During development of the mammalian brain, many neural precursor cells (NPCs) undergo apoptosis. The regulation of such cell death, however, is poorly understood. We now show that the survival of mouse embryonic NPCs in vitro was increased by culture at a high cell density and that this effect was attributable to activation of Notch signaling. Guanylyl cyclase C (GCC) is the receptor for the family of guanylin peptides and bacterial heat-stable enterotoxins (ST). The receptor is composed of an extracellular, ligand-binding domain and an intracellular domain with a region of homology to protein kinases and a guanylyl cyclase catalytic domain. Chemical cross-linking was used to study the interactions of the anti-cell-death protein Bcl2 with other proteins in the outer mitochondrial membrane.
