All you need to know about gastrinoma today | Gastrinoma and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: A thorough update.

Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (ZES) is a distinct syndrome characterized by hyperchlorhydria-induced peptic ulcer disease and chronic diarrhea. … include atrophic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori)-associated pangastritis, renal failure, vagotomy, gastric outlet obstruction and retained antrum syndrome. The secretin stimulation test and the calcium gluconate injection test represent classic adjuvant diagnostic techniques, while alternative approaches are currently being introduced and evalua …

The common hepatic branch of the vagus is not required to mediate the glycemic and food intake suppressive effects of glucagon-like-peptide-1.

The incretin and food intake suppressive effects of intraperitoneally administered glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) involve activation of GLP-1 receptors (GLP-1R) expressed on vagal afferent fiber terminals. Central nervous system processing of GLP-1R-driven vagal afferents results in satiation signaling and enhanced insulin secretion from pancreatic-projecting vagal efferents. As the vast majority of endogenous GLP-1 is released from intestinal l-cells following ingestion, it stands to reason that paracrine GLP-1 signaling, activating adjacent GLP-1R expressed on vagal afferent fibers of gastr

Effects of inhalation anesthetics on parasympathetic reflex vasodilation in the lower lip and palate of the cat.

The present experiments were designed to examine the effects of inhalation anesthetics (isoflurane, halothane, and sevoflurane) on the parasympathetic reflex vasodilation in the lower lip and palate elicited by electrical stimulation of the central cut end of the lingual nerve in vagosympathectomized cats. Isoflurane (1.5%), halothane (1.0%), and sevoflurane (2.5%), each at a concentration of 1.0 minimum alveolar concentration, markedly suppressed the evoked blood flow increases in the lower lip, whereas nitrous oxide (70% in 30% oxygen) and morphine (2 mg/kg iv) did not. Prior administration

The central sympatho-inhibitory effect of 5,6-dihydroxy-2-dimethylaminotetralin (M7) is mediated by alpha 2-adrenoceptors.

M7 (5,6-dihydroxy-2-dimethylaminotetralin) produces in anesthetized rats a hypotensive response previously attributed to peripheral dopaminergic mechanisms. We re-examined the effects of this drug on arterial blood pressure, heart rate and sympathetic nerve activity in anesthetized rats and dogs. M7 (1-100 micrograms/kg i.v.) produced in the rats transient dose-dependent pressor effects, with bradycardia and sympatho-inhibition, followed by long-lasting dose-dependent hypotension, bradycardia and sympatho-inhibition. The sympatho-inhibitory and hypotensive effects were comparable in barorecept

Pain-free survival after vagoglossopharyngeal complex sectioning with or without microvascular decompression in glossopharyngeal neuralgia.

OBJECTIVE: Glossopharyngeal neuralgia (GN) is a rare pain condition in which patients experience paroxysmal, lancinating throat pain. Multiple surgical approaches have been used to treat this condition, including microvascular decompression (MVD), and sectioning of cranial nerve (CN) IX and the upper rootlets of CN X, or a combination of the two. The aim of this study was to examine the long-term quality of life and pain-free survival after MVD and sectioning of the CN X/IX complex. METHODS: A combined retrospective chart review and a quality-of-life telephone survey were performed to collect

Intermittent Hypoxia-Induced Spinal Inflammation Impairs Respiratory Motor Plasticity by a Spinal p38 MAP Kinase-Dependent Mechanism.

Inflammation is characteristic of most clinical disorders that challenge the neural control of breathing. Since inflammation modulates neuroplasticity, we studied the impact of inflammation caused by prolonged intermittent hypoxia on an important form of respiratory plasticity, acute intermittent hypoxia (three, 5 min hypoxic episodes, 5 min normoxic intervals) induced phrenic long-term facilitation (pLTF). Because chronic intermittent hypoxia elicits neuroinflammation and pLTF is undermined by lipopolysaccharide-induced systemic inflammation, we hypothesized that one night of intermittent hyp

Differences in control of parasympathetic vasodilation between submandibular and sublingual glands in the rat.

We examined blood flow in the submandibular gland (SMGBF) and sublingual gland (SLGBF) during electrical stimulation of the central cut end of the lingual nerve (LN) in the urethane-anesthetized rats using a laser speckle imaging flow meter. LN stimulation elicited intensity- and frequency-dependent SMGBF and SLGBF increases, and the magnitude of the SMGBF increase was higher than that of the SLGBF increase. The increase in both glands was significantly inhibited by intravenous administration of the autonomic cholinergic ganglion blocker hexamethonium. The antimuscarinic agent atropine markedl

Acute intermittent hypoxia induced phrenic long-term facilitation despite increased SOD1 expression in a rat model of ALS.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease characterized by motor neuron death. Since most ALS patients succumb to ventilatory failure from loss of respiratory motor neurons, any effective ALS treatment must preserve and/or restore breathing capacity. In rats over-expressing mutated super-oxide dismutase-1 (SOD1(G93A)), the capacity to increase phrenic motor output is decreased at disease end-stage, suggesting imminent ventilatory failure. Acute intermittent hypoxia (AIH) induces phrenic long-term facilitation (pLTF), a form of spinal respiratory m

Long-term follow-up of a child with primary lymph node gastrinoma and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

A 10-year-old child with Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and primary lymph node gastrinoma is reported to emphasize the difficulties encountered in management and the value of long-term follow-up. The gastrinoma was present in a lymph node close to the greater curvature of the stomach. Primary lymph node gastrinomas are relatively rare in children and, to the best of our knowledge, have not previously been reported at this location.

Explanation of near-death experiences: a systematic analysis of case reports and qualitative research.

Background and objectiveSome individuals report a near-death experience (NDE) after a life-threatening crisis, which refers to a range of subjective experiences related to impending death. This experience is a phenomenon with transcendental elements, which leads to deep permanent changes in both the individual and the social lives of the NDEr's. Therefore, this study aims to review the near-death experiences of individuals with different religious and cultural views.MethodologyThis is a systematic analysis study. All the case report, case series and qualitative research studies which presented
