9.3) y. Before tre

A comparative bibliometric analysis of the top 150 cited papers in hypospadiology (1945-2013).

INTRODUCTION: Hypospadias, the most common congenital malformation of the penis, is characterized by an abnormal ventral opening of the urethral meatus, abnormal ventral curvature of the penis, and an abnormal distribution of the foreskin around the glans, with a ventrally-deficient hooded foreskin, and has been described in modern peer-reviewed literature since Noble's description in 1853. A dramatic increase in the literature on hypospadiology has focused on two main topics: The aetiology of the condition including molecular mechanisms and environmental influences, as well as surgical techni

[Psychopathology related to women pubertal precocity].

INTRODUCTION: Puberty is a developmental process characterized by hormonal and physical changes leading to the ability of reproduction. Precocious puberty, especially in girls, has been associated with an increased incidence of emotional and behavioral problems. Adolescence is a life stage influenced both by the biological changes of puberty and the emergence of new social challenges. In individuals facing these developmental issues at a younger age than expected, the exposure to internal and external stress factors may be greater than in other young people. METHODS: This narrative review pro

Global financing of strabismus surgery: a literature review supported by an international survey.

PURPOSE: Strabismus surgery is a well-established intervention with demonstrated functional and psychosocial benefits, supported by extensive clinical and economic literature. Despite this evidence, reimbursement policies remain highly heterogeneous worldwide, often influenced by the persistent ambiguity between functional and cosmetic indications. A comprehensive synthesis of existing cost data, combined with real-world reimbursement practices, is required to better understand barriers to equitable access to care. METHODS: We conducted a targeted literature review to identify published data

Developmental challenges in infants who are HIV-exposed uninfected.

INTRODUCTION: The global HIV epidemic continues to affect millions of people and significantly affects children. Approximately 16 million children born to HIV-positive women, categorized as HIV-exposed uninfected (HEU), face unique developmental hurdles despite not contracting the virus. These children are more likely to experience developmental issues due to factors such as exposure to maternal HIV, antiretroviral therapy (ART), nutritional shortages, and adverse social conditions. Research indicates that children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected (HEU) may have subpar neurodevelopmental out

Assessing Community and Social Media Influence to Increase Influenza Vaccine Uptake among Youth in Soweto, South Africa (The Bambisana Study): Protocol for a Mixed Methods Pretest-Posttest Intervention Study.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal influenza has an estimated global reach of 3-5 million infections, with 290,000-650,000 influenza-related deaths yearly. Despite its efficacy in reducing morbidity and mortality, influenza vaccination rates remain low globally and in South Africa. Youth between the ages of 18 and 34 years are not prioritized for influenza vaccines although influenza surveillance in South Africa shows that individuals aged 19-44 years present the highest asymptomatic episodes and the lowest medically attended illness. This creates an opportunity to investigate if and how vaccine demand can

The Impact of Patient-Generated Health Data From Mobile Health Technologies on Health Care Management and Clinical Decision-Making: Narrative Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND: Long-term health conditions and multimorbidity are increasing globally, placing an unsustainable pressure on health care systems. Mobile health (mHealth) technologies enable the collection of patient-generated health data outside clinical settings, offering the potential to support personalized care and inform clinical decision-making. However, the ways in which mHealth patient data are being used in clinical practice remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to map and synthesize the existing literature on how patient-generated mHealth data are reportedly being used and influen

Association of collective attitudes and contraceptive practice in nine sub-Saharan African countries.

BACKGROUND: There is ample evidence that gender norms affect contraceptive practice; however, data are mostly qualitative with limited geographical scope. We investigated that association quantitatively using collective community-level attitudes towards premarital sex and wife-beating as proxies for gender norms. METHODS: Data came from nationally representative Demographic and Health Surveys (2005-2009) for women of reproductive age (15-49 years) in nine sub-Saharan African countries. Using multilevel logistic models, controlling for individual covariates and community-level indicators of wo

Men's knowledge, attitudes and behaviours relating to fertility.

BACKGROUND: The increasingly common practice in high-income countries to delay childbearing to the fourth and fifth decades of life increases the risk of involuntary childlessness or having fewer children than desired. Older age also increases the risk of age-related infertility, the need for ART to conceive, and obstetric and neonatal complications. Existing research relating to childbearing focusses almost exclusively on women, and in public discourse declining fertility rates are often assumed to be the result of women delaying childbearing to pursue other life goals such as a career and tr

Counseling in the clinical setting to prevent unintended pregnancy: an evidence-based research agenda.

Unintended pregnancies account for about half of all pregnancies in the United States and, in 1995, numbered nearly 3 million pregnancies. They pose appreciable medical, emotional, social and financial costs on women, their families and society. The US is not attaining national goals to decrease unintended pregnancies, and little is known about effective means for reducing unintended pregnancy rates in adults or adolescents. To examine the evidence about the effectiveness, benefits and harms of counseling in a clinical setting to prevent unintended pregnancy in adults and adolescents and to use
