Heterogeneity among Mycobacterium avium complex species isolated from pulmonary infection in Taiwan.

Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is an emerging pathogen causing nontuberculous pulmonary infections globally. However, clinical treatment guidelines regard MAC as a single entity, recommending a universal anti-mycobacterial combination therapy. Our study aimed to distinguish species among MAC and investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility for the selection of optimal antimicrobial agents in Taiwan. Two hundred ninety-four consecutive sputum samples confirmed as MAC by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry were collected from 1 November 2015 to 31 Augu

Tolerance of clinical vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium isolates against UV-C light from a mobile source.

BACKGROUND: Admission to a room previously occupied by patients carrying environmentally robust pathogens implies an increased risk of acquiring those pathogens. Therefore, 'No-touch' automated room disinfection systems, including devices based on UV-C irradiation, are discussed to improve terminal cleaning. It is still unclear if clinical isolates of relevant pathogens behave differently under UV-C irradiation compared to laboratory strains used in the approval process of disinfection procedures. In this study we analysed the susceptibility of well characterized clonally divergent vancomycin-

High fluoroquinolone resistance proportions among multidrug-resistant tuberculosis driven by dominant L2 Mycobacterium tuberculosis clones in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

BACKGROUND: Multidrug-resistant (MDR) Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) strains are a serious health problem in India, also contributing to one-fourth of the global MDR tuberculosis (TB) burden. About 36% of the MDR MTBC strains are reported fluoroquinolone (FQ) resistant leading to high pre-extensively drug-resistant (pre-XDR) and XDR-TB (further resistance against bedaquiline and/or linezolid) rates. Still, factors driving the MDR/pre-XDR epidemic in India are not well defined. METHODS: In a retrospective study, we analyzed 1852 consecutive MTBC strains obtained from patients from a

Phenotypic detection, antimicrobial susceptibility and virulence profile of staphylococci in the pig production setting, Makurdi, Nigeria.

Livestock, particularly pigs, have increasingly been recognized as important reservoirs for zoonotic transmission of pathogenic bacteria, including staphylococci. Livestock production systems in developing countries of sub-Saharan Africa, including Nigeria, are characterized by high misuse/abuse of antimicrobials and a close association between humans and these animals, which promotes the emergence and transmission of resistant and potentially virulent bacteria. In the present study, we investigated the occurrence and characteristics (species distribution, virulence and resistance profile) of

Pharmacokinetics of Telavancin in Adult Patients with Cystic Fibrosis during Acute Pulmonary Exacerbation.

Adults with cystic fibrosis (CF) frequently harbor Staphylococcus aureus, which is increasingly antibiotic resistant. Telavancin is a once-daily rapidly bactericidal antibiotic active against methicillin-, linezolid-, and ceftaroline-resistant S. aureus Because CF patients experience alterations in pharmacokinetics, the optimal dose of telavancin in this population is unknown. Adult CF patients (n = 18) admitted for exacerbations received 3 doses of telavancin 7.5 mg/kg of body weight (first 6 patients) or 10 mg/kg (final 12 patients) every 24 h (q24h). Population pharmacokinetic models with a
