IMPORTANCE: To highlight the advantages of the vertical midline incision in providing satisfactory cosmesis with complete excision of pediatric nasofrontal dermoid cysts.
OBSERVATIONS: Retrospective case series of nasofrontal dermoid cysts in 4 patients treated at a single tertiary medical center from June 1, 2010, through July 31, 2012. The mean age at surgery was 2.5 years. The anatomical location of the nasofrontal dermoid cysts differed: (1) supratip extending through the upper lateral cartilages to the cartilaginous septum, (2) upper dorsum and subcutaneous tissue, (3) tip and supratip e

BACKGROUND: Growth inhibition of the ossification center, "the external trabecular network," would result in localized hypoplasia of nasomaxillary structures, resulting in the typical features of the Binder syndrome patient, with the retracted columella/lip junction and a lack of the normal triangular flare in the lower part of the columella. This study focused on a long-term follow-up of more than 5 years for three different grafting techniques.
METHODS: Ninety-two patients with Binder syndrome were subjects for consecutive reconstructive plastic surgery between 1972 and 1995. The primary su

A case of alveolar soft-part sarcoma with multiple cerebral metastases in addition to multiple lung and bone metastases is reported. This is a rare tumor which thus far has only been recognized as a malignant soft tissue tumor with great uncertainty. A 24-year-old man with a chief complaint of left frontal headache was admitted to our unit on September 26, 1994. A tumor of the right forearm had been surgically removed 9 years previously, and surgery had been followed by two courses of chemotherapy with vincristine, cyclophosphamide and actinomycin-D and subsequent irradiation for bone metastas

Transorbital penetrating brain injury is rare during this time of peace. In our paper, we reported seven cases of these injuries and discussed the mechanism and treatment of intracranial complications. Transorbital penetrating brain injuries were caused by thin, long and relative hard objects such as chop-stick (case 3), pencil (case 6), bamboo stick (case 1, 2, 7) and a piece of metal (case 4, 5). CT scan, MRI and angiography demonstrated a large variety of intracranial complications. For instance, intracerebral hematoma, cerebral contusion, intraventricular hemorrhage, pneumocephalus, brain

We report a case in which a 71-year-old man with a giant cell glioblastoma who had a spontaneous intracerebral hematoma including subarachnoid hemorrhage and extraneural multiple metastases followed by the craniotomy 9 months later. He had complained of nausea and vomiting on 20, October, 1981 and admitted to the Ohara hospital. For that reason, he was admitted to our hospital on 29, October, 1981 and a CT scan showed a large subcortical high dence mass accompanied by adjacent edema in the right frontal lobe. Gradually he got worse with Korsakoff's syndrome and motor weakness of the left side.

INTRODUCTION: Computer navigation plays an increasingly important role in craniomaxillofacial surgery. The difficulties in computer navigation at the craniomaxillofacial site lie in the accurate transmission of the dataset to the operating room. This study investigates the accuracy of the dental-splint registration method for the skull, midface, and mandible.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A synthetic human skull model was prepared with landmarks and scanned with cone beam computer tomography (CBCT). Two registration splints fixed the mandible against the viscerocranium in two different positions (clo

The objectives of this study were to investigate the treatment effect and stability of fronto-facial monobloc distraction osteogenesis. Five consecutive patients who underwent monobloc distraction were included (aged 4.8-18.4 years). Three patients had Crouzon syndrome, one had Apert syndrome, and one had Pfeiffer syndrome. The evaluation included clinical records, serial cephalograms for at least 1-year follow up (average 24.6 months). The treatment and post-treatment changes were measured. The intracranial volume, upper airway volume and globe protrusion were calculated from CT before and af

BACKGROUND: Encephalocele is a pathological condition characterized by the herniation of intracranial contents through a cranial bone defect. Although most cases are congenital, traumatic encephaloceles can occur following blunt head injury, surgical interventions, or other acquired causes. These lesions are clinically significant due to their association with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage and the risk of life-threatening meningitis. Traumatic encephaloceles in children are exceedingly rare, particularly those involving the fronto-ethmoidal region.

Tropidosuchus romeri is a member of the clade Proterochampsidae (non-Archosauria Archosauriformes) collected from Upper Triassic (lower Carnian) outcrops of the Chañares Formation of the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin (La Rioja Province, Argentina). This species is a non-rhadinosuchine proterochampsid known from several specimens, including almost complete skeletons. Here, we describe and compare in detail the skull of T. romeri based on direct observation of specimens and the three-dimensional segmentation of one of them based on computed microtomography scans. Ciliopathies are rare congenital disorders caused by defects in the structure or function of cilia, which can lead to a wide range of clinical manifestations. Among them, a subset known as skeletal ciliopathies exhibits significant phenotypic overlap and primarily affects skeletal development. This group includes several syndromes with overlapping but distinct clinical features, such as short-rib polydactyly syndrome (SRPS), Jeune asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (JATD), Mainzer-Saldino syndrome (MZSDS), and cranioectodermal dysplasia (CED), also called Sensenbrenner syndrome. The most characte

BACKGROUND: Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a benign, slowly progressive disease resulting from the replacement of normal bone by fibro-osseous tissue. The incidence of craniofacial involvement of FD is as high as 23%. Sinonasal involvement of FD may lead to obstruction of the natural sinus ostium, resulting in acute sinusitis. We present a rare case of sinonasal FD complicated by subperiosteal abscess that was removed by bicoronal incision and frontal-basal approach in the second surgery.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old male patient presented with painful swelling on his left eye that had persiste

Radiation-induced sarcoma (RIS) is an unusual but well documented tumor. The frequency of RIS of the head and neck region has been reported as 0.143%. In the literature the median interval between irradiation and development of sarcoma is 11 years. Cases of RIS with a short latent period, that is, less than 4 years are rare. We report a case of a 34-year-old female who developed an osteosarcoma of the scalp, over a previous craniotomy scar, 3 years after excision of a frontal anaplastic oligodendroglioma which had been followed by a course of 6 weeks radiotherapy (58 Gy) and 6 cycles of temozo

PURPOSE: Reconstruction of large craniofacial defects has largely improved since custom-made implants have been developed in the past decade. For large lesions in fronto-orbital region (such as osteomeningioma), we applied a simple and reliable protocol to perform optimal primary reconstruction with PEEK (polyetheretherketone) specific implant at the same time of the resection.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Our protocol is based on virtual preoperative surgery with a planned bone resection that allows engineering of a specific implant to accurately fit to the defect during the surgery. Thus tumour re

UNLABELLED: The optic nerve injury is produced by damaging the optic nerve within a craniocerebral trauma. The anatomo-pathology and the pathology of posttraumatic visual impairments are fundamental data for the therapeutic indications. The microscopic examination reveals only the particular cases of very serious or severe extensive lesions. Damage to the vessels of the optic nerve, damage and break of the optical fibers are responsible for immediate visual impairments and secondary hematomas and edemas involving. The factors for the late appearance of visual impairments are numerous and often

We report our experience with the subcranial approach, developed at the Plastic Surgery Unit of Hospital "Ricardo Gutiérrez," for the treatment of injuries in the frontoethmoidal orbital region in pediatric patients. The subcranial approach was described by Raveh et al for the treatment of fractures in the frontoethmoidal area. The subcranial approach was used later for surgery of tumors and deformities of the frontoethmoidal region. We have used this approach in nine cases of nontraumatic injuries (one meningioma, one orbital bone fibrous dysplasia, one vascular malformation, five nasal dermo
