Harm reduction-focused behavioral activation for people who inject drugs: Mixed methods outcomes from a pilot open trial.

INTRODUCTION: People who inject drugs (PWID) experience high rates of mental health problems and drug-related harms. Harm reduction-focused interventions aim to reduce harms associated with drug use and are an important approach for engaging people who are not seeking traditional abstinence-focused treatment. Yet, few studies to date have examined the effectiveness of harm reduction psychosocial treatment for drug use. We evaluated the outcomes of a harm reduction-focused behavioral activation (BA) intervention from pretreatment to a 1-month follow-up. METHODS: A total of N = 23 PWID (65.2 %

How Does Religiosity Influence Gambling? A Cross-Cultural Study Between Portuguese and English Youth.

Research has shown that religion can play a protective role in diverse risky behaviors among young people. However, very little is known about the effect of religion in gambling, especially among young problem gamblers. A strong moral belief regarding gambling may prevent adolescents and young adults engaging in gambling and developing problems. Nevertheless, some evidence suggests that religion might have an influence on gambling cognitive distortions (i.e., some religious beliefs might influence the conceptions of chance and luck, which may contribute to an increase in gambling participation

Managing precocious puberty: A necessity for psychiatric evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: Precocious puberty (PP) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in school-age girls. It has been reported that there is an increased tendency for psychiatric disorders for early maturing girls. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of psychiatric problems and to investigate depression and anxiety levels, and self-concept characteristics in girls with PP. METHODS: Girls with PP (n = 41) and controls (n = 45) aged 7-11 years participated in this study. Psychiatric evaluations were conducted with semi-structured interviews. Behavioral and emotional problems were

Quantifying the dynamic nature of vagal responsivity in infancy: Methodological innovations and theoretical implications.

According to polyvagal theory, rapid modulation of the vagal brake develops early in infancy and supports social interactions. Despite being viewed as a dynamic system, researchers typically assess vagal regulation using global measures of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA; an index of vagal tone). This study sought to capture the dynamic property of RSA and evaluate individual differences in within-infant RSA responsivity during mother-infant interaction. RSA was evaluated in a sample of 135 6-month-old Mexican-American infants during a 5-min free play task. Mothers reported on their children

The negative consequences of hypersexuality: Revisiting the factor structure of the Hypersexual Behavior Consequences Scale and its correlates in a large, non-clinical sample.

INTRODUCTION: Despite the growing literature about hypersexuality and its negative consequences, most studies have focused on the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STI's), resulting in relatively few studies about the nature and the measurement of a broader spectrum of adverse consequences. METHODS: The aim of the present study was to examine the validity and reliability of the Hypersexual Behavior Consequence Scale (HBCS) in a large, non-clinical population (N = 16,935 participants; females = 5854, 34.6%; Mage  = 33.6, SDage  = 11.1) and identify its factor structure across genders. Pre-menarche pubertal development following unique form of immigration: the case of girls adopted from China.

Our study tested the hypothesis that drastic social-cultural change has an impact on girls' pre-menarche pubertal development. We focused on a unique group of Chinese immigrants who migrated out of China in infancy through international adoption. Our sample included 298 Chinese girls who were 7.3-11.1 years in 2011 (Mean = 8.8, SD = 0.9) and were adopted at 7-24 months (Mean = 12.6, SD = 3.4). We found that 34% showed at least one of four signs of pubertal development: Growth spurt, body fat increase, breast development, and body hair. Logistic regression analyses showed that the odds of growt

Social impressions while drinking account for the relationship between alcohol-related problems and social anxiety.

Individuals with elevated social anxiety appear particularly vulnerable to experiencing alcohol-related problems; yet we know little about factors that may account for this relationship. One possibility is that socially anxious individuals hold beliefs about the impressions they make on others while drinking and these beliefs play an important role in their drinking behaviors. The present study used exploratory factor analysis among participants with clinically elevated social anxiety (n=166) to develop a measure, the Social Impressions while Drinking Scale (SIDS), to assess beliefs regarding

School, neighborhood, and family factors are associated with children's bullying involvement: a nationally representative longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether school, neighborhood, and family factors are independently associated with children's involvement in bullying, over and above their own behaviors that may increase their risk for becoming involved in bullying. METHOD: We examined bullying in the Environmental Risk (E-Risk) Longitudinal Twin Study, a nationally representative 1994-1995 birth cohort of 2,232 children. We used mother and teacher reports to identify children who experienced bullying between the ages of 5 and 7 years either as victims, bullies, or bully-victims. We collected information about school char

Leisure behavior of youth with short stature, delayed puberty and diabetes mellitus.

There is some evidence to suggest that adolescents with endocrinological disorders such as short stature (SS), delayed puberty (DP), or diabetes mellitus (DM) may display significant social or psychological problems. The purpose of our study was to examine the leisure behaviors and experiences of these adolescents. Of the 178 adolescents (all of whom had an endocrinological problem) 83 were male and 91 were female. We found the leisure behaviors and experiences of adolescents with SS, DP and DM (the group) were similar to adolescents with other endocrine disorders (comparison group) and to sev

Development of the psychopathology instrument for Mentally Retarded Adults-Sexuality Scale (PIMRA-S).

Little research or attention has been focused on identifying sexual problems or difficulties that people with mental retardation commonly experience. Scale development represents an important area for study to help identify these problems and to evaluate treatment outcome. To address this need, the Psychopathology Instrument for Mentally Retarded Adults-Sexuality Scale (PIMRA-S) was designed to assess psychosexual disorders in mild and moderate mentally retarded persons. Eighty-six mild and moderately mentally retarded adults, ages 20 to 60, were studied using the PIMRA-S. Scale development of

Internalizing and Externalizing Pathways From Polyvictimization to Adult Risky Sexual Behavior: The Roles of Timing and Chronicity.

Although the association between youth victimization and risky sexual behaviors (RSB) is well established, the developmental timing and pathways through which polyvictimization contributes to young adult RSB are unclear. This study prospectively examined the respective impacts of childhood and adolescent polyvictimization (i.e., physical abuse, sexual abuse, and witnessed family and community violence) on young adult RSB (i.e., sex under the influence and past-year number of sexual partners; MAge = 23.78), and whether internalizing/externalizing problems at age 18 mediate these associations. Sensory over-responsivity in elementary school: prevalence and social-emotional correlates.

Sensory over-responsivity (SOR) towards tactile and auditory input can impact children's participation in academic and social activities; however the prevalence of SOR behaviors and their relation to social-emotional problems and competence has not been rigorously studied. This study investigated SOR in a representative sample of elementary school-aged children (n = 925, 50% boys, ages 7-11 years) who were followed from infancy. Sixteen percent of parents reported that at least four tactile or auditory sensations bothered their children. Being bothered by certain sensations was common while ot

Direct social support for young high risk children: relations with behavioral and emotional outcomes across time.

This study is unique in addressing developmental correlates of direct social support for young children in a high risk sample, in contrast to previous studies addressing social support for caregivers. Participants were drawn from a prospective, longitudinal study of at-risk children. Social support was rated from maternal interviews throughout early childhood. Support from the mother was assessed from mother-child observations. Outcomes included internalizing and externalizing behavior problems measured from first through tenth grades. The most common support providers were biological fathers,
