Necrotic Enteritis in Broiler Chickens: The Role of Tight Junctions and Mucosal Immune Responses in Alleviating the Effect of the Disease.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) continues to present major challenges to the poultry industry, and the etiologic agent Clostridium perfringens is the fourth leading cause of bacterially-induced food- borne illnesses in the US. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of a probiotic during naturally occurring NE. On day of hatch, 1080 Cobb 500 male broilers were randomly allocated to three groups (12 replicate pens/treatment, 30 birds/pen) including 1) negative control (NC): corn-soybean meal diet; 2) positive control (PC): NC + 20 mg virginiamycin/kg diet (0.450 kg Stafac®20/ton); and 3) N

Tissue-based Immunohistochemical Biomarker Accuracy in the Diagnosis of Malignant Glandular Lesions of the Uterine Cervix: A Systematic Review of the Literature and Meta-Analysis.

Immunohistochemistry is widely used to support a pathology diagnosis of cervical adenocarcinoma despite the absence of a systematic review and meta-analysis of the published data. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed to investigate the sensitivity and specificity of immunohistochemistry biomarkers in the tissue-based diagnosis of cervical adenocarcinoma histotypes compared with normal endocervix and benign glandular lesions. The systematic review and meta-analysis used a PICOT framework and QUADAS-2 to evaluate the quality of included studies. The literature search spanned 40

A robust model of natural hepatitis C infection using hepatocyte-like cells derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells as a long-term host.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) could induce chronic liver diseases and hepatocellular carcinoma in human. The use of primary human hepatocyte as a viral host is restrained with the scarcity of tissue supply. A culture model restricted to HCV genotype 2a (JFH-1) has been established using Huh7-derived hepatocyte. Other genotypes including the wild-type virus could not propagate in Huh7, Huh7.5 and Huh7.5.1 cells. METHODS: Functional hepatocyte-like cells (HLCs) were developed from normal human iPS cells as a host for HCV infection. Mature HLCs were identified for selective hepatocyte mark

Human Amnion Epithelial Cells Modulate Ventilation-Induced White Matter Pathology in Preterm Lambs.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants can be inadvertently exposed to high tidal volumes (VT) during resuscitation in the delivery room due to limitations of available equipment. High VT ventilation of preterm lambs produces cerebral white matter (WM) pathology similar to that observed in preterm infants who develop cerebral palsy. We hypothesized that human amnion epithelial cells (hAECs), which have anti-inflammatory and regenerative properties, would reduce ventilation-induced WM pathology in neonatal late preterm lamb brains. METHODS: Two groups of lambs (0.85 gestation) were used, as follows: (1)

Analysis of Varicella-Zoster Virus in Temporal Arteries Biopsy Positive and Negative for Giant Cell Arteritis.

IMPORTANCE: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is the most common systemic vasculitis in elderly individuals. Diagnosis is confirmed by temporal artery (TA) biopsy, although biopsy results are often negative. Despite the use of corticosteroids, disease may progress. Identification of causal agents will improve outcomes. Biopsy-positive GCA is associated with TA infection by varicella-zoster virus (VZV). OBJECTIVE: To analyze VZV infection in TAs of patients with clinically suspected GCA whose TAs were histopathologically negative and in normal TAs removed post mortem from age-matched individuals. Gut bacterial isolates from individuals with Alzheimer's disease induce strain-specific intestinal, inflammatory, and neurobehavioral phenotypes in mice.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder in which alterations in the microbiota-gut-brain axis has been increasingly investigated. However, the effects of individual cultivable bacterial isolates recovered from individuals with AD on host intestinal and neurobehavioral phenotypes remain insufficiently characterized. In this study, three bacterial isolates, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Citrobacter pasteurii, were recovered from fecal samples collected from individuals diagnosed with AD and evaluated in healthy BALB/c mice following long-term oral admi

Study of Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Ameliorates Colon Morphology and Microbiota Function in High-Fat Diet Mice.

This study investigates whether fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) can alleviate gut microbiota dysbiosis induced by a high-fat diet (HFD) through modulation of fatty acid metabolism, competition for nutrients, production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), and restoration of mucus layer integrity. To elucidate the mechanisms by which FMT regulates colonic microbial function and host metabolic responses, 80 male Bal b/c mice were randomly assigned to four experimental groups (n = 20 per group): Normal Diet Group (NDG), High-Fat Diet Group (HDG), Restrictive Diet Group (RDG), and HDG recipi

Effect of pre-weaning glycyl-glutamine feeding on diarrhea rate, hindgut fermentation, antioxidant stress capability, and fecal microbiota in calves.

Glycyl-glutamine (Gly-Gln, GQ) is formed by the dehydration-condensation reaction of glycine and glutamine. Different studies have shown a positive effect of GQ on gut health and growth performance in early neonatal animals. We evaluated oral GQ effects in Holstein calves on growth (body weight, average dairy gain), fecal score, diarrhea rate, serum biomarkers (antioxidants/inflammation/biochemistry/amino acids), and hindgut parameters (fermentation and microbiota). Twenty-two neonatal Holstein heifer calves (1-5 d of age; 36.93 ± 1.052 kg) from multiparous dams were randomly divided into cont
