Progressive bone marrow failure starting in the first decade of life is one of the main characteristics of Fanconi anemia. Along with the bone marrow failure, this pathology is characterized by congenital malformations, endocrine dysfunction and an extraordinary predisposition to develop cancer. To reduce wear rates and particulate debris, highly cross-linked polyethylene has been in use in total hip arthroplasty for 8 years. We designed this followup study to primarily determine the total penetration rate of the femoral head and the steady-state wear rate of cross-linked polyethylene in patients undergoing primary total hip arthroplasty. Leishmaniasis causes significant morbidity and mortality in areas where it is endemic. A seroprevalence survey was conducted in 2 endemic villages in Daraa, Syrian Arab Republic, where 80 out of 345 children (23.2%) tested positive for visceral leishmaniasis (VL) using rK39 dipstick test. Only 10 cases were symptomatic (12.5%), and 27.5% were positive by ELISA test. All the sera (N = 138) obtained from the control village were negative. We previously reported that insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II) stimulated clonal growth of an erythroleukemia cell line, K562, in semi-solid agar, an effect not mimicked by insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), as IGF-I receptors are generally not expressed in this cell line. Because insulin-like growth factor type I (IGF-I) is reputed to be involved in the endometrial decidualization, we analyzed the expression of IGF-I receptors in an in vitro system of human endometrial stromal cells. Casein kinase-II (CK-II) is a widely distributed protein kinase, which plays numerous roles in the regulation of transcription through modification of transacting transcription factors. The mutants irs1, irs2 and irs3 were previously isolated from the Chinese hamster line V79-4 on the basis of their hypersensitivity (2-3-fold) to cell inactivation by X-rays. In this study we have characterized the cell surface interleukin 1 (IL-1) receptor in HepG2 hepatoma cells. We found that HepG2 cells bind both IL-1 alpha and beta with high affinity, KDs of 136 and 180 pM and receptor densities of 16,000 and 8500 binding sites/cell respectively.
