[Double-bundle reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament using hamstring auto graft under arthroscopy].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinical effects of double-bundle reconstruction of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) using hamstring tendon auto graft under arthroscopy. METHODS: From April 2009 to March 2010, 25 patients (13 males and 12 females) with ACL deficiency were treated with arthroscopy, ranging in age from 17 to 43 years, with an average of 25.8 years. There were 17 patients caused by sports injuries, 6 patients caused by accidental falling, and 2 patients caused by traffic injury. The average duration of the disease was 3 months. The main symptom was knee instability in 8 patients, and

Corrosive esophageal injuries in children. A shortlived experience in Sierra Leone.

OBJECTIVE: Children with caustic ingestions in developing countries are often treated at home, sometimes by traditional healers, or are referred, frequently late, to tertiary hospitals, which only seldom offer adequate endoscopic and dilatation facilities. Therefore, when dilatations are performed, the stricture is often already well established, making dilatation more difficult. The aim of this paper is to report our experience in the management of corrosive injuries in a group of children of Sierra Leone, all complaining accidental ingestion of caustic soda, many of them treated months after

Permanent impairments, disabilities and disability pensions related to accidents in Norway.

The purpose of this study was to estimate the burden of accidents in terms of new disability pensioners related to accidental injuries in Norway and to use this information to supplement the picture of the epidemiology of accidents in Norway. The basis of the study was 7,241 new disability pensioners due to accidents in the Disability Register of the National Insurance Administration in Norway for 1992-1997. Included in the analyses are some data from health surveys in USA and Norway. The rate of disability pensioners (16-66 years old) due to accidents increased 4% annually during 1992-1997, a…

Development of clinical decision support for patients older than 65 years with fall-related TBI using artificial intelligence modeling.

BACKGROUND: Older persons comprise most traumatic brain injury (TBI)-related hospitalizations and deaths and are particularly susceptible to fall-induced TBIs. The combination of increased frailty and susceptibility to clinical decline creates a significant ongoing challenge in the management of geriatric TBI. As the population ages and co-existing medical conditions complexify, so does the need to improve the quality of care for this population. Utilizing early hospital admission variables, this study will create and validate a multinomial decision tree that predicts the discharge disposition

An Epidemiologic Review of Maxillofacial Trauma: A 3-Decade Experience in a Tertiary Medical Center.

INTRODUCTION: The epidemiology of facial fractures varies across populations, with limited local data on facial skeleton injuries in Israel. Understanding etiology and epidemiology is crucial for health care development, surgeon training, and injury prevention. OBJECTIVE: The authors analyzed facial skeleton fractures treated at the Department of Oral and Craniomaxillofacial Surgery at Chaim Sheba Medical Center between 2006 and 2015, comparing results with the 1985 to 2005 period. Presenting and analyzing the significant experience of a large tertiary medical center with facial bone trauma o

Circulating neurodegenerative brain injury markers and hip fracture and fall hospitalizations: the Cardiovascular Health Study.

Individuals with dementia have a heightened hip fracture and fall risk but whether markers of brain injury are associated with hip fracture and falls is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that higher circulating brain injury markers were associated with increased risk of hip fracture and fall hospitalizations. Brain injury markers were measured in 2141 participants (mean age 77.9 yr; 60% women). Brain injury markers included neurofilament light chain (NfL), a marker of axonal injury; glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), a marker of astrocytic injury; total Tau, whose many functions include n

Association of benzodiazepines, opioids and tricyclic antidepressants use and falls in trauma patients: Conditional effect of age.

INTRODUCTION: The relationship between benzodiazepines, opioids and tricyclic antidepressants and trauma is of great importance because of increased consumption and the growing evidence of a positive association among older adults. The objective of this study was to determine the effect size of the association between the consumption of psychotropic medications /opioids and falls in patients who have suffered trauma by studying the role of other variables in this relationship. METHOD: From 2011 to 2016, the presence of benzodiazepines, opioids and tricyclic antidepressants and other drugs in

[Respiratory failure and neurological impairment in a child with Duchenne muscular dystrophy following minor trauma].

Fat Embolism Syndrome (FES) is a rare and often lethal condition, associated with trauma or surgery. It is more serious than a typical fat embolism seen after a fracture in a long bone. FES is a triad of symtoms, including respiratory failure, abnormal neurology and petechial bleeding. FES is a diagnosis of exclusion. The incidence of FES is higher among adults compared to children. One possible explanation for this is the greater proportion of fat in the adult bone marrow. Children with Duchennes muscular dystrophy have a significantly increased risk of FES compared to both other children and

Elbow instability following lateral collateral ligament complex avulsion fracture and joint interposition: an uncommon presentation.

The lateral collateral ligament (LCL) complex of the elbow is a capsuloligamentous structure, critical for elbow stability. Though isolated ligamentous injuries have been reported in literature, there are no studies reporting avulsion fractures of the lateral ligamentous complex of the elbow with joint incarceration in a child. An 11-year-old boy presented to the emergency department after a fall from height, with pain and swelling to the lateral side of his left elbow. Radiographs established a fracture of the lateral condyle and CT imaging confirmed an avulsion of the lateral ligamentous com

The value of musculoskeletal ultrasound in geriatric care and rehabilitation.

The WHO reports that one of the major chronic conditions affecting the elderly worldwide is musculoskeletal disorders that are associated with long-term pain and disability. Considering the healthcare needs of the elderly (i.e. comprehensive, accessible, efficient) and the advantages of ultrasound (US) use (patient-friendly, convenient, cost-effective, and does not require exposure to radiation or magnetic fields), there seems to be a 'gap' in the actual clinical practice. In this paper, we aimed to highlight the potential value of US imaging in the management of the elderly with a wide spectr

A man with severe leg burns.

A 52-year-old Hispanic male was transported to the emergency department after sustaining severe bilateral lower extremity burns in an electroplating factory. His examination revealed circumferential burns to the lower extremities with spotting in the perineum. The epidermis was stained green and sloughed off with gentle pressure. The underlying dermis was white and non-blanching, consistent with a full thickness burn. His feet were partially protected by his work boots where he had small areas of pink, blanchable, partial thickness burns (Fig. 1). Pertinent initial studies included a lactic ac
