[Evaluation of the curative effect of functional endoscopic sinus surgery by acoustic rhinometry].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the curative effect of Functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS) who suffered with chronic rhinosinusitis by acoustic rhinometry. METHOD: We collected 60 patients who accepted FESS for chronic rhinosinusitis, and calculated the mean minimal cross-sectional area (MCSA), nasal volume (NV), nasal airway resistance (NAR) by acoustic rhinometry within endoscopy to estimate the curative effect of FESS. RESULT: Four weeks after FESS, the patients' ethmoid sinus, maxillary sinus, frontal sinus and sphenoid sinus were clear by endoscopy. Meanwhile, the mean MCSA and NV by acoust

Bacteriology of postradiotherapy chronic rhinosinusitis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients and chronic rhinosinusitis.

The purpose of this study was to investigate and compare the bacteriology of postradiotherapy chronic rhinosinusitis (postRT-CRS) and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) by evaluating the aspiration materials of the maxillary sinus of patients with postRT-CRS and patients with CRS. We collected the secretions of the maxillary sinus from 30 nasopharyngeal carcinoma patients with postRT-CRS and 30 patients with CRS for aerobe/facultative anaerobe bacteria culture. The most common isolates in the postRT-CRS group were Streptococcus viridans, Staphylococcus aureus and Haemophilus influenzae, while those

Endoscopic sinus surgery for antrochoanal polyps in children.

OBJECTIVE: The antrochoanal polyp (ACP) occurs predominantly in children and young adults. Endoscopic surgery is effective for the treatment of ACPs in adults; however, articles discussing the treatment in pediatric patients are rare. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcome of endoscopic treatment of ACPs in children. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: Between January 1998 and February 2004, 26 children were prospectively enrolled in this study. Completely removing the base of the ACPs was achieved through transnasal endoscopic (TE) or combined endoscopic and transcanine (CET) approach.

Otolaryngic manifestations of myiasis.

Although rare in North America and Europe, myiasis is seen occasionally in tropical and undeveloped countries. This disorder results from the penetration of a fly larva into a part of the human body, and it causes various symptoms in the host. The exposed areas of the skin are the ones predominantly affected and the eyes, ears, nose, and paranasal sinuses are less commonly affected. We review our experience with 12 patients with myiasis of the ears, nose, and paranasal sinuses.

Sinusitis in children.

Sinusitis is common in allergic children. We are now aware that the commonest presentation of this disorder in the pediatric age group is persistent cough and purulent rhinorrhea. Headache and facial tenderness, frequently noted in adults with sinusitis, are not common. Much remains to be learned about diagnostic techniques and therapy of sinusitis. Nasal cytology can be valuable for discriminating between allergic and infectious disease, but lacks both sensitivity and specificity. Although there is a high correlation between radiographs showing significant sinus membrane thickening or cloudin

Sinusitis of dental origin.

Acute or chronic sinusitis may be odontogenic. Bacteria involved in odontogenic sinusitis are specific organisms associated with the teeth (Streptococcus sanguis, Streptococcus salivarius, Streptococcus mutans, anaerobic germs). They are often secondary to an intrasinus foreign body following periodontitis. The treatment is both naso-sinusal and dental. Cysts of the maxilla can also invade the sinus. In particular, radiculo-dental cysts (periapical) must be surgically excised, in some cases associated with a middle meatotomy. Finally, one should look for oro-antral fistulae. The surgical techn

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery for Type-2 CRS wNP: An Endotype-Based Retrospective Study.

OBJECTIVES: Nasal polyps are often characterized by type 2 inflammation and disease recurrence. We developed a new surgical technique, referred to as reboot approach, which aims to maximally remove all sinus mucosa and allow healthy re-epithelialization from the preserved nasal mucosa. We here review type 2 endotype chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) patients who underwent classical mucosa-sparing endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) or the reboot approach. METHODS: Retrospective case-control study of 50 consecutive CRSwNP patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery between 2015

Pituitary Adenomas Presenting as Sinonasal or Nasopharyngeal Masses: A Case Series Illustrating Potential Diagnostic Pitfalls.

We present a series of nonectopic pituitary adenomas presenting as polypoid sinonasal or nasopharyngeal masses. Thirteen cases diagnosed by biopsies from the nasal cavity, sinuses, or nasopharynx were identified from a series of 1288 surgical pituitary specimens. The patients included 5 men and 8 women ranging from 29 to 69 years of age. The presentations included nasal obstruction (4 cases), headaches (3), visual defects (2), recurrent nose bleeds (1), rhinorrhea (1), sepsis (1), fatigue (1), and hyperthyroidism (1). All patients had large tumors involving the sella and extending inferiorly t

A rare case report of mixed olfactory neuroblastoma: Carcinoma with review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare malignant neuroectodermal tumor of the nasal cavity. Mixed olfactory neuroblastoma which contains areas of divergent differentiation is even rare. Till date, only 4 cases of mixed olfactory neuroblastomas have been reported. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 46-year-old male who presented with the chief complaints of nasal bleeding and nasal obstruction since 4 months. Radiological imaging was suggestive of a large heterogeneous mass in the left superior nasal cavity with extensions into bilateral maxillary, ethmoidal, and sphenoidal

Hemostatic agent microporous polysaccharide hemospheres (MPH) does not affect healing or intact sinus mucosa.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Absorbable hemostatic agents are used routinely following sinus surgery. Recent studies suggest that current biomaterials, such as FloSeal Matrix Hemostatic Sealant (Fusion Medical Technologies, Mountain View, CA) may interfere with mucosal regeneration. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Microporous Polysaccharide Hemospheres (MPH, Medafor, Inc., Minneapolis, MN), a novel rapidly-absorbing hemostatic powder, on healing and intact sinus mucosa. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled study using the rabbit model. METHODS: Both maxillary sinuses of 14 New

Nasal sinuses cholesteatoma: case series and review of the English literature.

BACKGROUND: Nasal sinus cholesteatomas are uncommon slow-growing lesions that are frequently misdiagnosed preoperatively. They can develop due to embryologic remnants or iatrogenic factors (surgical trauma or nasal sinus trauma). In addition, they can cause bone destruction resulting in intracranial or intraorbital complications as well as malignant change if neglected. Complete surgical removal is a must with strict postoperative follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three cases of nasal sinus cholesteatoma are reported. The first case was found inside the ethmoidal sinus, the second in the fron

Spectrum of Sinonasal Tumors: A 10-year Experience at a Tertiary Care Hospital in North India.

OBJECTIVE: Sinonasal tumors are a highly heterogeneous group of tumors that account for less than 1% of all cancers. Precise diagnosis is essential because the natural history, treatment, and prognosis vary for different neoplasms. We reviewed 610 cases of sinonasal lesions to understand this entity better. METHODS: A total of 610 sinonasal biopsies/specimens were received over a period of 10 years (2004-14). All the samples were processed and stained with hematoxylin and eosin. Special staining for microorganisms and immunohistochemistry were performed where indicated. RESULTS: Benign lesio

Evaluation of children with chronic rhinosinusitis after adenotonsillectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), defined as an inflammatory process involving the paranasal sinuses that continues for at least three months, is a major cause of morbidity in the pediatric population and a difficult entity to treat with a poorly defined pathophysiology. The cornerstone of treatment for children with CRS remains aggressive antibiotic therapy, but many patients fail to improve even after extended courses of broad-spectrum oral antibiotics. However, good treatment results with adenoidectomy alone have been reported in pediatric patients with CRS. The purpose of this st
