PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to present recent developments in the prenatal diagnosis of the most clinically relevant congenital infections.
RECENT FINDINGS: Immunoglobin G avidity testing can help to differentiate between recent or prior infection. A combination of tests, including serology, avidity and polymerase chain reaction, may be necessary to improve accuracy of diagnosis. The interval between exposure to an infectious agent and prenatal testing can be critical to the interpretation of the test result.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the morbidity and mortality patterns of varicella and risk factors affecting its outcome, and the facilities available at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH), Sri Lanka.
METHODS: A retrospective study on all patients admitted with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) infection to the IDH from August 2000 to July 2001. Data were collected from the hospital records.

New vaccines have been licensed for hepatitis A, varicella, and typhoid. This paper reviews these vaccines and their recommended uses in adults. Special attention is given to a new national policy establishing age 50 years as a time for review of preventive health measures with emphasis on evaluating risk factors that indicate a need for pneumococcal vaccine and the initiation of annual influenza immunization.

We surveyed the directors of all 92 long day care centres in western Sydney to document the occurrence of communicable disease outbreaks during 1992 and to identify risk factors for the occurrence of these outbreaks. A total of 6092 children were enrolled at the centres, of whom 530 (8.7%) were less than 3 years old. Most centres (80.4%) reported at least one outbreak of communicable disease.
