The present review summarizes findings in our continuing study of the use of low-power laser irradiation (LPLI) in the treatment of severely injured peripheral (PNS) and central nervous systems (CNS). AIMS: To report on the use of multi-dose photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of posterior uveal melanoma.
METHODS: Prospective case series. 18 patients with posterior uveal melanoma were treated with a minimum of three sessions of PDT. Mean tumour thickness was 1.92 mm (median 1.75, range 0.5-4.4 mm) while the mean basal diameter was 7.1 mm (median 6.3, range 5.2-11 mm). BACKGROUND: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is characterized by loss of central vision and is the leading cause of blindness among persons over the age of 50 years in Canada. The wet form of AMD has 3 subtypes-occult, minimally classic, and predominantly classic. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) with verteporfin is indicated only for the category of predominantly classic wet AMD. Currently, there are no treatments available for the other AMD subtypes. Pegaptanib sodium was the first pharmacologic therapy approved in Canada for the treatment of subfoveal wet AMD regardless of subtype.
