Sensory evoked potentials in patients with Rett syndrome through the lens of animal studies: Systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Systematically review the abnormalities in event related potential (ERP) recorded in Rett Syndrome (RTT) patients and animals in search of translational biomarkers of deficits related to the particular neurophysiological processes of known genetic origin (MECP2 mutations). METHODS: Pubmed, ISI Web of Knowledge and BIORXIV were searched for the relevant articles according to PRISMA standards. RESULTS: ERP components are generally delayed across all sensory modalities both in RTT patients and its animal model, while findings on ERPs amplitude strongly depend on stimulus properties a

Metabolite and functional profile of patients with cervical spondylotic myelopathy.

OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to compare the recovery of neuronal metabolism and functional reorganization in the primary motor cortex (M1) between mild and moderate cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) following surgical intervention. METHODS Twenty-eight patients with CSM underwent 3-T MRI scans that included spectroscopy and functional MRI, before surgery and 6 months postsurgery. The classification of severity was based on the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association questionnaire. Mild and moderate myelopathy were defined by modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores > 12 o

Integrity of central nervous function in diabetes mellitus assessed by resting state EEG frequency analysis and source localization.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with structural and functional changes of the central nervous system. We used electroencephalography (EEG) to assess resting state cortical activity and explored associations to relevant clinical features. Multichannel resting state EEG was recorded in 27 healthy controls and 24 patients with longstanding DM and signs of autonomic dysfunction. The power distribution based on wavelet analysis was summarized into frequency bands with corresponding topographic mapping. Source localization analysis was applied to explore the electrical cortical sources underlyi

Prognostic value of globus pallidus internus volume in primary dystonia treated by deep brain stimulation.

OBJECT: Given that improvement is variable from one patient to another, the authors analyzed the impact of globus pallidus internus (GPi) volume on the result of deep brain stimulation (DBS) by comparing highly and less improved patients with primary dystonodyskinetic syndromes. METHODS: A stereotactic model was developed to visualize and quantify the relationship between the isofield lines generated by the DBS lead and GPi target. The model was used in 30 right-handed selected patients with primary dystonodyskinetic syndromes who had been treated using bilateral stimulation of the sensorimot

It is best known for suppressing T-cel … lation of B7-H3 was observed at both the mRNA and protein levels and was localized primarily to the somatosensory cortex and caudate putamen in the ipsilateral (ischemic) hemisphere, the main regions affected in this MCAO model. Mapping the secondary response to traumatic brain injury using spatial transcriptomics shows acute 4-aminopyridine treatment mitigates axonal and molecular pathology.

Damage to long myelinated axons of white matter tracts is a hallmark pathology resulting from traumatic brain injury (TBI) forces and second … gnatures to tissue pathology. TBI increased axonal injury response genes in the CC and in motor and somatosensory cortex sites of CC projection neurons. TBI induced disease-associated glial phenotypes that mapped predominantly within the CC. TBI increased pathway expression for immune and vascular functions, neuron and glial cell signaling, and cellular dyshomeostasis …

Brain network functional connectivity changes induced by music-induced analgesia in fibromyalgia patients.

Music can liberate positive power of pain management in fibromyalgia (FM) patients through multiple neural modulation. However, traditional brain research preferred to investigate the neural characteristics of music-induced analgesia (MIA) based on the seed points of functional activation, which limits the understanding of the connection states of the whole-brain functional synchronization network involved in FM's music listening. The current study aimed to investigate the whole-brain network functional connectivity (FC) differences of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (RS-fM

BACKGROUND: Sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) occurs in 99% of all cases and can be influenced by air pollution such as diesel emissions and … short-term memory impairment in AD-prone mice. Neuronal cell loss was shown in the hippocampal and somatosensory cortex, with increased detection of Aβ plaque, the latter only in the AD-predisposed mice, with the wild-type not genetically disposed to form the plaque. The particle exposures however, increased AD-relevant immune system responses, including inflammation …

Cerebral haemodynamic response to somatosensory stimulation in preterm lambs is enhanced following sildenafil and inhaled nitric oxide administration.

Background: Neurovascular coupling (NVC) leads to an increase in local cerebral blood flow and oxygenation in response to increased neural activity and metabolic demand. Impaired or immature NVC reported in the preterm brain, potentially reduces cerebral oxygenation following increased neural activity, predisposing to cerebral tissue hypoxia. Endogenous nitric oxide (NO) is a potent vasodilator and a major mediator of NVC and the cerebral haemodynamic response. NO modulators, such as inhaled nitric oxide (iNO) and sildenafil, induce vasodilation and are used clinically to treat pulmonary hyper

Neural Correlates of Sleep Recovery following Melatonin Treatment for Pediatric Concussion: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Evidence-based treatments for children with persistent post-concussion symptoms (PPCS) are few and limited. Common PPCS complaints such as sleep disturbance and fatigue could be ameliorated via the supplementation of melatonin, which has significant neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aims to identify neural correlates of melatonin treatment with changes in sleep disturbances and clinical recovery in a pediatric cohort with PPCS. We examined structural and functional neuroimaging (fMRI) in 62 children with PPCS in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of

Distinct cortical activity patterns in Parkinson's disease and essential tremor during a bimanual tapping task.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET) are neurodegenerative diseases characterized by movement deficits. Especially in PD, maintaining cyclic movement can be significantly disturbed due to pathological changes in the basal ganglia and the cerebellum. Providing external cues improves timing of these movements in PD and also affects ET. The aim of this study is to determine differences in cortical activation patterns in PD and ET patients during externally and internally cued movements. METHODS: Eleven PD patients, twelve ET patients, OFF tremor suppressing medication,

Insular multiple sclerosis lesions are associated with erectile dysfunction.

Erectile function (EF) is frequently compromised in men with multiple sclerosis (MS). Functional neuroimaging in healthy men identified a network of brain areas, such as the insula, visual and somatosensory association areas, cingulate gyrus, prefrontal cortex, as well as subcortical regions, contributing to EF. This study intended to determine associations between EF deterioration during MS and cerebral MS-associated lesion sites. In 31 men with MS (mean age 38.2 ± 11.2 years), we evaluated MS-related EF deterioration by comparing scores of the 5-item International Index of Erectile Function-
