BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a neglected soil-transmitted helminth that occurs worldwide, though it is particularly endemic in tropical and subtropical areas. It can cause long-lasting and potentially fatal infections due to its ability to replicate within its host. S. stercoralis causes gastrointestinal and dermatological morbidity. The objective of this study was to assess the S. stercoralis infection risk and, using geostatistical models, to predict its geographical distribution in Cambodia.
METHODOLOGY / PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A nation-wide, community-based parasitological survey

Strongyloides stercoralis (SS) hyperinfection is a well-documented condition. However, SS eggs in stool samples are not commonly observed during routine analysis. Here, we report a case on SS hyperinfection where both larvae and eggs were observed in the stool sample of an immunossupressed liver allograft transplanted patient.

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of Strongyloides stercoralis (S. stercoralis) infection is hampered by the suboptimal sensitivity of fecal-based tests. Serological methods are believed to be more sensitive, although assessing their accuracy is difficult because of the lack of sensitivity of a fecal-based reference ("gold") standard.
METHODS: The sensitivity and specificity of 5 serologic tests for S. stercoralis (in-house IFAT, NIE-ELISA and NIE-LIPS and the commercially available Bordier-ELISA and IVD-ELISA) were assessed on 399 cryopreserved serum samples. Accuracy was measured using fecal result

Accumulating evidence suggests that IL-9-mediated immunity plays a fundamental role in control of intestinal nematode infection. Here we report a different impact of Foxp3⁺ regulatory T cells (Treg) in nematode-induced evasion of IL-9-mediated immunity in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. Infection with Strongyloides ratti induced Treg expansion with similar kinetics and phenotype in both strains. Strikingly, Treg depletion reduced parasite burden selectively in BALB/c but not in C57BL/6 mice. Treg function was apparent in both strains as Treg depletion increased nematode-specific humoral and cellular

Post-treatment soil-transmitted helminth re-infection patterns were studied as part of a randomized controlled trial among school-aged children from an ethnic minority group in Yunnan province, People's Republic of China. Children with a soil-transmitted helminth infection (N = 194) were randomly assigned to triple-dose albendazole or placebo and their infection status monitored over a 6-month period using the Kato-Katz and Baermann techniques. Baseline prevalence of Trichuris trichiura, Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, and Strongyloides stercoralis were 94.5%, 93.3%, 61.3%, and 3.1%, respectiv

It is estimated that 30-100 million people are infected with the pathogenic nematode Strongyloides stercoralis worldwide but parasite control is still based on anti-helminthic treatment. To develop protective vaccination strategies, we use the murine model of Strongyloides ratti infection. We have shown recently that vaccination with alum-precipitated, but not with native or CFA-emulsified S. ratti heat shock protein 60 (srHSP60) conferred protection to challenge infection. Here we describe the generation of a monoclonal IgM specific for srHSP60. Anti-srHSP60 detected human and srHSP60 and sta

We conducted cross-sectional surveys of parasites infecting a large free-living colony of baboons at the Southwest National Primate Research Center in San Antonio in October 2003 and April 2004, immediately before, and 6 mo after, treatment with ivermectin. Trichuris sp. was the predominant species present, infecting 79 and 69% of individual animals in the 2 surveys, with fecal egg counts (FEC) of up to 60,200 eggs per g (epg) (mean = 1,235 in October 2003 and 1,256 in April 2004). Prevalence remained fairly stable across age groups, and intensity was highest in animals <1 or >15 yr old, in co

In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the infection and subsequent immunity induced by Strongyloides venezuelensis in Lewis rats. Animals were infected with 4000 L3 of S. venezuelensis and number of eggs per gram of faeces indicated an acute phase around day 8 and a recovery phase around day 32 after infection. A strong Th2 polarization during recovery phase was ascertained by a significant increase in IgG1 and IgE compared with that in the acute period. A shift in the cytokine profile confirmed these findings. A predominant production of IFN-gamma during the acute phase was fo

An estimated quarter of the world's population possesses an infection caused by gastrointestinal nematodes, which induce a Th2 type immune response. Concomitant infection of nematodes with Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which induces a predominantly Th1 type response, is very frequent in tropical and subtropical regions. This study examined immune responses of BALB/c mice infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis and then co-infected with Mycobacterium bovis. The number of worms in the intestine, eggs in feces, cytokine production in lungs and intestine and the expression of CD80, CD86, CTLA-4 an

Strongyloides stercoralis is a nematode endemic in tropical and subtropical regions. In immunocompetent subjects, pulmonary disease caused by the parasite is unremarkable but the same can be life threatening in immunocompromised subjects. Though described in literature it is rarely seen in Indian subjects. We report a patient with ARDS due to Strongyloides stercoralis complicating non-Hodgkin's lymphoma with neutropenia.

A key requirement for several theories involving the evolution of sex and sexual selection is a specificity between host and parasite genotypes, i.e. the resistance of particular host genotypes to particular parasite genotypes and the infectivity of particular parasite genotypes for particular host genotypes. Determining the scope and nature of any such specificity is also of applied relevance, since any specificity for different parasite genotypes to infect particular host genotypes may affect the level of protection afforded by vaccination, the efficacy of selective breeding of livestock for

BACKGROUND: We studied a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected adults in Uganda who were not receiving antiretroviral therapy, to explore the impact of helminths on HIV progression in areas where antiretrovirals are not available.
METHODS: A total of 663 patients were screened for helminths, treated presumptively with albendazole and selectively with praziquantel, and monitored for 6 months. Blood samples were analyzed for CD4+ cell count and HIV-1 RNA.
RESULTS: Schistosoma mansoni, hookworm, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Mansonella perstans were the most prevalent helminths

We present a female patient from Somalia with an acute lymphoblastic leukemia, who received an allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and developed several periods of moderate to severe pulmonary symptoms that were accompanied by pulmonary infiltrates and peripheral blood eosinophilia. After several recurrences an open lung biopsy was performed, which initially gave rise to the diagnosis parasitic infection. Later on this diagnosis was questioned and it was suggested that the structures were artifacts that might have been aspirated. Nevertheless, after the immediately given antihelminthi

The immunodepression, related or not to AIDS, induces the emergence of opportunistic parasitosis and mycosis. Our objective is to analyze these pathogenic agents, their clinical expression and gravity in immunocompromised individuals. Our retrospective 9 years study reported parasitic and fungic infections complicating immunodepression. Among 31 HIV infected patients, we diagnosed the following parasitosis: Cryptosporidium (7 cases), Isospora belli (2 cases) and Enterocytozoon bieneusi (1 case). Pulmonary pneumocystosis was diagnosed in 6 cases, cerebral toxoplasmosis in 6 cases and meningo-ce

A practical approach to the interpretation of peroral small intestinal biopsy specimens is presented. Biopsy technique and tissure handling are described. Interpretation of normal and abnormal biopsy specimens is discussed. A practical classification of abnormal small intestinal biopsies is presented and illustrated.
