Attention, memory, and behavioral adjustment in children with frontal lobe epilepsy.

To explore whether attention, memory, and behavior would be more affected in children with frontal lobe epilepsy than in children with other types of epilepsy, we compared 16 children with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE), 8 with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and 8 with generalized absence (GEA) seizures on the Performance Speed (PS) and Freedom of Distraction (FD) indices of the WISC-III, the Continuous Performance Test (CPT), the California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT), and Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure (ROCF). Parents completed Achenbach's Child Behavior Check List. Children with FLE scored signi

Hormones, emotional dispositions, and aggressive attributes in young adolescents.

Relations among hormone levels, emotional dispositions, and aggressive attributes were examined in 56 boys and 52 girls, age 9 to 14 years. The adolescents represented all 5 stages of pubertal development. Serum levels of gonadotropins, gonadal steroids, adrenal androgens, and testosterone-estradiol binding globulin were assessed. Levels of these hormones were related to stage of pubertal development and were assumed to represent relatively stable biological characteristics. The emotional dispositions assessed were adolescent self-reported anger, nervousness, sadness, and impulse control. The

Neurobiological, familial and genetic risk factors for dimensional psychopathology in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a key period for brain development and the emergence of psychopathology. The Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study was created to study the biopsychosocial factors underlying healthy and pathological brain development during this period, and comprises the world's largest youth cohort with neuroimaging, family history and genetic data. METHODS: We examined 9856 unrelated 9-to-10-year-old participants in the ABCD study drawn from 21 sites across the United States, of which 7662 had multimodal magnetic resonance imaging scans passing quality control, and

Classroom behavior of very low birth weight elementary school children.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of birth weight on the classroom behavior of children during elementary school (N = 1120; mean age = 9.16 years). DESIGN: The study used an inception cohort. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: Participants were from two previously studied multi-site cohorts: very low birth weight (VLBW) children referred to participating intensive care units and heavier low birth weight (HLBW) children from a stratified random sample of births in geographically defined regions. Teacher reports of children's behavior were obtained for 80% of those eligible. Information was obtained for 137

Network analysis of monoamines involved in anxiety-like behavior in a rat model of osteoarthritis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a major health problem that affects a significant number of patients, resulting in personal suffering and substantial health care costs. One of the most commonly reported causal conditions is osteoarthritis (OA). In addition to sensory symptoms, chronic pain shares an inherent overlap with mood or anxiety disorders. The involvement of the frontal cortex, striatum and nucleus accumbens, in the affective processing of pain is still poorly understood. METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups: MIA (monoiodoacetate injected into the knee-model of OA) and s

[Adverse childhood experiences and health problems in adulthood: A retrospective cross-sectional study].

INTRODUCTION: Individuals who have had adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) tend to have more health problems as adults. They are also at higher risk of adopting health-risk behaviors, further increasing the risk of negative health outcomes and premature death. This study aimed to assess the associations between ACEs, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), health problems, and health-risk behaviors in adulthood according to the number and nature of ACEs among Iceland's general population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study among 12,400 individuals aged 18-80

Self-control problems in Intermittent Explosive Disorder: Presentation of an explanatory approach.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Intermittent Explosive Disorder (IED) is an impulsive aggression disorder with self-control problems. However, the mechanisms underpinning the self-control problems in IED have not been clearly investigated. Therefore, this study examined the nature of self-control problems and their types, including cognitive inhibition, behavioral inhibition, and emotional interference in IED. METHODS: Participants included three groups: IED (n = 54), psychiatric control (n = 59), and healthy control (n = 62). They were first screened with SCL-90-R, and then they were clinically i

Neural correlates of proactive avoidance deficits and alcohol use motives in problem drinking.

Physical pain and negative emotions represent two distinct drinking motives that contribute to harmful alcohol use. Proactive avoidance, in contrast, can reduce consumption in response to these motives but appears to be impaired in those with problem drinking. Despite such evidence, proactive avoidance and its underlying neural deficits have not been assessed experimentally. How these deficits inter-relate with drinking motives to influence alcohol use also remains unclear. The current study leveraged neuroimaging data in forty-one problem and forty-one social drinkers who performed a probabil

Universal and Selective Interventions to Prevent Poor Mental Health Outcomes in Young People: Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Much is not known about the efficacy of interventions to prevent poor mental health outcomes in young people by targeting either the general population (universal prevention) or asymptomatic individuals with high risk of developing a mental disorder (selective prevention). METHODS: We conducted a PRISMA/MOOSE-compliant systematic review and meta-analysis of Web of Science to identify studies comparing post-test efficacy (effect size [ES]; Hedges' g) of universal or selective interventions for poor mental health outcomes versus control groups, in samples with mean age <35 years (PR

Cost-effectiveness analysis of parenting interventions for the prevention of behaviour problems in children.

BACKGROUND: Behavior problems are common among children and place a high disease and financial burden on individuals and society. Parenting interventions are commonly used to prevent such problems, but little is known about their possible longer-term economic benefits. This study modelled the longer-term cost-effectiveness of five parenting interventions delivered in a Swedish context: Comet, Connect, the Incredible Years (IY), COPE, bibliotherapy, and a waitlist control, for the prevention of persistent behavior problems. METHODS: A decision analytic model was developed and used to forecast

Genomic studies in fragile X premutation carriers.

BACKGROUND: The FMR1 premutation is defined as having 55 to 200 CGG repeats in the 5' untranslated region of the fragile X mental retardation 1 gene (FMR1). The clinical involvement has been well characterized for fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) and fragile X-associated primary ovarian insufficiency (FXPOI). The behavior/psychiatric and other neurological manifestations remain to be specified as well as the molecular mechanisms that will explain the phenotypic variability observed in individuals with the FMR1 premutation. METHODS: Here we describe a small pilot study of co

[Epidemiologic research, disorders of eating behavior and addictive behavior].

The tremendous increase in interest in eating disorders, and especially in bulimia nervosa, that has occurred since the last 1970s has resulted in a large and contradictory literature about the relationships between eating disorders and addictive disorders, especially alcohol and drug abuse. At first sight, according to the differences observed between these disorders in most of their phenomenological characteristics (age, sex, socio-cultural factors), it may seem difficult to draw a parallel between them. However, studies showed that eating behavior problems, alcohol and drug abuse nowadays s

Psychiatric behavioral effect and characteristics of type 2 diabetes mellitus on Japanese patients with Prader-Willi syndrome: a preliminary retrospective study.

OBJECTIVES: In recent years, research on behavioral and psychiatric problems of adults with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) has gained attention. However, no report is available regarding the relationship between psychiatric illness and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in patients with PWS. Therefore, we evaluated a behavioral assessment to address the lack of data on the association between psychiatric behavior and T2DM. METHODS: This was a retrospective single-center study of patients with PWS. Patients with PWS whose blood tests were performed in our hospital between January 2018 and December 2

Prematurity may negatively impact means-end problem solving across the first two years of life.

Preterm infants are at risk for delays in motor, perceptual, and cognitive development. While research has shown preterm infants may exhibit learning delays in the first months of life, these delays are commonly under-diagnosed. The purpose of this study was to longitudinally evaluate behavioral performance and learning in two means-end problem-solving tasks for 30 infants born preterm (PT) and 23 born full-term (FT). Infants were assessed at 6, 9, 12, 18, and 24 months-old in tasks that required towel pulling or turntable rotation to obtain a distant object. PT infants performed more non-goal

Behavioral disturbance and treatment strategies in Smith-Magenis syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Smith-Magenis syndrome is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that includes intellectual deficiency, speech delay, behavioral disturbance and typical sleep disorders. Ninety percent of the cases are due to a 17p11.2 deletion encompassing the RAI1 gene; other cases are linked to mutations of the same gene. Behavioral disorders often include outbursts, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorders, self-injury with onychotillomania and polyembolokoilamania (insertion of objects into body orifices), etc. Interestingly, the stronger the speech delay and sleep disorders, the more severe t
