Pregnancy is a significant risk factor for the development of restless legs syndrome (RLS). Apart from its negative impact on sleep and general quality of life, RLS is also associated with pregnancy complications and negative outcomes. To elucidate the prevalence, trajectory, severity, and risk factors of RLS throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period, we analyzed data from the multicenter Life-ON Cohort Study (NCT02664467), which recruited 439 pregnant women in the 10th-15th gestational week and followed them up until 12 months after delivery. About 26.03% of women (n = 113, 95% CI = 22.0

INTRODUCTION: Perinatal women often experience mood disorders and postpartum depression due to the physical load and the rapid changes in hormone levels caused by pregnancy, childbirth, and nursing. When the mother's emotions become unstable, their parental behavior (maternal behavior) may decline, the child's attachment may weaken, and the formation of mother-child bonding can become hindered. As a result, the growth of the child may be adversely affected. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ω3 fatty acid deficiency in the perinatal period on maternal behavior and the

BACKGROUND: Stillbirth has been associated with emotional and psychologic symptoms. The association between stillbirth and diagnosed postpartum psychiatric illness is less well-known.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether women have a higher risk of experiencing clinician-diagnosed psychiatric morbidity in the year after stillbirth vs livebirth.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort study used International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification diagnosis and procedure codes to identify participants, exposures, and outcomes within the Florid

Psychiatric disorders are equally common among pregnant and non-pregnant women, and many of these conditions are treated with psychotropic medications. The use of psychotropic medicines during pregnancy, especially antidepressants, became increasingly prevalent in the early 2000's, although many physicians prefer not to prescribe drugs for pregnant women due to concerns about teratogenicity. Current data on the risks of in utero exposure to psychotropic medications are limited, leaving women and physicians to make difficult decisions regarding the initiation or maintenance of treatment during

Conjugated linoleic acid, a long-chain fatty acid, reduces milk fat content in dairy cows, which may alleviate the negative energy balance during the early lactation period by reducing lactation energy output and thereby decreasing the occurrence of ketosis and fatty liver due to a negative energy balance. Although research has revealed the milk fat inhibition mechanism, the mechanisms underlying the metabolic interactions among the liver, subcutaneous fat, and mammary gland tissues during this period remain unclear. In this study, the molecular mechanisms underlying CLA-induced milk fat depre

To summarize the available evidence in the literature regarding the effects of exposure to an enriched environment (EE) on the modulation of apoptotic markers in central tissue of rodents under unfavorable conditions. Searches were conducted in three databases: PubMed/Medline (70 articles), Scopus (65 articles), and EMBASE (128 articles), all of which were subjected to eligibility criteria. Of the 263 articles found, 95 duplicates were removed. After evaluating the title and abstract, 147 studies were excluded, leaving 21 articles, 16 of which were included in this systematic review. Peripartum depression (PPD) represents one of the most prevalent and disabling psychiatric conditions among women, yet its underlying biology remains poorly integrated across medical disciplines. Emerging evidence highlights PPD as a prototypical disorder of the heart-brain axis, where neuroendocrine changes, immune activation, and cardiovascular dysregulation converge to shape maternal vulnerability. During pregnancy and the postpartum period, abrupt fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone (P4), and placental corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) interact with a sensitized hypothalamic-pituita

Ischemic stroke is a major cause of mortality and disability and has become a significant public health concern among women. Overall, women have more ischemic stroke events than men, in part due to their longer life span, and also suffer from more severe stroke-related disabilities compared to men. Women are also more likely than men to present with atypical non-focal neurological symptoms, potentially leading to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Female-specific risk factors, especially those related to pregnancy, are often under-recognized. A woman's risk for ischemic stroke evolves throughout

Type A γ-aminobutyric acid receptors (GABAARs) are the principal inhibitory receptors in the brain and the target of a wide range of clinical agents, including anaesthetics, sedatives, hypnotics and antidepressants1-3. However, our understanding of GABAAR pharmacology has been hindered by the vast number of pentameric assemblies that can be derived from 19 different subunits4 and the lack of structural knowledge of clinically relevant receptors. Here, we isolate native murine GABAAR assemblies containing the widely expressed α1 subunit and elucidate their structures in complex with drugs used

BACKGROUND: Infants discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) dependent on medical technology (eg, respiratory or nutritional support) are a growing vulnerable population. These infants are medically fragile, prone to emergency department visits and readmissions, and require increased caregiver demands at home. The experiences of their maternal caregiver's after NICU discharge however, are not well understood.
PURPOSE: This qualitative descriptive study addressed this knowledge gap by interviewing mothers of technology-dependent infants about their experience during their first

This study sought to update knowledge on unsafe abortion in Brazil. We carried out a systematic review with study search and selection on MEDLINE and LILACS, with no language restriction, from 2008 to 2018. We evaluated article quality using the Joanna Briggs Institute instruments. We evaluated 50 articles. The prevalence of induced abortion in Brazil was estimated by a direct method to be 15% in 2010 and 13% in 2016. Higher prevalences were observed in more socially vulnerable populations. There was a decrease in the ratio of induced abortions by 1,000 women of reproductive age in the period

Although the influence of advanced maternal age (AMA) and delayed childbearing on adverse maternal and perinatal outcomes has been studied extensively, no universal consensus on the definition of AMA exists. This terminology currently refers to the later years of a woman's reproductive life span and generally applies to women age ≥35 years. AMA increases the risk of pregnancy complications, including ectopic pregnancy, spontaneous abortion, fetal chromosomal abnormalities, congenital anomalies, placenta previa and abruption, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and cesarean delivery. OBJECTIVE: This study examined the prevalence and correlates of Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder (ASAD) and Adult Separation Anxiety (ASA) symptoms in a sample of first-time mothers with an unsettled infant during the first postpartum year.
METHODS: Eighty-three primiparous women admitted to a residential parent-infant program participated in a structured clinical interview for DSM-IV diagnosis and questionnaires assessing ASA symptoms, adult attachment and childhood parenting experiences. Nurses recorded infant behavior using 24-hour charts.
RESULTS: The prevalence of ASAD in this sample w

BACKGROUND: To date few studies have examined how multiple layers of influences shape the emergence of bed-sharing practices in the first 2 years postpartum. In our report, we examined bed-sharing in a large multiethnic sample, exploring the influences of three broad classes of influence on bed-sharing at single time points and across time: (1) sociodemographic and (2) contextual factors such as breastfeeding, maternal mental health and stress, and (3) child temperament and sleep habits.
METHODS: Frequencies of bed-sharing were assessed at two time points, 2 and 24 months, in a population-bas

Taiwan society is today typified by low birth rates amongst Taiwanese and a rising number of children born to immigrant and trans-cultural marriage families. Unhealthy behavior and anxiety on the part of pregnant women increase postpartum depression and complications and negatively affect neonatal heath. Such may further negatively impact upon romantic feelings between the new parents and the nascent parent-child relationship. New parenting education is a proactive and innovative strategy that may be used to improve maternal and child health. Therefore, it is worthy to explore how best to achi

Perioperative neurocognitive disorders (PNDs) affect a large percentage of people who undergo surgeries that need general anesthesia. There is an increased risk of death and a major disruption to postoperative self-care as a result of this. This study compiles all the relevant materials that the authors have found to investigate postnatal depression and its causes, as well as the methods used to determine the probability and severity of PNDs and how to reduce their risk before surgery. Postnatal depression can have many causes, and this text explores some of them. These include a history of al

Postpartum psychiatric disorders represent a significant public health problem that has not been readily addressed, particularly in the primary care setting. As maternal mood and anxiety difficulties are associated with a number of adverse outcomes for the mother, her offspring and the family system, addressing these concerns during the perinatal period is of critical importance. Although researchers and clinicians have become increasingly aware of the problem, postpartum mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) remain widely unrecognized and poorly understood by both patients and providers. As pedi
